WILLIAM CUTTER SALMON,
STEAM ENGIN PATENT OFFICE.
OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
E OR PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333.675, dated January 5, 1886.
Application filed October 16, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. SALMON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam Engines or Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.-
Figure l of the drawings isa top plan view of my invention, partly in section; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing it in use as a pump; Fig. 4, a longitudinal vertical section; Fig. 5, a horizontal section; Fig. 6, a crosssection taken on the line of the valves; Fig. 7, a detail view in perspective of one of the pistons, and Fig. 8 a section thereof taken on line 3 y of Fig. 7.
The present invention has relation to improvements in steam engines or pumps, and the object thereof is to produce an engine or pump that will be simple in its construction and effective in its operation.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the cylinder,wl1ich is square in cross-section and opened at both ends and on one side. The open side is provided with a bonnet or cover, B,which forms the fourth side to the cylinder, and which, upon being removed, permits the cylinder to be turned up by the tool of a planer for fitting the pistons therein, and also for assembling the parts, each end of the cylinder being attached to heads 0 O. The pistons D are square, and to the rear or inner sides are attached or made integral therewith extensions E, that project beyond the shaft F, their ends forming the pistons D, said extensions forming one-half the area of the pistons D. The area of the inner half of the pistons D and the area of the pistons D equal the outside area of the piston D. Therefore the capacity of the engine or pump is the same upon each stroke of the pistons. I11 the extensions, upon their inner or abutting sides, are formed oval recesses G, upon the opposite sides of which are placed the steel facing-pieces At the bottom of the recesses and through the remainder of the extension-pieces are formed Serial No. 150,114. (No model.)
slots a, through which the shaft is inserted, which also allows the piston to reciprocate over the same. Packing-strips p are inserted in grooves in the pistons D D and in grooves in the extensions between the shaft and the pistons D, said strips being set out by springs s. Upon the shaft are secured two eccentrics, H H,with their throw opposite to each other, these eccentrics fitting in the oval recesses of the extension-pieces and touching the steel facing-pieces against which they press, to be actuated by the pistons or actuate the pistons, as the case may be,when the device is used as an engine or as a pump. v
The valves for the large piston are located in the heads of the cylinder, and those for the small pistons and inner half of the large piston are located on the side of the cylinder.
In Figs. 1 and 2 is shown the ordinary slidevalve applied to the engine to admit and exhaust steam, which is actuated by any wellknown valve-gear. By rotating the shaft the device is transformed into a pump, the same valves answering the purpose of water-valves.
In Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 I have shown the de vice arranged for pumping. The inlet and outlet valves 6 Z) for the pistons D D are located in the heads of the cylinder, and the inlet and outlet valves 0 0 for the piston D are on the side of the cylinder, the pipes for conducting the fluid to and from the pump not being shown.
The packing-strips prevent any leaking of the fluids from one chamber to the other or to the shaft, said shaft being supported at one end in a recess in plate B, and the other end passes through a stuffing-box, I.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the pistons D, each provided with the extension E and pistons D, the cylinder, and means, substantially as described, for actuating said pistons, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the square piston D, provided with square extensions E, terminatingin the pistons D, and the cylinder, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combinatiomwith the pistons D, having the extensions E, provided with recesses tons D, said extensions and pistons being provided with packing-strips,in combination with the cylinder, the shaft, and the eccentrics, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimonythat I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM CUTTER SALMON.
4. The combination, with the pistons D, having the extensions E, provided with recesses and the facing-pieces upon two of their opposite sides and terminating in pistons D,of the cylinder, the shaft, and the eccentrics H H, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. .The piston D, having the extensions E, provided with recesses and terminating in pis- Witnesses:
