Description

(No Model.)
G. GOFFIN.
CHRISTMAS TREE HOLDER.
NOQ 328,007.
- Patented 001;. 13, 1885.
. I a "'0'. INVENTEIR WITNESEEE UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GALEN OOFFIN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
CHRISTMAS-TREE HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,007, dated October 13, 1885.
Application filed October 27, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GALEN COFFIN, of Boston, (Somerville,) in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in ChristmasTree Holders, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap quick-working clamp, which will sustain a Christmas-tree or any vertical rod or staff, the entire clamp being made of detachable pieces of castiron, no machine work being required. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 isa plan view of the cam-disk. Fig. 3 is a vertical section.
The principal or foundation piece of my device is a tripod, A A A, Fig. 1, each of the feet of which has a screw, as shown at A, by means of which the tripod may be securely fastened to the floor. Each branch A of the tripod is cast with a vertical opening, K K, and with a trunnion-rest, as shown at F.
E E E are three clamping-pieces pivoted on their trunnions F, so that they may swing inwardly and outwardly.
B is a cam-disk. (Shown in detail at Fig.
2.) This cam-disk has a central opening, L, which fits onto a downwardly-projecting part, L, Fig. 3, of the tripod A A A, so that it can revolve freely about it.
0 O 0, Figs. 1- and 2, are cam-slots, each terminating in an enlarged opening, D.
The lower end of each of the clamps Eis Serial No. 146,603. (No modelJ provided with a round head, H, Fig. 3, this head being made of such a size as to freely enter the enlarged opening D, but too large to pass through any part of the slot 0, so that when these clamp-pieces E E E are all placed in position (as they can be when the openings D are placed in the position occupied by the lower ends, H, of the clamps) the cam-disk B may be turned slightly and look all the parts of the instrument together.
From the above description it will be seen that by turning the cam-disk B in one direc tion the clamps E, swinging on the trunnions F, will open, and that by turning it in the opposite direction they will be closed together. By this construction all the parts are easily put together or detached, and all of the parts can be cast, no machine work being required to finish the instrument. The lower recess, K, Fig. 3, formed in the tripod A, should be made conical, so as to hold staffs of different sizes equally secure.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination of the tripod A A A, and the clamps E E E, having trunnions F, with the cam-disk B, all operating together substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 25th day of October, A. D. 1884..
GALEN COFFIN.
