TOOL HOLDER. No. 329,969. Patented Nov. 10, 1885.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE E. SYVEET, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
TOOL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,969, dated November 10, 1885.
Application filed August 6, 1885.
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE E. SWEET, a citizen of the United States, and residing in the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented an Improvement in Tool-Holders, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to provide a tool-holder to be used as a handle for files, rasps, and the like, as well as to serve the purpose of a hand-vise to be clamped to wire, rods, &c., to enable them to be held or firmly grasped when desired.
To this end my invention consists, primarily, of a handle provided with a seat, a rigid jaw, and a movable jaw having a set-screw adapted to act on the seat to cause the movable jaw to firmly bind or clamp a file or other tool placed between said jaws.
The invention consists, also, of certain details of construction, substantially as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Figure l is aside elevation of my improved holder, showing a file clamped in its jaws. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the holder, showing a wire passed through its handle and clamped by the jaws; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the holder.
The handleA may be of usual or preferred construction, and it is provided with a seat, a, and rigid jaw b, which in the present instance is cast in one piece with the handle. The rigid jawbhas two projections or ears, 0, which receive a pin or pivot, d, that enters the slot 0 in the movable jaw f, so as to retain it to the rigidjaw, while permitting a limited movement of the former on the latter, the pin serving as a pivot or fulcrum for the movable jaw when it is operated to clamp a tool to the lower or rigid jaw. Aset or thumb screw, 9, passes through the rear end of the movable jaw, and is adapted, when operated, to act or press upon the seata of the handle to cause the front end or jaw proper to clamp a tool placed between both jaws. The seat a is made of some length, and the movable jaw,at the bottom of the piv0tslot e, is provided with several grooves, e, to receive, one at a time, the pivot-pin and enable-the movable jaw to Serial No.173,695. (No model.)
have movement vertically and longitudinally to permit larger or smaller files or other tools to be placed between the jaws, and thus increase the capacity and usefulness of the toolholder. The handle is provided with the openings 2 3, to enable wire or rods to be passed 'therethrough when desired and be clamped between the jaws,to provide, in effect, a handvise for the use of jewelers and others, as will readily be seen from an inspection of Fig. 2 of the drawings. The rigid jaw has a central longitudinal groove, 4, in the line of the opening 2,to allow a three-cornered file to be more firmly clamped in the jaws.
The jaws proper are of considerable width, to permit flat files to be securely clamped and braced therein.
By this construction the holder is adapted to receive tools of various sizes and shapes, while retaining simplicity of parts with ease of operation.
\Vhat I claim is- 1. An improved tool-holder, consisting of a handle provided with the lengthened seat, a rigid jaw having a pivot-pin, and a movable jaw provided with a pivot-slot having two or more steps or seats in different planes, to receive, one at ajtime, the pivot-pin, asspecified. and a set-screw, as and for the-purpose set forth.
2. An improved tool-holder, consisting of a handle provided with a rigid jaw, and having an opening through the longitudinal center of said handle for the passage of wire to the jaw, as specified, and a movable jaw pivoted to the rigid jaw, and provided with a setscrew adapted to bear on the handle, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. Ahollow handle provided with end openings, the seat a, and rigid jaw having a pivotpin, combined with a movable jaw having a pivot-slot to receive the pin, and a set-screw adapted to bear against the seat, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
