UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. LIEB, OF NE\V YORK, N. Y.
PAPER-PUNCHING PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,323, dated October 27, 1885 Application filed October 2, 1884. Serial No. 144,568. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. LIEB, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have in vented new and useful Improvements in Paper- Punching Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in punching-presses of that class which are intended for punching holes into piles formed of alarge number of sheets of paper or other materials.
The peculiar and novel construction of my punching-press is pointed out in the following specification and claims, and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section in the plane a: m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a front view. Fig. 3 is a sectional rear view, the plane of section being indicated by the line 3 Fig.1. Fig. 4 is a plan or top View; and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view, on an enlarged scale, of one of the hollow punches.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letterA designates the frame of the machine, the part A of which is provided with suitable guideways,in which the table-carriage Bslides. T o the table-carriage B is secured the table 0 by means of screws a, Fig. 2, passing through slots (0 in the table, thus permitting the position of the table to be adjusted by the screw 11, passing through the bottom of the table-carriage, and to be fixed, when in the desired position, by screwing up said screws a.
D is a shaft passing through the frame A, carrying on one end the pulley E, which receives rotary motion from a belt, and on the other end a cam, F. A recess, 0, in this cam engages a stud, c, screwed into the hub f, formed on the back of the table-carriage B.
The cam F and the stud 0 form mechanism for imparting motion from the shaft D to the table-carriage B, and consequently to the table 0 connected therewith.
G is the tool-carriage,which slides in guideways in the table-carriage B, and is provided with two split clamps, d e, the lower clamp, e, passing through a slot, 1), in the table 0. Into the clamps d e are firmly secured, inline with each other, the two punches H I, by drawing up the screws of the clamps.
Inv a hub, g, which is formed on the back of the tool-carriage and projects through a slot, 9, in the table-carriage B, is secured a stud, h, which is connected by a pitman, i, with the eccentric wrist-pin j, secured to the face of the cam F or to the shaft D.
The shaft D, the wrist-pin j, and the stud h form mechanism for imparting to the tool-carriage a reciprocating motion.
To the part A of the frame A is secured,by means of screws 9, a stationary abutment, L, provided with or forming the split clamp Z, through which passes the punch H. In the lower part of the split clamp l is inserted a die, m, drilled centrally, to allow the passage of the lower part of the punch H, andto form a guide for the same. The outer diameter of this die is made somewhat larger than that of the punch, so that the clamp lcan be drawn tightly upon the die without bringing the clamp to bear upon the punch sufficientlyhard to interfere with its motion. The punch I passes through the split clamp n, into which clamp is inserted a die, 0, which performs a similar service in relation to the punch I as the die m does for the punch H. Both punches H I are made hollow (see Fig. 5) to allow the passage of the wads of material punched out, and consist of an enlarged part, d, serving as a stem, and the interchangeable part or punching end (i In the drawings the machine is shown in its normal position. In said position the recess in the cam F is in its top position and engages the stud c, and the center of the wrist-pinj is on a horizontal linewith the center of theshaft D. In the operation of the machine, after the pile of paper or other material to be punched has been laid upon the table 0 the pulley E is given a rotary motion, so as to turn the cam F in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 2. The stud 0, Figs. 1 and 3, is at once lifted out of the recess in the cam, raising the table-carriage B, so as to compress the pile of paper to be punched between the abutment L and the table 0. As the motion of the shaft D progresses, the tool-carriage G is given an upward inotion, and the lower punch, I, enters the material to be punched, and by the relative proportions of the parts is made to enter to about 5 the center of the pile. The eccentric wrist-pin j is now at its topmost position, and on further motion the lower punch, I, is withdrawn and the upper punch, H, enters the pile to be punched, punching a hole in line with that IO punched by the punch I. When the cam F has returned to its normal position, the table 0 will again have been lowered, and the punched pile of papers or other material can now be removed.
Instead of using two punches, as shown in the drawings, only one punch may be used, preferably the top one, H. Said punch, having imparted to it a reciprocating motion, is made to pass completely throughthe pile of papers or other material; but by using two punches a greater thickness may be punched at one time, the advantage being the possibility of using shorter punches, the use of long punches being disadvantageous on account of their liability to break.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by. Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, in a punching-press,of a frame, A, provided with a stationary abutment, L, a table-carriage, B, automatically reciprocated in a right line in guides on the frame, a table, 0, connected to and moving with the table-carriage, a reciprocating toolcarriage, G, and a punch, H, carried by the latter, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a punching-machine, of a frame, A, provided with guides and a stationary abutment, L, a table-carriage, B, arranged in the guides of the frame, and pro vided with an attached table, G, mechanism, substantially as described, for reciprocating the table-carriage and table in a right line on the frame, and a reciprocating tool-carriage, G, provided with two punches acting in opposite directions, substantially as described.
The combination, substantially as hereinbefore described,of the stationary abutment L, the table 0, mechanism, substantially as described, for imparting to the table a movement toward and from the abutment, and two punches, H I, acting in opposite directions.
Intestimony whereof Ihave hereunto setmy hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES A. LIEB. lVitnesscs:
WV. HAUFF, I E. F. KAs'rENHUBER.
