Description
Oct. 18, 1966 M. MAKAR 3,278,977
AUTOMOBILE WASHING MOP EMPLOYING TWISTABLE MOP HEAD Filed Oct. 4, 1965 INVEN TOR 5' Maia {4 MAE/6675 United States Patent 3,278,977 AUTOMOBILE WASHING MOP EMPLOYING TWISTABLE MOP HEAD Michael Mal-tar, 311 E. 93rd St., New York, N.Y. Filed Oct. 4, 1965, Ser. No. 492,438 1 Claim. (Cl. 15-567) My invention is directed toward a device for washing and cleaning automobiles and the like.
Accordingly, it is an object of my invention to provide a new and improved device of the character indicated, having a mop-like action.
Another object is to provide a new and improved device of the character indicated which has a hollow handle through which water can flow and a mop-head with associated means for efi'iciently and quickly removing water therefrom.
Still another object is to provide a new and improved device of the character indicated, which can be manufactnred easily and inexpensively.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages will now be explained with reference both to this specification and to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a top view of my device;
FIGURE 2 is a side view thereof;
FIGURE 3 illustrates the process for removing water from the mop-head of the device of FIGURE 1; and
FIGURE 4 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of the mop-head of the device of FIGURE 1.
Referring now to FIGURES 1, 2 and 4, there is shown an inverted hollow vertical cup-like member open at its bottom end and closed at its top end, except for a central vertical bore 12 having a vertical hollow sleeve 14 positioned therein. Sleeve 14 has a horizontal lip 15 about its bottom end. A vertical rotatable shaft 16 is vertically slidable within the sleeve. Secured to the bottom end of shaft 16 below lip 14 is a somewhat curved downward circular plate 18. A fibrous mop-head 20 having a plurality of strands is joined at its top end to the bottom of plate 18 by bolts 22.
A hollow generally horizontal handle open at both ends, has one end threadedly engaging a port in the side of member 10. The other end of handle is adapted [for detachable engagement with a hose 34 through which water can be supplied to the device.
A hollow curved member 36 having a vertical axis and large upper top and bottom ends, surrounds mop-head 20 intermediate its top and bottom ends. Member 36 is bolted to the inside of member 10 by bolts 38. A rubber member 40 having a lip curved upward about the bottom edge of member 10 is interposed between members 10 and 36.
The bottom ends of the strands of mop-head 20 are folded around the bottom end of member 36 and extend upward and are clamped between member 36 and member 40.
3,278,977 Patented Oct. 18, 1966 The upper end of shaft 16 contains a transverse hori zontal pin 26 extending therethrough. This end has a vertical groove 28 spanned by pin 26. A flattened end 42 of a shaft 44 rides in this groove and has an elongated slot 46 through which pin 26 extends.
The other end of shaft 44 can be detachably secured to clamp 48 on handle 30, as shown in FIGURES 1, 2 and 4.
To wring water out of the mop-head, shaft 44 is first swung to a vertical position as shown in FIGURE 2, and then pushed downward through sleeve 14 to force plate 18 downward below member 36, as shown in FIG- URE 3. Thereafter, shaft 14 can be rotated about its own axis, thus rotating shaft '16, twisting the fibers of the mophead to squeeze water thereout.
While I have described my invention with particular reference to the drawings, my protection is to be limited only by the terms of the claim which follows.
I claim as follows:
An automobile cleaning device comprising an inverted hollow cup-like member open at its bottom end, said member having a vertical bore in its top end and an aperture in its side wall, a hollow sleeve vertically disposed in said bore, a first vertical shaft vertically slidable in said sleeve and rotatable about its own axis, the top end of said first shaft having a vertical slot and a horizontal pin spanning said slot, a mop head secured to the bottom end of said first shaft and to the cup-like member, a handle open at both ends and secured at one end to said aperture, whereby water can be fed through the other end of said handle to said mop head, a second shaft having one end slidably and pivotally coupled to said pin, whereby when said shafts are vertically aligned and pushed downward, said second shaft can be rotated about its own axis to rotate said first shaft about its own axis to twist said head and squeeze water thereout, and means attached to said handle to deta-chably engage said second shaft intermediate its ends and secure same horizontally along said handle when said head is not to be twisted.
