ROTARY ENGIVNE AND PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 330,702, dated November 17, 1885.
Application filed June l1, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Pump,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to rotary engines; and it consists in the improvements hereinafter described and set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l represents a longitudinal vertical section through the center of the shaft. Fig. 2 represents a transverse vertical section through the center of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a perspective of the inside mechanism removed from the outer easement, and with part of the drum cut away to show working parts. Fig. 4 represents a perspective of the outside of the machine when completed.
In the accompanying drawings like letters refer to like parts.
a a represent the outer easement:l composed of the base on which it stands, the shell of the machine proper and that of the steam-chest a all in one casting.
l? and P represent induction and eduction ports, their function reversing when the motion of the machine is reversed; and X and X', auxiliary eduction-ports, whereby steam is exhausted at a favorable point.
S represents a cylindrical cavity which contains the motive mechanism, and S a cylindrical steam-chest which contains the reversing mechanism.
B B represent the head-plates, which are bolted onto the ends of the easement a a; B and B, the head-plates bolted onto the ends of the steam-chest a; and c c, plates bolted onto plates B B to cover openings bored to receive the trunnions F and F, as hereinafter described.
D represents a shaft free to rotate in the center of the cylindrical cavity S in the casement on bearings bored through bosses in the plates c c when actuated by pressure on' the vanes or wings E EU E represents a vane rigidly attached to the Shaft D, and E a similar vane free to oscillate Serial No. 168,406. (No moth-1.)
Vbetween limits on the shaft, both of which ex- 5o tend to a contact with the wall of the cylindrical cavity S, their sides being in contact with the inner surfaces of the head-plates B B. Contact at the ends and sides is assured and vmaintained by means of suitable spring pack- 5 5 ing-strips, (not shown,) for which no novelty is claimed.
E represents a hollow cylindrical drum, which is free to turn on central hollow trunnions, F, at the ends, which fit into openings 6C bored in the head-plates B B, and so located as to constantly maintain a contact between an element in the cylindrical surface of the drum F, and the packing-strip J set into the outer easement midway between the ports P 65 and P.
G G represent cylindrical spindles which are free to oscillate in openings in the rim of the drum F, so bored that when a spindle is in place an element farthest from the center 7c of the shaft shall be intersected by the surface of the drum. These spindles are composed of two semi-cylinders recessed on the at sides, so that when placed together they may embrace the vanes E and E', making asteam-tight joint 75 between the surfaces brought into contact. Slipping of the semicylinders with reference to each other is prevented by suitable dowelpins at the ends, and contact between the spindles and their seat in the rim of the drum 8@ is assured and maintained by suitable packing-strips, (not shown.) for which no novelty is claimed. Sufficient metal is cut away from the rim of the drum F, adjacent to the spindles G G to permit the vanes E and E to os- 8 5 cillate between the limits required in the operation of the machine.
h represents the reversing-valve operated by means of the spindle D and the lever L, whereby, in conjunction with the ring I, steam 9o may be admitted to either side of the vanes E and E', and the other side opened to the exhaust-passage or shut off altogether, at will.
I represents a cylindrical ring turned to Iit vthe inner surface of the steam-chest a', with 95 one side cut out, leaving a space equal to the extreme width of the valve h. plus the width of the port P, and having an elongated slot cut out of the oppositesideto ad mitsteam from the opening Y to the space S in the steam-chest when the valve is in any position.
Vhen used as a pump, the mechanism remains the same, except that the steam-chest, with its attachments and the passages X and X, are discarded, and the supply and discharge pipes are connected to the passages P and P', respectively.
What I claim is- 1. rIhe combination, in a rotary engine, of the easement, providing a cylindrical steamchamber and asmaller cylindrical valve-chamber, a shaft passing centrally through said steam-chamber and carrying vanes, a cylinder located eccentrically in said chamber, through which said vanes extend, induction and eduction ports communicating with said .steam and valve chamber, supplemental ports X X', communicating with steam and valve chamber, a valve located in said valve-chamber for reversing the supply and exhaust of said induction and eduction ports, and alternately throwing either of said supplemental ports into communication with the exhaust, and hand appliances for operating said valve, substantially as set forth.
2,. The combination, in a rotary engine, of the easement, providing circular steam-chamber, and a smaller valve-chamber communiforth.
3. The combination of the larger and smaller circular chambers S S, communicating by ports P P, shaft D, carrying vanes, eccentric cylinder pierced by said vanes, a cylinder or ring, I, located in said smaller chamber and cut away, as described, and an oscillating valve extending into said cut-away portion to shift the cylinder or ring, substantially as set forth.
in testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J AMES HENDERSON.
