(Cl. 7287) This invention relates to ring rollers `and particularly to a`ring roller structure in which the rolling mandrel and work roll may be quickly removed and in which the work piece may 'be quickly charged.
Ring rollers in which a cylindrical Work piece is placed over a vertical mandrel and rolled by forcing a work roll to act on the cylinder between the work roll and mandrel to elongate it are known. TWO of the great diiculties in operating such ring rollers in the past have been the difficulty of charging and removing the work piece and the diiculty in removing the work roll from within the apparatus. In the past, the removal of the work roll, in particular, has required the complete disassembly ofthe ov-erhead supporting members. This requires several hours of work and lost time on the ring rolling machine. That this is a serious economic waste goes without saying and much effort has been spent in the search for a satisfactory solution without success.
I have invented airing roller structure in whi-ch the work roll may be released in a matter of seconds rather than hours. In the device of my invention, the work piece may be charged easily `and rapidly and the ring being rolled may be carefully and accurately edge rolled.
In a preferred embodiment of my invention, I provide a main generally horizontal frame, ways extending lengthwise of said frame, a vertically mounted work roll journalled at one end in said frame for rotation on a vertical axis, a horizontally movable mandrel carriage on the ways, said carriage extending around said work roll and carrying a mandrel journalled at one end for rotation on a vertical axis in a bearing slidable within the horizontal frame, means for moving said carriage on said Ways, an arm pivoted `at one end on said carriage and extending lengthwise of the frame above the work roll, a mandrel journal on said arm remote from pivot rotatably receiving the other end of said mandrel, said mandrel journal being vertically movable on said arm into and out of engagement with said mandrel, means on the arm for moving said mandrel in the vertical direction, means on the carriage engaging the arm for pivoting said arm from a generally horizontal to a generally vertical position, backing journal means on the carriage engaging the work roll at its other end adjacent the pivoted arm and holding it against movement on the side opposite the mandrel, said backing journal means lbeing slidable on said frame from a -roll engaging position, to :a position -outside the circumference of the work roll, upper and lower edging roll means on the frame moveable in a vertical direction toward and away from one another, means on the frame for changing the position of the axis of said edging rolls with respect to the mandrel, drive means on the frame positively driving at least one of said edging rolls at a peripheral speed equal to that of the mandrel. Preferably'a roll supporting and edging carriage is mounted on ways on the frame and is movable toward and away from the mandrel car-riage to supp-ort the ring as it enlarges, said carriage carrying spaced edging rolls vertically movable toward and away from one another and at least one being driven at a Iperipheral speed equal to the peripheral 'speed of the work roll and mandrel.
In the foregoing general description, I have set out certain objects, advantages and purposes of my invention. Other objects, advantages and purposes will become apparent from a consideration of the following description and the accompanying drawings in which,

Referring to the drawings, I have illustrated a ring roller according to my invention having a generally horizontal frame 10 carrying a work roll 11 journalled at one end 11a for rotation on a vertical `axis and driven by a pinion 12 within the frame. The pinion 12 is driven from pinion 13 on shaft 14 which is in turn driven by bevel gears 15 and 16 and drive shaft 17 connected to a motor not shown. Apair of ways 18 and'19 on the frame 10 support a mandrel carriage 20 which moves longitudinally on the frame. The carriage 20 is actuated by piston 21 and hydraulic cylinder 22 xed to a vertical header 23 on frame 10. A mandrel 24 is journalled in bearing 25 in a portion of carriage 20 within frame 10. A mandrel journal -arm 26 is pivoted at one end on pin 27 on carriage 20. The opposite end of arm 26 carries a journal box 28 which receives the other end of mandrel 24. The journal box 28 is slidably mounted on dovetail ways 29 on the end of arm 26 and is moved vertically on these ways by .screw 30 driven by mot-or 31 through mitre gears 32, shaft 33 and mitre gears 34. The arm 26 is moved from a generally horizontal position as seen in solid line in FIGURE l to a generally vertical position as seen in chain line in FIGURE 1 by hydraulic cylinder 35 on carriage 20 and piston 36. The end 11b of the work roll.11 opposite the journal 11a is engaged by backing rolls 37 mounted in a yoke 38 which is slidable on ways 39 on the header frame 23. The yoke '3S is moved on ways 39 by a bell crank 40, link 41 and hydraulic cylinder 42 and piston 43.
Upper 44 and lower 45 edging rolls are journalled in edging roll pedestals 46 on either side of the work roll 11 and mandrel 24. The pedestals 46 are rotatably carried on carriages 47 slidable in ways 43 on the sides of frame 10. The carriages 47 are moved on ways 48 by means of hydraulic cylinders 49 and pistons 50. The lower edging rolls 45 are driven by means of pinion 51 on shaft 14 through pinions 52 on shafts 53 which in turn drive the universal splined shaft 54 through mitre gears 55. The shaft 54 drives mitre gears 56, one on the shaft of the lower edging roll and the other splined on vertical shaft 57 in the edging roll pedestals 46. `The edging rolls are movable vertically with respect to one another by hydraulic cylinders 58 on the upper and 59 on the lower roll journals. The angular position of the edging rolls 44 and 45 with respect to the work roll and mandrel is controlled by a guide roll 60 mounted on arm 61 at the base of pedestals 46. The guide rolls 60 run in curved guide slots 62 on the frame 10. Each of the pedestals 46 also carries a centering roll 63 on arms 64. These centering rolls center the ring being rolled between the mandrel and work roll. ,Y
A supporting carriage 70 is mounted on Wheels 71 which run on rails 72 extending lengthwise of frame 10 .and is held down and guided by ways 73 paralleling rails 72 and below said rails. The carriage is driven by parallel screws 74 in mot-or 7S on the bottom of carriage 70. The screws 74 are driven by motor 75 and gearing 76. The carriage 70 carries centering rolls 77 on arms 78 pivoted to the carriage on shafts 79. The position of the rolls 77 is governed by guide bars 8i) on frame 10 acting through lever arms 81 on shafts 79. Vertically moxable edging rolls 82 and S3 are mounted on carriage 70 to engage the edges of the work piece. The upper roll 82 is moved by hydraulic cylinder and piston 84. The lower roll is moved by hydraulic cylinder and piston 85. The lower roll is driven by mitre gears 86, splined vertical shaft 37 and mitre gears S23/Ion splined shaft S9 in frame 10. The shaft 89 is driven by a bevel gear 90 on shaft 91 which shaft is in turn driven by pinion 92 from pinion 12 which drives the work roll 11.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that the work roll 11 and the edging rolls 44 and 45 and 82 and 83 are all powered from the same source so that their peripheral speeds can be identical. In this way, all the rolls working on the Work piece travel at identical peripheral speeds.
The operation of the ring rolling device of this invention is as follows: A"work roll is inserted by raising the mandrel journal box 23 on ways 29 by motor 3l. The arm 26 is raised to the vertical position by cylinder 35 and the yokel 33 is moved to the left viewing FIGURE l by cylinder 42. The roll is inserted, the yoke 38 is moved to bring rolls 37 against the journal neck 11b of Work roll 1l, the arm 26 is lowered into the generally horizontal position with a work piece on mandrel 24. The mandrel journal box 28 is lowered over the mandrel end and the edging rolls 44 and 45 brought into contact with the edge of the work piece. Simultaneously, the supporting carriage 7@ is moved to the left viewing FIGURE l to bring edging rolls S2 and 8,3 into position on the work piece and centering rolls 77 against the sides of the work piece. The main drive is started `and the work and edging rolls driven to act on the work piece. As the piece enlarges, the supporting carriage '70 is moved tjo the right viewing FIGURE l while the edging ` rolls 44, 45 and 82 and 83 are forced toward each other to work the edges of the work piece as the main work roll 11 elongates it.
In the foregoing specification, I have set out ya preferred embodiment of my invention. It will be understood, however, that this invention may be otherwise embodied within the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. A ring roller comprising a main generally horizontal frame having ways extending lengthwise thereof, a work roll journalled in said frame for rotation on a vertical axis, a horizontally movable mandrel carriage on the ways, said carriage having mandrel journalling members extending around the work roll to carry a mandrel on an axis yparallel to the work roll and adjustable with respect thereto, a mandrel in said carriage, at least one of said mandrel journalling members including an arm pivoted at one end to said carriage and` extending above the work roll and transverse to its axis, means for moving said arm from a generally horizontal toa generally vertical position to expose the work roll, means on said arm for releasing the mandrel from said arm prior to moving said arm on its ypivot and movable backing roll means on the main frame movable from a position engaging the upper work roll journal to hold it against movement transverse to its axis to a position exposing the entire work roll whereby when said arm and backing roll means are moved to expose the work roll said roll may be freely lifted vertically from the frame.
2. A ring roller comprising :a main generally horizontal frame having ways extending lengthwise thereof, a work roll journalled in said frame for rotation on a vertical axis, a horizontally movable mandrel carriage on the ways, said carriage having mandrel journalling members extending around the work roll to carry a mandrel on an axis parallel to the work roll and adjustable with respect thereto, a mandrel in said carriage, at least one of said mandrel journalling members including an arm pivoted at one end t-o said carriage and extending Iabove the work roll and transverse to its axis, mandrel journal means on said arm at the other end thereof, means for moving said arm fro-m .a generally horizontally to a generally vertical position to expose the work roll, means on said arm for raising the mandrel journal means vertically on the arm to release the mandrel from said arm prior to moving said arm on its pivot land movable backing roll means on the main frame movable from ar position engaging the upper work roll journal to hold it against movement transverse to its axis to a position exposing the entire work roll whereby when said arm and backing roll means are moved to expose the work roll said roll may be freely lifted vertically from the frame.
3. A ring roller `as claimed in claim 2 having hydraulic cylinder means on the mandrel carriage raising and lowering the mandrel journal arm and hydraulic cylinder means on the frame moving the backing roll means horizontal into and out of engagement with the upper work' rol journal.
4. A ring roller comprising a main generally horizontal frame having ways extending lengthwise thereof, a work roll journalled in said frame for rotation on a vertical axis, 4a horizontally movable mandrelcarriage on the ways, said carriage having mandrel journalling members extending around the work roll to carry a mandrel on an axis parallel to the work roll and adjustable with respect thereto, a mandrel in said carriage, at least one of said mandrel journalling members including an arm pivoted at one end to said carriage and extending above the work roll and transverse to its axis, means for moving said arm from a generally horizontal to a generally vertical position to expose the work roll, means on said arm for releasing the mandrel from said arm prior to moving said arm on its pivot, movable backing roll means on the main frame movable from a position engaging the upper work roll journal to hold it against movement transverse to its axis to a position exposing the entire work roll whereby when said arm and backing roll means are moved to expose the work roll said roll may be freely lifted vertically from the frame, upper and lower edging rolls on said frame for vertical movement relatively to said frame and each other, means on the frame changing the axis of said edging rolls with respect to the axis of the mandrel and drive means simultaneously driving the edging rolls and work roll at substantially the same peripheral speed.

A ring roller as claimed in claim 4 wherein the edging rolls are journalled in a vertically extending arm, guide means on the frame "carrying said arm in a path lengthwise ofsaid frame, a guide slot in the frame defining an arc spaced from and around the mandrel and guide means on the edging roll arm running in said slot for rotating said arm when the arm is moved in its 'guidevvay wherebyto shift the axis of the edging rolls.

A ring roller comprising a main generally horizontal frame having ways extending lengthwise thereof, a work roll journalled in said frame for rotation on a vertical axis, a horizontally movable mandrel carriage on the ways, said carriage having mandrel journalling members extending around the work roll to carry a mandrel on an axis parallel to the `work roll and adjustable with respect thereto, a mandrel in said carriage, at least one of said mandrel journalling members including an arm pivoted at one end to said carriage and extending above the work roll and transverse to its axis, means for moving said arm from a generally horizontal to a generally vertical position to expose the work roll, means on said arm for releasing the mandrel from said arm prior to moving said arm on its pivot, movable backing roll means on the main frame movable from a position engaging the upper work roll journal to hold it against movement transverse to its axis to a position exposing the entire work roll whereby when said arm and backing n roll means are moved to expose the work roll said roll may 'be freely lifted vertically from the frame, a roll supporting and edging carriage movable on ways on the frame longitudinally of said frame toward and away from the mandrel carriage, means on the frame for moving said roll supporting carriage independently of the mandrel carriage, edging rolls on said carriage vertically movable toward and away from one another and the main frame, at least one of said edging rolls being driven at a peripheral speed substantially equal to the peripheral speed of the work roll and drive means simultaneously driving the work roll and edging roll.

A ring roller comprising a main generally horizontal frame having ways extending lengthwise thereof, a work roll journalled in said frame for rotation on a vertical axis, Ia horizontally movable mandrel carriage on the ways, said carriage having mandrel journalling members extending around the work roll to carry a mandrel on an axis parallel to the work roll and adjustable with respect thereto, a mandrel in said carriage, at least one of said mandrel journalling members including an arm pivoted at one end to said carriage and extending above the work roll and transverse to its axis, means for moving said arm from a generally horizontal to a generally vertical position to expose the work roll, means on said arm for releasing the mandrel from said arm prior to moving said arm on its pivot, movable backing roll means on the main frame movable from a position engaging the upper work roll journal to hold it against movement transverse to its axis to a position exposing the entire work roll whereby when said arm and backing roll means are moved to expose the worl; roll said roll may be freely lifted vertically from the frame, upper and lower edging rolls on said frame adjacent the mandrel for vertical movement with respect to the frame and each other, means on the frame changing the axis of said rolls with respect to the axis of the mandrel, a roll supporting and edging carriage movable on ways on the frame longi-A tudinally thereof toward and away from the mandrel carriage, means on the frame for moving said carriage independently of the mandrelcarriage, edging rolls on the carriage movable vertically with respect to the frame and each other, and drive means simultaneously driving the work roll, at least one of the edging rolls adjacent the mandrel and at least one of the edging rolls on the support carriage at substantially identical peripheral speeds.

Claims (1)

1. A RING ROLLER COMPRISING A MAIN GENERALLY HORIZONTAL FRAME HAVING WAYS EXTENDING LENGTHWISE THEREOF, A WORK ROLL JOURNALLED IN SAID FRAME FOR ROTATION ON A VERTICAL AXIS, A HORIZONTALLY MOVABLE MANDREL CARRIAGE ON THE WAYS, SAID CARRIAGE HAVING MANDREL JOURNALLING MEMBERS EXTENDING AROUND THE WORK ROLL TO CARRY A MANDREL ON AN AXIS PARALLEL TO THE WORK ROLL AND ADJUSTABLE WITH RESPECT THERETO, A MANDREL IN SAID CARRIAGE, AT LEAST ONE OF SAID MANDREL JOURNALLING MEMBERS INCLUDING AN ARM PIVOTED AT ONE END TO SAID CARRIAGE AND EXTENDING ABOVE THE WORK ROLL AND TRANSVERSE TO ITS AXIS, MEANS FOR MOVING SAID ARM FROM A GENERALLY HORIZONTAL TO A GENERALLY VERTICAL POSITION TO EXPOSE THE WORK ROLL, MEANS ON SAID ARM FOR RELEASING THE MANDREL FROM SAID ARM PRIOR TO MOVING SAID ARM ON ITS PIVOT AND MOVABLE BACKING ROLL MEANS ON THE MAIN FRAME MOVABLE FROM A POSITION ENGAGING THE UPPER WORK ROLL JOURNAL TO HOLD IT AGAINST MOVEMENT TRANSVERSE TO ITS AXIS TO A POSITION EXPOSING THE ENTIRE WORK ROLL WHEREBY WHEN SAID ARM AND BACKING ROLL MEANS ARE MOVED TO EXPOSE THE WORK ROLL SAID ROLL MAY BE FREELY LIFTED VERTICALLY FROM THE FRAME.
