(Cl. -17) This invention relates to a bed forming seating device basically, in the form of a couch although the vitalizing features of the device may be adapted to an extensible chair.

The invention contemplates a seating device having a back rest, upholstered arm rests, frame members at each end of the seating device whereby to slidably support a bed frame having a mattress and means connected through the mattress frame and a front leg of the end frames whereby to shift the bed frame outwardly to form a full length bed.

An object of the invention resides in a slidable bed frame carrying a mattress and with the bed frame in the closed position of the device partially underlying an 3,283,341 Patented Nov. 8, 1966 the arm rests are suitably upholstered in theconventional manner.

Slidable upon the frame members 6, is a rectangular mattress supporting frame 15, carrying a conventional mattress 16. The mattress frame 15 is provided with conventional springs 17, fixed to the frame 15 at its opposite ends and along its sides. The frame 15 is held against displacement from the rail 6 by a hook 18 at each end, that is fixed to the end rails of the frame 15 and extend downwardly to hook under the rails 6, permitting the frame 15 and its mattress to be shifted outwardly to a bed forming position, such as that illustrated in FIGURES 5 and 7. As clearly shown in FIGURE 2, when the frame 15 and the mattress 16 are shifted inwardly, it extends beneath the overhang of the back rest 10, exposing an area of the mattress similar to the depth of a conventional seating area.

Novel features of construction and operation of the device will be more clearly apparent during the course of the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein has been illustrated a preferred form of the device and wherein like characters of reference are employed to denote like parts throughout the several figures.

Referring specifically to the drawings, there has been illustrated a couch, indicated as a whole by the numeral 5. The couch embodies end frame members, including a horizontal rail 6, a forward leg 7 and an elongated vertical frame member 8, that also constitutes a rear leg 9. The frame members are identical in construction and are preferably formed of angle iron.

Fixed to the extensions 8, is a back rest 10. The back rest is fixed to the extensions 8 by bolts 11 and the front of the back rest is extended forwardly to form an overhang 12, for a purpose to be presently described. Also fixed to the frame members, including the extensions 8 and the rail 6, are arm rests 13. The arm rests are bolted to the frame members by the bolts 11 and 14, passing through apertures formed in the frame members and whereby the back rest and the arm rests are securely anchored to the frame members. The back rests and Means are provided to shift the frame 15 and its supported mattress forwardly along the rails 6, comprising a forward pivotally supported and upholstered board 19. The board 19 at its opposite ends is connected to triangular plates 20 by wings 21, bent at a right angle from the plate 20 and that is screwed or otherwise connected to the rear surface of the board 19. The plate 20 is pivotally connected to the forward legs 7, by pivot bolts 22 while the upper portion of the plate 20 is pivotally conshifted upon the rail 6, to move the frame 15 and the mattress 16 forwardly, as illustrated in FIGURES 6 and 7. In the rearmost position, the frame 15 is fully supported upon the upper surface of the rails 6 and in the outer position, the frame 15 at its outermost position is supported flat upon the rails 6.

In the use of the device, the couch is assembled, with the

6, 7, 8 and 9 being connected to the back rest 10 and the arm rest 13 are connected to the frame members by the bolts 11 and 14. The bed frame 15 is then engaged over the rails 6 after the plate 20 has been pivotally connected thereto by pivot bolts 23 and then the frame 15 is engaged by the mattress 16. The lower pivot bolt 22 is then extended through an aperture in the forward legs 7, after the plates have been connected to the front board 19 and the device is now ready for use. Normally, the area of the mattress that is exposed when the frame 15 is in the innermost position is not of sufficient width to constitute a bed and, when the device is to be adjusted to form a bed, the operator merely pulls the board 19, forwardly and downwardly, partially raising the frame 15 and simultaneously moving it forwardly as shown clearly in FIGURE 6 and eventually to the position illustrated in FIGURE 7. Both longitudinal edges of the mattress are free to receive bed clothing and when the device is to be retracted, the operator merely pulls upwardly upon the board 19, reversing the movement of the frame 15 so that the inner marginal edge of the mattress will be disposed between the overhang 12 of the back rest 10.

It will be apparent from the foregoing that a very novel bed forming seating device has been provided. The parts are simple, easily assembled, and are most effective to form a convenient bed forming conventional seating device. The structure of the several components of this device functions to permit the packing of the elements for shipping purposes. The component elements of this device may also readily be adapted to a conventional upholstered chair and functions substantially identical to that just described.

It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction shown, but that changes are contemplated as readily fall within the spirit of the invention as shall be determined by the scope of the subjoined claims.

I claim:

1. A bed forming seating device comprising a pair of metallic end frames each having a horizontal rail and floor legs at each end of the rail, the floor legs at the rear end of the rail being extended upwardly and jointly carrying an upholstered back rest and upholstered arm rests, the back rest being extended forwardly to form an overhang area, a rectangular bed frame having springs for the support of a mattress, the bed frame having parallel side rails and parallel end rails, the mattress supporting frame being slidably supported upon the rails of the end frames, means for supporting the mattress frame against displacement from the rails of the end frames, an upholstered front board, plates to which the front board is rigidly attached, said plates being pivotally attached to the front legs and pivotally connected to the end rails of the mattress frame, the front board adapted to swing in a vertical plane to both lift and slide the mattress frame forwardly or rearwardly, the mattress frame and its supported mattress when shifted rearwardly having its rear end inserted under the overhang of the back rest and, when shifted forwardly, to expose the full area of the mattress as a sleeping surface and free from contact with the back rest, the rear legs of the end frames being extended upwardly to engage within the back rest and bolts extending through arm rests and the back rest for fixedly supporting the back rest of the arm rests against movement.

The structure according to claim 1 wherein the front board is fixedly connected to triangular plates that are pivotally connected to the front legs by pivot bolts and also pivotally connected to the end rails of the mattress mattress supporting frame upwardly and moves the frame forwardly upon the rails of the end frames and to move the mattress from beneath the overhang of the back rest and to extend the mattress forwardly away from the back rest to constitute a full length bed.

3. A bed-forming and seating device comprising, a pair of end frames each having a horizontal railextending between and connecting front and rear legs, a mattress-supporting frame slidable upon the rails to and from a bed-forming. position, plates pivotally connected to a front leg of each frame and also to a transverse rail of the mattress-supporting frame whereby the mattress-sup- I porting frame can be shifted outwardly to expose a matw supporting frame by pivot bolts, the triangular plates being provided with a right angle lip portion that are fixedly connected to the rear wall of the boards whereby, When the board is swung downwardly, partially lifts the tress on said frame for the full area of the mattress, said plates being fixedly attached to a front board which extends between them, the spacing between the pivots for each plate being such that upon the retracting movement of the mattress-supporting frame the forward part of said frame is first lifted and then lowered, a back rest and arm rests fixed to the end frames, the back rest having its lower end elevated above the mattress-supporting frame so that the rear portion of the mattress will extend below the lower end of the back rest when the mattress is in seating position, and the front board being of a size .to extend in front of and cover the forward edge of the mattress when the mattress is in seating, position.

Claims

1. A BED FORMING SEATING DEVICE COMPRISING A PAIR OF METALLIC END FRAMES EACH HAVING A HORIZONTAL RAIL AND FLOOR LEGS AT EACH END OF THE RAIL, THE FLOOR LEGS AT THE REAR END OF THE RAIL BEING EXTENDED UPWARDLY AND JOINITLY CARRYING AN UPHOLSTERED BACK REST AND UPHOLSTERED ARM RESTS, THE BACK REST BEING EXTENDED FORWARDLY TO FORM AN OVERHANG AREA, A RECTANGULAR BED FRAME HAVING SPRINGS FOR THE SUPPORT OF A MATTRESS, THE BED FRAME HAVING PARALLEL SIDES RAILS AND PARALLEL END RAILS, THE MATTRESS SUPPORTING FRAME BEING SLIDABLY SUPPORTED UPON THE RAILS OF THE END FRAMES, MEANS FOR SUPPORTING THE MATTRESS FRAME AGAINST DISPLACEMENT FROM THE RAILS OF THE END FRAMES, AN UPHOLSTERED FRONT BOARD, PLATES TO WHICH THE FRONT BOARD IS RIGIDLY ATTACHED, SAID PLATES BEING PIVOTALLY ATTACHED TO THE FRONT LEGS AND PIVOTALLY CONNECTED TO THE END RAILS OF THE MATTRESS FRAME, THE FRONT BOARD ADAPTED TO SWING IN A VERTICAL PLANE TO BOTH LIFT AND SLIDE THE MATTRESS FRAME FORWARDLY OR REARWARDLY, THE MATTRESS FRAME AND ITS SUPPORTED MATTRESS WHEN SHIFTED REARWARDLY HAVING ITS REAR END INSERTED UNDER THE OVERHANG OF THE BACK REST AND, WHEN SHIFTED FORWARDLY, TO EXPOSE THE FULL AREA OF THE MATTRESS AS A SLEEPING SURFACE AND FREE FROM CONTACT WITH THE BACK REST, THE REAR LEGS OF THE END FRAMES BEING EXTENDED UPWARDLY TO ENGAGE WITHIN THE BACK REST AND BOLTS EXTENDING THROUGH ARM RESTS AND THE BACK REST FOR FIXEDLY SUPPORTING THE BACK REST OF THE ARM RESTS AGAINST MOVEMENT.
