Description

(No Model.)
A. B FRENCH. FIRE SCREEN AND VENTILATOR.
No. 328,932. Patented Oct. 27, 1885.
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT EDWARD FRENCH, OF EAST TAWAS, MICHIGAN.
FIRE-SCREEN AND VENTILATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,932, dated October 2'7, 1885.
Application filed February 26, 1834. Serial No. 122,085.
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, A. E. FRENoH,a citizen of the United States, residing at East Tawas, in the county of Iosco and State of lWIichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a FireScreen and Ventilator or Air-Girculator Combined; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and ex act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is a fire-screen and ventilator or circulator of air combined, for saving fuel and adding to the comfort of g dwellings by drawing the cold air from the floor and allowing the warm air at the ceiling to fall. These results are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the drawings herewith filed as part hereof, in which the same letters of reference denote the same parts in all the views.
Figure l is a front elevation, partly in sec tion. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical section.
A A A represent the body of the screen and air'circulator, composed of a sheet-metal front, A, affixed to and extending to the edges of the side pieces, A A, to the rear of which are affixed a transverse piece or pieces, A, about one-half of an inch in thickness, thus forming an inclosure or air-chamber, D, in the lower or wide part of which is a.centrally-located piece, d, to which the front and rear walls are secured, for the purpose of stiffening the structure and preventing it from being warped by heat or other causes. B is a pipe or conduit provided with a damper, O, having operating-handle O. B is an elbow for connectingthe ventilator or circulator with (No model.)
the Stovepipe, about eighteen inches above the uptake-opening in the stove, from a position between the stove and the wall, and it should be large enough to protect the latter from the heat of the stove. It will thus perform the duty of a screen. The metal part A should face the stove.
The operation as a ventilator or circulator is very simple and easily controlled. By opening the damper G a cold'air current will be started into the stove-pipe, thus causing the fire to burn steadily, and drawthe cold air through the air-chamber D'by Way of the flooropenings a, as indicated by the arrows, thus allowing the warm air at the ceiling to fall, the result being a nearly equal temperature in all parts of the room.
Having explained the construction and op eration of my improvement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
' The combination,in a combined screen and ventilator, of the case or body composed of a front screen port-ion, A, sides A, and rear A, the parts being contracted toward their mouth, a pipe-section, B, connecting with said contracted portion and having an elbow, B, a damper, G, and a central dividing-piece, d, designed to divide the lower portion of the casing into distinct apartments, and also to reenforce the front and rear sections to prevent the same from warping.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT EDYVARD FRENCH.
