Description
Oct. 31, 1967 I G. R.SCHWARM 3,350,150
' BOOK HOLDER Filed Aug. 16, 1965 INVENTOR George P-Schwarm United States Patent 3,350,150 1300K HOLDER George R. Schwarrn, Rte. 2, Dover, Ohio 44622 Filed Aug. 16, 1965, Ser. No. 479,777 1 Claim. (Cl. 312-117) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A device for holding a book or other reading matter which includes a case having a transparent front wall, a lamp for illuminating the exposed page of reading matter adjacent the transparent front wall, and a bracket for supporting the holder in a position so that a person may read While reclined in a bed.
This invention relates to supporting devices for books and the like, and more particularly to an adjustable frame device for holding books and other papers.
It is therefore the main purpose of this invention to provide a book holder which will hold a book, magazine or pamphlet open at any page.
Another object of this invention is to provide a book holder which will have clamp means and adjustable arm means that will enable it to be held upside down directly over a bedfast patient; particularly one who is encased in a body cast.
Another object of this invention is to provide a book holder which will permit the use of both hands for writing such as in the case of an invalid student wishing to pursue his or her studies, or in the case of any other bed patient allowing them to rest their arms. The aforementioned is especially true when the patient is not to sit or be elevated.
Another object of this invention is to provide a book holder which will be a box like container fronted with a transparent plexiglass viewing panel behind which is received the book or material to be read. The book or material to be read will be inserted through a pivotable door that also serves as a support for the reading material and the book or magazine is held firmly against the viewing front by means of a fiat spring.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a book holder which will have a reflector and lamp to illuminate the reading material and clamp means secured to the holder will allow it to be clamped to a bed side table or other suitable stand.
This invention also is equipped with a telescoping arm which provides lateral and rotating adjustments for the device while the pivotable joints provide height and angular adjustments.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein a satisfactory embodiment of the invention is shown. However, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the details disclosed but includes all such variations and modifications as fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of this invention.
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged end view of FIGURE 1 shown in elevation with one position shown in phantom lines.
According to this invention, a book holder 10 is provided with parallel top and bottom walls 11 and 11' respectively. The bottom wall 11' is pivotable upon the parallel side walls 12 and thus allows for the entrance of a book or other reading material into book holder 10. A rectangular back wall 13 encloses the rear of book holder 10 and a hollow reflector 14 is secured to the top Wall 11 and contains a lamp 15 which will illuminate the pleXiglass 16 which is secured to the front of book holder 10. The ears 17 of the pivotable bottom wall 11 are secured to the side walls 12 and a tab 18 provides finger grip means for opening bottom wall 11 in order to insert the reading material. A11 elongated flat spring 19 within book holder 10 is secured to back wall 13 and thus urges the reading material towards and against plexiglass 16. A screw clamp 20 provides a means of clamping book holder 10 to a bedside table or other stand and a pivotable rod 21 pivotably secured to screw clamp 20 telescopingly receives a rod 22. A joint 23 in conjunction with the pivotable portion of rod 21 secured to clamp 20 allows for various angles of book holder 10 and height adjustments.
What I claim is:
A book holder comprising, a hollow rectangular frame, a pivotable bottom Wall, a transparent front and spring means for holding reading matter to said transparent front, a back panel securing said spring means within said frame, said spring means urging against the rear of said reading matter received within said frame and pressing it against said transparent front, and said bottom wall being forwardly, angularly inclined throughout its length and width to urge said reading matter toward said transparent front.
