NEEDLE PACKAGE Filed Dec. 30, 1966 zwgm ATTORNEYS United States Patent 3,337,031 NEEDLE PACKAGE Courtland H. Barr, Sr., Los Angeles, Courtland H. Barr, Jr., La Canada, and John W. Barr, Glendale, Califi, assignors to Courtland Laboratories, Los Angeles, Calif., a corporation of California Filed Dec. 30, 1966, Ser. No. 606,347 9 Claims. (Cl. 206-17) This invention relates to a novel package for a cannula, and to the packaged cannula which is particularly adapted for sale and use with modern cannula holders.
Various cannula packaging devices have been proposed. In general, an acceptable cannula package must provide for the maintenance of the sterility of the cannula during shipment and storage. In addition,
dulled or burred during transit and storage. In addition, it is necessary that the cannula package be of simple inexpensive design and materials of construction since normally the cannula packages are not adapted for reuse.
Accordingly, the present invention is primarily concerned with a novel package for cannulae, and more particularly is concerned with a novel nulae having two sharpened ends and obtuse portion package is particularly adapted for use with modern type cannula holders.
Thus, it is a principal object of the present invention to provide a novel package for a cannula.
More particularly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a novel package for a cannula having two straight end portions connected by an intermediate obtuse portion which is particularly adapted for sale and use with modern cannula holders.
Specifically, to provide a outer cover member and an inner slide member which is slidably received in drawer-like fashion in the cover portion and adapted to hold the cannula, the slide member having a reduced lateral cross-section at a point along its length to facilitate Briefly, the present invention comprises a novel package for a cannula having two straight end portions connected sectional view taken along the line l away of a part thereof when partially withdrawn from the cover. The present invention additionally comprises the novel cannula package above-described wherein the of dowels and the side of the recess.
Turning to the drawings in greater detail, the outer cover member is indicated generally as 10 and the slide member is indicated as 12. The slide member 12 is slidably receivable within the cover member 10. The slide member 12 14 therein in which is received straight end portions 18 and 20 therebetween, but permits the cannula straight portion to be slid there 18 and the intermediate I In this way, the exposed portion of the slide can be readily broken away.
As can be seen, the present invention provides a cannula package designed to permit only the exact Withcover 10. The stop-motion design is 1n such relationship to the juncture of the two straight end portions of the cannula so as to allow sufiicient exposure of the obtuse into the cannula holder pernecessary that this portion remain covered until it is ady for use.
The stop means also plays another role. At the time re cannula is to be exposed for use, the stop means beveen the slide member 12 and the cover is such that re grip is greater than the grip of the dowels 26 and 8 and side of the recess against the cannula. Thus, hen proper force is exerted after straight end portion 8 and intermediate obtuse portion 22 have been secured 1 the cannula holder, the cannula portion becomes emovable from the slide member.
It will be understood that many variations are posible in the present invention. For example, the various lowels and supporting members required to maintain he cannula in the desired position with respect to the :lide 12 may be widely varied. Any form of dowel, raised nembers, and the like may be utilized so long as the caniula is maintained in a position whereby one portion of :he slide member may be broken away to expose a straight portion and an intermediate obtuse portion of the cannula and at the same time provide for shipment of the cannula without damage thereto or impairment of its sterility. The novel package of this invention can be made of any of the common materials of construction including metal and plastic. Typically, the package, or at least the cover 10 thereof, is made of a transparent plastic, as depicted in the drawings.
Thus, all such modifications and variations of the present invention are intended, and the invention is to be limited only by the lawful scope of the appended claims.
