7 Claims. 01. 346-43) The invention relates to actuated recorders generally and, particularly, to an actuated recording device for a fluid delivery vehicle.
It is among the objects of the invention:
(1) to insure the recording on an appropriate record card of two figures representing quantity of fluid delivered, as indicated by the difference therebetween;
(2) to provide the recording of such figures automati-cally;
(3) to defeat the possibility of a motor vehicle operator failing to record the gallonage delivered;
(,4) to defeat the possibility of diversion of gallonage from a consignee to an unauthorized, unintended receiver;
(5) to avoid the dangers of coupling an actuated recorder with a motor stalling device;
(6) to avoid the dangers of coupling an actuated recorder with a brake-locking device.
There are meters in common use which record gallonage delivered by imprinting upon customers cards or sales records, the amount of such gallonage which is ascertained by subtracting a starting figure from a finishing figure representing amount of gallons delivered. Such meters, having recorded an initial figure, seize or hold on to the card or delivery slip until the second figure is imprinted thereon, the intention being to positively record records of delivery and to defeat the possibility of diversions from the consignee. through forgetfulness, or through artfulness, the operator of the-vehicle may neglect to imprint the second figure, make only partial delivery to the consignee, and deliver a portion of the shipment to a diversionary outlet, where the total delivered to both the consignee and the diversionary outlet are imprinted upon the customer's ticket. It is presently known that such meters may be coupled to motor stalling devices or to brake-setting devices, but such procedures are unsatisfactory, undesirable and dangerous. The present system automatically records the second delivery figure as soon as the vehicle is placed in gear for moving it to a second delivery point.
These objects and advantages, as well as other objects and advantages may be attained by the device shown in the drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a circuit diagram, which also shows the position of the actuating cams preparatory to recording a starting figure prior to delivery of gallonage;
FIGURE 2 is a view showing the position of the actuating cams preparatory to imprinting a figure representing delivered gallonage;
FIGURE 3 is a side elevational view of a recorder and motor for operating the recorder; and
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view showing the actuating cams and cooperative switches of an actuated recorder.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, there is provided a conventional recorder 11 of the type attached to a motor vehicle, which is to deliver and dispense fluids such as fuel oil, gasoline or other material usually delivered by tank trucks. The recorder is of the type which is normally operated by a manual manipulation of a crank, whereby the recorder receives a card, the crank is turned to imprint on the card a starting figure, and the card is seized and held so that it cannot be withdrawn until a second recording operation takes place. dispensing operation has occurred by the truck delivering fluid, and the recorder counting the delivered fluid, the crank is then manipulated to imprint a second figure which represents, by subtraction from the first figure, the delivered gallonage. The card is then released and no longer seized by the recorder. The card (not shown) represents a customers delivery ticket or charge account card for gallonage delivered. It is inserted in a slot 12 in the recorder 11. The recorder 11 has a shaft 13 which when rotated, actuates a printing mechanism which will imprint a number on the customers card or delivery ticket. Instead of this imprint being made by the recorder when a crank is manipulated, the imprint is applied by virtue of an operator operating a switch 14, which closes a circuit to the motor 15. The motor 15 operates to drive the shaft 13 of the recorder 11, so that an initial imprint is made on the customers card or delivery receipt, at which time, the motor circuit is opened by the cam 16 operating the switch 22. The first imprint having been made on the customers card or delivery receipt, the recorder 11 has now seized the customers card or delivery receipt, so that it cannot be withdrawn without tearing. The operator then commences delivery of the fluid to be dispensed and when this delivery is complete, the operator operates a second switch 17, which once more closes the motor circuit. The motor then drives the recorder. Since the recorder has responded to record the gallonage delivered by registering the increment beyond the original starting gallonage figure, the recorder then imprints a second figure representing the sum of the starting gallonage with the gallonage delivered. The shaft 18 which drives the recorder 11 by a belt 19 connected to the shaft 13 of the recorder 11, has again operated the recorder 11 to imprint the figure representing the increment of starting gallonage with gallonage delivered. The motor 15 is not connected directly to the recorder 11, but drives it through a speed reducer (not shown). The shaft 8 of the speed reducer has mounted upon it a pair of cams 15 and 20. As soon as the switch 14 closes the motor circuit with the cams in the position shown in FIGURE 1, the shaft 18 revolves rotating the cams 16, 20. The cam 16 operates the switch 22, to setup a second motor circuit. This second motor circuit is completed when the operator actuates the switch 17. The motor 15* then drives the recorder 11 to imprint the gallonage amount recorded as delivered beyond the original imprint. After the imprint is made, the cam 16 returns to its original position and then opens the motor circuit, setting up a second motor circuit for the switch 17. The cams 16, 20, as positioned in FIGURE 1, represent the starting position before the first imprint. The earns 16, 20, as positioned in FIGURE 2, represent the delivery on position, after the first imprint has been made. The cams 16, 20, as shown in FIGURE 2, therefore, show the cams prior to operating the motor to imprint the second gallonage figure, which represents delivery complete; after that, the cams revert to their original start position, as shown in FIGURE 1, when the switch 17 is operated.
In the event that the operator through neglect or dishonesty fails to operate the imprint switch 17 to close the motor circuit to print the second figure on the customers card or meter receipt, the meter will not release the card. There is a third switch 35, which is operably connected to the transmission of the vehicle, so that when the transmission is engaged, the motor circuit is completed by the switch 35 being closed. Thus, the motor 15 will drive the recorder 11 to imprint the second figure. In this way, an accurate record of delivery is made before the vehicle moves to a new location. Furthermore, the possibility of delivery (at a second 10- cation) where part of the fluid cargo intended for one consignee is diverted to a second consignee, is defeated because the vehicle cannot be moved to the diversionary outlet without recording a second figure on the consignees charge card or delivery receipt before the vehicle has moved to the diversionary outlet. With cam 16 and cam 20 in the position shown in FIGURE 2, a push-button represented by switch 14 is pressed, whereupon the circuit is closed from that switch to the relay 23, which closes the circuit to the commenced delivery signal light 24. At the same time, current is passing through the switch 22 to the relay 25. Once it passes on to the relay 23, the relay 23 is then powered independently of switch 14 and will stay energized until cam 20 reaches the position shown in FIGURE 1, whereupon the relay 23 is de-energized.
While this is occurring, the circuit from the relay 25 is closed to the relay 26. This relay powers relay 27 and energizes the armature 28 of the motor 15. It also is connected to the field 29 of the motor 15. The normally closed switch 30 completes the circuit to ground. Power flows through the armature in the same direction as when switch 14 is actuated, but the field is in the opposite direction so that the motor is operated counter clockwise.
When delivery is complete, push-button switch 17 is actuated closing the circuit through the normally closed contacts in relay 25 to switch 22. Light 31 representing delivery complete is now lighted and the circuit is completed to relay 23, and through it, through the normally closed contacts to relay 25. This relay 25 is now powered independently of switch 17, and will stay energized until the motor 15 operates the cam 16 to break the circuit when the cam 16 reaches the position shown in FIGURE 2. Relay 26 and the circuit to relay 27 is completed and energized. Power is delivered to this relay and to the field windings 29 of the motor 15. Since this D.C. shunt motor is constantly grounded, it is now energized through the relay 27, current is flowing through the field shunt windings and the armature 28 is now constantly grounded. Thus, the motor 15 will now run clockwise, reversing the movement of the cam 16, 20 until the cam 16 reaches the position shown in FIG- URE 2. There the circuit to relay 25 will be opened. Signal light 31 remains illuminated until the operator shuts off the power for the lights. The second operation of the motor has caused the second imprinting by the actuated recorder 11. In the event that the operator has failed to actuate the switch 17 for the second imprint of the actuated recorder, a second switch 35 operably connected to the transmission of the vehicle is provided, so that when the gearsare engaged, this switch is actuated. The switch 35 is connected in parallel with the switch 17, so that the final imprint representing gallonage delivered is automatically impressed upon the customers delivery card, and the actuated recorder releases the card, so that it may be withdrawn.
The foregoing description is merely intended to illustrate an embodiment of the invention. The component parts have been shown and described. They each may have substitutes which may perform a substantially similar function; such substitutes may be known as proper substitutes for the said components and may have actually been known or invented before the present invention; these substitutes are contemplated as being within the scope of the appended claims, although they are not specifically catalogued herein.
What is claimed:
1. An actuated recorder for a fluid dispensing motor vehicle comprising:
(a) a recorder mounted on a motor vehicle, the recorder having an imprint mechanism responsive to fluid material dispensed and, also, continuously seizing a record card after a first imprint thereon, and releasing the record card only after a second imprint thereon;
(b) a reversible motor driving the recorder to make imprints on the record card' corresponding to amount of fluid dispensed;
(c) means to start the motor to make a first imprint;
(d) means to stop the motor after a first imprint;
(e) first means to start. the motor in reverse to make a second imprint;
(f) means to stop the motor after the second imprint;
(g) second means to start the motor in reverse to make a second imprint; the second means to start the motor operably connected to the transmission of the motor vehicle whereby driving the vehicle will cause the second imprint.
2. The device according to claim 1, in which the means to stop the motor after a first imprint is a cam operated by the motor to engage a switch that controls power to the motor.
3. The device according to claim 1, in which the means to stop the motor after the second imprint is a cam operated by the motor to engage a switch that controls power to the motor.
4. The device according to claim 1, in which the second means to start the motor in reverse includes a doublepole-double-throw relay.
S. The device according to claim 1, in which means to start the motor to make an imprint includes a doublepole-double-throw relay to maintain the motor power current until after the first imprint has been made and to set up a second circuit including the first and second means to start the motor in reverse.
6. An actuated recorder for a fluid dispensing motor vehicle comprising:
(a) a recorder mounted on a motor vehicle, the recorder having an imprint mechanism responsive to fluid material dispensed, and also continuously seizing a record card after a first imprint thereon, and releasing the record card only after a second imprint thereon;
(b) a reversible motor driving the recorder to make imprints on the record card corresponding to amounts of fluid dispensed;
(c) a first normally open switch in the motor circuit operably connected to a first relay to close the motor circuit;
(d) a normally closed switch in the motor circuit;
(e) a first cam operated by the motor to open the normally closed switch in the motor circuit after a first imprint by the recorder on the customers card;
(f) a second normally open switch in the motor circuit operably connected to a second relay to reverse the power to the motor;
(g) the second normally open switch in the motor circuit operably connected to a third relay to close the motor circuit with the reversed power supply;
(h) a normally closed switch in the reversed motor power circuit;
(i) a second cam operated by the motor to open the normally closed switch in the power-reversed motor circuit after a second imprint by the recorder on the card;
(j) a third normally open switch operably connected to the second relay to reverse the power to the motor;
(k) the third normally open switch connected to the transmission of the motor vehicle whereby driving the vehicle will also cause the second imprint.
7. An actuated recorder for measuring fluid dispensed comprising:
(a) a recorder having an imprint mechanism responsive to fluid material dispensed, for continuously seizing a record card after a first imprint thereon, and for releasing the record card only after a second imprint thereon;
(b) a reversible motor driving the recorder to make imprints on the record card corresponding to amount of fluid dispensed; 4

Claims (1)
1. AN ACTUATED RECORDER FOR A FLUID DISPENSING MOTOR VEHICLE COMPRISING: (A) A RECORDER MOUNTED ON A MOTOR VEHICLE, THE RECORDER HAVING AN IMPRINT MECHANISM RESPONSIVE TO FLUID MATERIAL DISPENSED AND, ALSO, CONTINUOUSLY SEIZING A RECORD CARD AFTER A FIRST IMPRINT THEREON, AND RELEASING THE RECORD CARD ONLY AFTER A SECOND IMPRINT THEREON; (B) A REVERSIBLE MOTOR DRIVING THE RECORDER TO MAKE IMPRINTS ON THE RECORD CARD CORRESPONDING TO AMOUNT OF FLUID DISPENSED; (C) MEANS TO START THE MOTOR TO MAKE A FIRST IMPRINT; (D) MEANS TO STOP THE MOTOR AFTER A FIRST IMPRINT;
