ATTORNEY United States Patent O 3,326,479 JAW CRUSHER Theodore M. Connolly and Norman C. Graham, Ashtabula, Ohio, assgnors to Union Carbide Corporation, a corporation of New York Filed Feb. 18, 1965, Ser. No. 433,623 3 Claims. (Cl. 241268) The present invention relates to jaw Crushers of the type used for breaking rock and the like. More particularly, the present invention relates to an improved Aarrangement for adjusting the throw and opening of Blake-type jaw crushers such as are described in The Handbook of Mineral Dressing '1`-aggart, published by Wiley, 1945.
The Blake-type jaw Crusher, which is characterized by having a iixed jaw and an oscillating movable jaw, is widely known and commonly used for breaking rock and the like. However, Iadjustment of the jaw opening of a Blaketype Crusher fand adjustment of the throw, ie., the displacement of the movable jaw during oscillation, has been a very time-consuming operation requiring the disconnecting and reconnecting of bolted and more or less permanently attached parts.
I-t is therefore an object of the present invention to provide means for rapidly adjusting the -jaw opening and throw of Blake-type jaw Crushers.
Other objects will be apparent from the following description and claims taken in conjunction with the drawing in which:
FIGURE 1 shows a `Blake-type jaw Crusher incorporating an adjusting arrangement in vaccordance with the present invention,
FIGURES 2 and 3 show portions of the adjusting arrangement of FIGURE l in more detail and FIGURE 4 shows a further embodiment of the present invention.
Withreference to the drawing, FIGURE 1 shows a Blake-type jaw crusher having incorporated therewith the adjusting means of the present invention.
In the `drawing FIGURE 1 illustrates a jaw Crusher having a main frame 1 on which is arranged a iixed jaw 3 and a movable jaw 5. The movable jaw 5 is pivoted on swing-jaw shaft 6 and is actuated by a reciprocating drive mechanism 7 and is thus caused to oscill-ate by virtue of eccentric 8 and the action of the connecting means which comprise toggles 9 and 10 pivotally connected to pitman 11. In operation pitman 11 is caused to move up and down and the movable jaw 5 thus moves back and forth with respect to the xed jaw; this reciprocating displacement of the movable jaw during operation defines the throw of the Crusher. As shown in the drawing toggles 9 and are pivotally engaged as indicated at 12 and 13 respectively.
As can be easily visualized, it is frequently desirable to adjust both the jaw opening and the throw of the Crusher. In Ithe present invention this is accomplished by providing a stepped member 19, which is suitably iiXed to main frame 1, and a matching stepped member 21 Which is adapted to be moved vertically by means of hydraulically operated adjusting cylinder 22. As shown in the drawing, Ithe stepped member 21 is slidably engaged, for eX- ample in a keying arrangement 23, with block 24, so as to permit vertical movement with respect thereto. Also as shown in .the drawing, the members 21 and 1:9 are arranged to be engaged with each other in at least partial register, and these elements are adapted to be clamped and held in engagement by hydraulically operated holdrelease cylinder 25.
The operation of the present invention will be more fully understood by noting that the conditions shown in the drawing represent minimum jaw opening and maximum throw. To increase the jaw opening, in accordance 3,326,479 Patented June 20, 1967 ICC with the present invention, hold-release cylinder 25 is released and the ram 26, controlled thereby is actuated and moved to the left and, by virtue of being engaged with block 24, 4as shown, causes the stepped member 21 and block 24 to move away from the stepped member 19.
The adjusting cylinder 22 is then actuated .to raise the member a suitable dist-ance so that upon reactuating holdrelease cylinder 25, the members 21 and 19 are re-engaged in register, but with a lower portion of member 21 being in contact with member 19. The result of the aforedescribed operation is to increase the jaw opening by a denite predetermined increment by movement to the right. As shown in the drawing, member 21 is slot-ted at 217 to permit the ram 26, controlled by the hold-release cylinder 25, to pass .there-through and thus not interfere with the raising and lowering of the member.
To decrease the jaw opening, the steps of the foregoing operation are performed in reverse order.
To -adjust the throw of the movable jaw 5, i.e. its displacement during oscillation, hold-release cylinder 25 is released and cylinder 28 is then actuated lto raise or lower block `24 a desired amount. Hold-release cylinder 2'5 is then react-dated to clamp block 24 to the main frame. Since block 24 :and stepped member 21 are slidably engaged lat 23, member 21 is held in place by adjusting cylinder 22 during this adjustment.
The position represented in FIGURE 1 represents maximum throw. Consequently, raising or lowering block 24 from the illustrated position `decreases the throw of movable jaw 5 by changing the effective length of the pivotally mounted hinged connecting means between the movable jaw and Ithe main frame.
FIGURES 2 and V3 of the drawing more particularly illustrate the details of member 21 and the elements c0- operating therewith. As s-hown, ram 26 is engaged with blo-ck 24 `so as to be capable of clamping block 24 and member 21 to the main frame or to permit, when released, the vertical movement of block 24.
1n ya further embodiment of the present invention illustrated in FIGURE 4 stepped members 30 and l32 are arran-ged to be in at least partial register as shown and can be adjustably clamped to the main frame by cylinder B4. By raising or lowering member 32 by means of cylinder 36, the extent of register between members 30 and 32 is altered and the `jaw opening of .the crusher is accordingly adjusted.
The throw of movable jaw 5 is adjusted by Iretracting or .advancing wedge 38 by mean-s of cylinder 40 whereby the eiective length of the pivotally mounted hinged connecting means, comprising toggles 9 and 10, is altered. Wedge 38 is held in its desired position by cylinder 42 and stop 44 which is fixed to the main frame as indicated. The member 32 is slotted as shown at 45 to permit the wedge 38 to pass therethrough.
In all embodiments of the present invention, the illustrated hydraulic cylinders can be replaced by jacks so as t0 provide means for clamping :and release of the members engaged therewith.
Prom the foregoing description it can be seen that the present invention provides a simple and easily operable means for :adjusting both the jaw opening and throw of Blake-type Crushers.
What is claimed is:
1. In a jaw crusher having -a main frame, a Xed jaw mounted on the main frame, a movable jaw pivotally mounted on .the main frame, a first connecting means pivotally connected to said movable jaw and to a lreciprocating driving means, second connecting means pivotally connected to said reciprocating driving means and Iadapted to be connected to the main frame so as to establish a desired minimum opening between the -xed jaw and the movable jaw, the improvement which comprises an assembly comprising rs-t and second stepped members Yarranged to be in -a-t least partial registered engager ment, said assembly being pivotally engaged to said second connecting means; means to change the extent of registiered engagement between the rst and second stepped members to thereby vary the opening between the xed jaw and the movable jaw; and means adjustable to clamp said assembly .to the main frame.
