SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,886, dated December 22, 1885.
I Application filed July 13, 1885, Serial No. 171,502. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MORGAN GALE, of Corozal, San Salvador, CentralAmerica, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wrenches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 1
My improvements relate to monkey-wrenches; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side view of a wrench with the improvement. Fig.2 is a cross-section on the line as a: of Fig. 1. Fig; 3 is a cross-section on the line 3 3 Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 shows the locking-spindle separately.
The shank or stock A of the wrench has a fixed jaw, 13, at its outer end, and is fitted with a sliding jaw, O. In the body ofjaw O, and parallel with shank A, is a spindle, D, pivoted in bearings at its ends, so as to rotate, and this spindle is threaded so as to engage the rack-teeth a, formed On shank A. At one side. the threads of spindle D are removed, so
that when turned with such mutilated portion inward the jaw O can be moved easily on the shank. bis a knob for turning the spindle. (Z is an elliptic Or semicircular spring fitted in jaw O at one side of the spindle, and provided with a catch, 6, at one end, which, by engaging the notch f on the spindle, prevents its turning.
To adjust the wrench, the end of spring d is pulled out and spindle D then turned to bring its mutilated portion at the inside. The jaw can then be moved and a partial turn Of the spindle will cause its thread to engage rack on and lock the jaw in place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-.
In a wrench constructed substantially as shown and described, and having a toothed shank and a mutilated screw spindle, as D, held in a socket of the movable jaw, the combination, with said spindle provided with a notch, as f, of the spring d and catch a, as set
