UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE RICHARD HAMMOND, OF SNODLAND, COUNTY OF KENT, ENGLAND.
MlTER-FRAME CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No 334,435, dated January 19, 1886.
Application filed June 2, 1885. Serial No. 167,390.
(No model.) Patented in England February 11, 1895, No. 1,893, and in Canada July 8, 1885, No. 22,031.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE RICHARD HAM- MOND, a subject of Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Snodland, in the county of Kent, England, have invented a new and useful Miter-Frame Cramp, (patented in Great Britain, No. 1,893, dated February 11, 1885, and in Canada, No. 22,031, July 8,1885,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object the production of a simple and efficient cramping device, by means of which the four square miters of any frame can be cramped at one time and by one operation.
vIn the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of my improved cramp. Fig. 2is an end view showing portions of my improved cramp.
Like letters indicate like parts in both figures.
My improved cramp consists of a square threaded or other suitably-formed screw, A. One half of the said screw isleft hand and the other half right hand, with a central boss or head, A, between them, in which works alever or handle, B. The said screw carries two nuts, Cone on each endand adouble born, 0, is formed on each side of each of the said nuts 0. A bar, E, of metal or other suitable material, is jointed to each of the said double horns O by a pin, 0, or other means, in such a manner as to admit of the said bar turning freely in the said horns, and of the adjustment of the said bar to any desired angle. A socket, F, is fitted to each of the said bars E, and slides freely thereon, the said sockets being secured at any desired positions on the said bars (according to the size of the frame to be cramped) by means of pins G, fitting into holes 9 in the said sockets, and holes e in the said bars, or
by other convenient means. On the upper side of each of the said sockets F is a small tapped stud or boss, f, upon which ismounted astop-piece, H. The said stop-piece is formed with a rectangular flange, H, which comes in contact with and cramps the corner of the frame. The said flange H is formed with openings orslots H, to admit of the miters being secured by nails or brads while the frame is held in the cramp. The said stop-piece H is retained upon the bossf of the socket F by means of the screw K, which enters the stud or bossf, and upon which screwthestoppiece H has a swivel motion. The four portions of the frame having been inserted between the stop-pieces H, the whole can be cramped together by turning the handle or lever B.
The parts of my improved cramp may be of any suitable material, and I do not limit myself to the precise details herein set forth, as the same may be modified and varied without departing from my invention; but,
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is In a miter-frame cramp, the combination of the double screw A, having a right and left hand screw-thread out upon its ends, the boss and handle B between said screwthreaded ends, nuts upon each of said screws, and horns projecting laterally from said nuts, with bars pivoted to said horns, sliding sockets F, and
stop-pieces H upon said bars, substantially as and-for the purpose set forth.
GEORGE RICHARD HAMMOND. [It s] Vitnesses:
JOSHUA WILFORD, i J EssE PERRIN.
