EXPANDING ARBORS Original Filed June 28, 1965 INVENTOR. RUSSEL W ANTHONY ATTORNEY United States Patent 4 Claims. (CI. 82-44) The present application relates to expanding arbors and is a division of my copending application Serial No. 467,239 filed June 28, 1965.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an expanding arbor having means thereon to effect location of an annular workpiece such as a gear having a central opening therethrough, both axially and radially in predetermined sequence and in a predetermined manner.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide an expanding arbor effective to provide spring urged axial location in combination with positive face location.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide an expanding arbor comprising means for effecting positive radial location following preliminary axial location.
Other objects and features of the invention will become apparent as the description proceeds, especially when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment of the invention, wherein:

In the use of expanding arbors the workpiece is required to be accurately located in position for subsequent machining or gauging operations. However, different workpieces are designed to take location from different surfaces. Thus for example, in some cases the central hole through a workpiece may be located with such exact accuracy that the workpiece is properly located solely by expansion of the arbor into engagement with the interior surfaces of the hole. In other cases the end surfaces of the workpiece may be qualifying or locating surfaces, in which case it may be desirable to insure that positive engagement of locating surfaces against the end surfaces of the workpiece may be permitted to square the workpieces up in accordance with its end surfaces.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that if for example, the central hole in the workpiece extends at an oblique angle with respect to the end surfaces, attempts to effect positive location both in the hole and against the end surfaces produce a conflict. The actual ultimate position arrived by the workpiece then depends upon the forces involved and the mechanical advantages. For example, if positive face location is taken adjacent the periphery of a relatively large diameter workpiece, the forces involved will probably square the workpiece up even though an expanding arbor has made positive engagement with the interior of the hole. Thus, the diameter of the workpiece and the length of the hole, and particularly the areas of the sides and holes which are engaged by the support means, together with the forces involved, determine the final position of the workpiece.
Referring now to the figure there is shown a specific different embodiment of the present invention. In this case the gear illustrated at 130 is gripped laterally between a first body 132 bolted or otherwise secured to the face plate of a stock, and a sleeve 134 slidable on a second body 136 adapted to be bolted or otherwise secured to the faceplate of the opposed stock.
The sleeve 134 has a reduced extension 138 slidably received in a piloting recess 139 in the body 132. A
plurality of longitudinally extending camming grooves are provided in a reduced extension 141 of the body 136 and are adapted to receive keys 142 extending through slots in the extension 138 of the body 136. The inner surfaces of the keys 142 are inclined as indicated at 144 so that sliding movement of the body 136 to the left as seen in FIGURE 7 cams the keys 142 outwardly, thus locating and clamping the gear 130 on the expanding arbor assembly.
The sleeve 134 is slidable on the enlarged portion 146 of the body 136 and is urged to the left thereon by a compression spring 148. The sleeve is retained on the body 138 by a pin extending diametrically through the enlarged portion 146 and received in elongated slots 152 in the sleeve.
With this construction it will of course be apparent that when the stocks are separated the spring 148 will cause the sleeve 134 to assume a leftward position determined by engagement between the pin 150 and the right hand end of the slots 152. When a gear is placed on the reduced portion 138 of the body 136 and this reduced portion is moved into the piloting recess 139, sleeve portion 134 presses the gear 130 between the end surfaces of the body 132 and the sleeve so as to locate it axially in desired position. Thereafter, continued movement of the body 136 to the left forces the reduced portion 141 inwardly relative to the reduced portion 138 of the sleeve, thus camming keys 142 radially outwardly.
The drawing and the foregoing specification constitute a description of the improved expanding arbors in such full, clear, concise and exact terms as to enable any person skilled in the art to practice the invention, the scope of which is indicated by the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. An expanding arbor comprising a first body having a piloting recess opening into one end thereof, a second body, a sleeve slidable on said second body and having an end portion slidable in said piloting recess, resilient means interposed between said second body and sleeve urging said sleeve toward said first body, stop means be tween said sleeve and second body, said second body having a portion slidably received in the end portion of said sleeve and provided therein with a plurality of tapered grooves, slots in the end portion of said sleeve in registration with said tapered grooves, keys extending through said slots and having inclined bottom surfaces received in said grooves, and means for moving said first and second bodies in approach and separation such that upon approach said sleeve presses a work gear supported on the end portion thereof against a locating surface on said first body and thereafter continued approach results in sliding movement of the end portion of said second body in the end portion of said sleeve to cam said keys radially outwardly into clamping engagement with a workpiece supported on the end portion of said sleeve.
2. An expanding arbor assembly comprising a first body having a work-engaging and locating shoulder at one end and an elongated piloting recess opening into one end thereof, a second body, means for relatively moving said bodies toward and away from each other, said second body having an elongated cam portion rigidly connected thereto and movable into said recess, a sleeve having a reduced portion slidable on said cam portion dimensioned to fit in said recess, a work-engaging and locating shoulder on said sleeve at the inner end of said reduced portion, the reduced portion of said sleeve having elongated slots registrable with a work piece on said reduced portion, keys in said slots engageable with said cam portion, and resilient means interposed between said second body and sleeve urging said sleeve outwardly on said cam portion.

Claims (1)
1. AN EXPANDING ARBOR COMPRISING A FIRST BODY HAVING A PILOTING RECESS OPENING INTO ONE END THEREOF, A SECOND BODY, A SLEEVE SLIDABLE ON SAID SECOND BODY AND HAVING AN END PORTION SLIDABLE IN SAID PILOTING RECESS, RESILIENT MEANS INTERPOSED BETWEEN SAID SECOND BODY AND SLEEVE URGING SAID SLEEVE TOWARD SAID FIRST BODY, STOP MEANS BETWEEN SAID SLEEVE AND SECOND BODY, SAID SECOND BODY HAVING A PORTION SLIDABLY RECEIVED IN THE END PORTION OF SAID SLEEVE AND PROVIDED THEREIN WITH A PLURALITY OF TAPERED GROOVES, SLOTS IN THE END PORTION OF SAID SLEEVE IN REGISTRATION WITH SAID TAPERED GROOVES, KEYS EXTENDING THROUGH SAID SLOTS AND HAVING INCLINED BOTTOM SURFACES RECEIVED IN SAID GROOVES, AND MEANS FOR MOVING SAID FIRST AND SECOND BODIES IN APPROACH AND SEPARATION SUCH THAT UPON APPROACH SAID SLEEVE PRESSES A WORK GEAR SUPPORTED ON THE END PORTION THEREOF AGAINST A LOCATING SURFACE ON SAID FIRST BODY AND THEREAFTER CONTINUED APPROACH RESULTS IN SLIDING MOVEMENT OF THE END PORTION OF SAID SECOND BODY IN THE END PORTION OF SAID SLEEVE TO CAM SAID KEYS RADIALLY OUTWARDLY INTO CLAMPING ENGAGEMENT WITH A WORKPIECE SUPPORTED ON THE END PORTION OF SAID SLEEVE.
