Description
W. T. POLLIN Jui 11, 1967 DOORSTOP Filed April 19, 1965 I N VEN'TOR.
W i y 7 2 $1 m 4 Wm FIG.- 4-
United States Patent Oflice 3,330,585 Patented July 11, 1967 r 3,330,585 DOORSTOP William T. Pollin, Pasco Construction Co., 12135 Magnolia Blvd, North Hollywood, Calif. 95350 Filed Apr. 19, 1965, Ser. No. 449,194 2 Claims. (Cl. 292--164) This invention relates to doorstops, and included in the objects of this invention are: I
First, to provide a doorstop which is set in the floor and may be mounted so as to limit opening of the door as a protection against unauthorized entry, or may be mounted so as to retain the door in an open position.
Second, to provide a door stop wherein a stop post is normally held in a retracted position from which it may be released, by a specially arranged foot latch so as to project upward in the path of the door, the stoppost being returned to its normal position merely by stepping on it.
With the above and other objects in view as may appear here and after reference directed to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a diagrammatical sectional view of a door and adjacent frame with the doorstop located adjacent thereto and shown in plan.
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged sectional view thereof taken through 22 of FIGURE 1 showing the doorstop in its retracted position.
FIGURE 3 is a similar sectional view showing the doorstop in its extended position.
FIGURE 4 is an enlarged plan view of the doorstep.
FIGURE 5 is a sectional view thereof taken through 5-5 of FIGURE 2.
FIGURE 6 is a sectional view thereof taken through 66 of FIGURE 2.
The doorstop includes a housing 1 having a flange 2 at one end and a barrel or tubular portion 3 depending from the flange. The barrel forms a socket which is closed at its lower end and receives a stop post 4. The
lower end of the stop post 4 is provided with a socket 5 a which receives a spring 6.
The lower portion of the stop post is provided at one side with a longitudinally extending key slot 7 which receives a key 8 adapted to be screw threaded in the adjacent side wall of the barrel 3.
The stop post is also provided with an annular latch groove 9 which is engageable by a latch ball 10 fitted within a lateral aperture 11 formed in the side wall of the barrel 3 between the aperture 11 and the flange 2 the barrel 3 is provided with a longitudinally extending boss 12 having a longitudinally extending slot v13 therein.
The slot 13 receives a release lever 14 which is pivoted intermediate its ends by a pivot pin 15. The lower end of the release lever is provided with a latch engaging tip 16 adapted to enter the aperture 11.
The flange 2 is provided with a radial slot 17 which forms a continuation of the slot 13 and receives the upper end of the release lever 14. This end of the lever is provided with a lateral extension 18 which fits within the slot 17 and is adapted to protrude a slight distance radially from the flange 2.
A spring 19 is interposed between the upper portion of the release lever 14 and the barrel 3 the ends of the spring fitting in confronting sockets. The spring 19 pivots the release lever 14 in a direction to hold the latch ball 10 in the latch groove 9.
Operation of the doorstop is as follows:
The doorstop may be employed to hold a door in its open position or may be employed to limit opening of the door so that a person may not be admitted; the latter use of the doorstop is illustrated in FIGURE 1. The doorstop is installed by drilling a hole in the floor to admit the barrel 3 and securing the door stop in place by screws 20 inserted through the flange 2.
Normally the stop post 4 is held in its lower position by the latch ball 10 and latch groove 9. When it is desired to use the stop post the lateral extension 18 is engaged by the foot to release latch ball 10 so that the spring 6 may lift the stop post 4 to its raised position shown in FIGURE 3. When it is desired to retract the stop post it is merely necessary to step on it and force it to the position shown in FIGURE 2 whereupon the latch ball 10 engages the latch groove 9 to again secure the stop post in its lower position.
Having fully described my invention, it is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the details herein set forth or to the details illustrated in the drawings, but my invention is of the full scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A doorstop adapted for installation in an opening provided in a floor adjacent a door, said doorstop comprising:
(a) a housing including a flange at its upper end, a cylindrical barrel depending therefrom, and a longitudinally slotted side boss on said barrel, said flange being radially slotted in alignment with the slot in said barrel, said barrel being insertable in said floor opening and said flange adapted to rest on the floor;
(b) a stop post slidable in said barrel between an extended and a retracted position, and having a latch shoulder confronting the lower end of said slot when said stop post is retracted;
(c) a spring for urging said stop post upwardly to protrude from said housing;
(d) a latch lever pivotally mounted in said slot and including a lower end directed toward the bore of said barrel, and an upper radially outwardly directed end fitting the slot in said flange for foot engagement;
(e) latch means at the lower end of said latch lever engageable with said latch shoulder to hold said stop post in its retracted position;
(f) and spring means biasing said latch lever to urge said latch means and latch shoulder into interengagement, thereby to hold said stop post in its retracted position;
(g) the upper radially extending end of said latch lever having a thickness corresponding to said flange and urged by said spring means into a position flush with said flange and protruding radially therefrom, whereby said latch lever is protected from accidental movement, but is operated only by predetermined radial movement in the plane of said flange.
2. A doorstep adapted for installation in an opening provided in a floor adjacent a door, said doorstop comprlsrng:
