UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE.
JOHN OORYVIN BUDD, OF DEFIANOE, OHIO.
FARM
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,654, dated October 6, 1885.
Application filed April 15, 1885.
Serial No. 162,327. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. Bonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Defiance, in the county of Defiance and State of Ohio, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Farm Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in swinging gates; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The object of my invention is to provde a gate that may be opened and closed by aperson in a vehicle or on horseback without the necessity of getting out of the vehicle or dismounting.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a swinging gate embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line so a: of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the latch.
A represents the post to which the gate is hinged. B represents the swinging gate, and 0 represents the post against which the gate closes. In the upper end of the post A are fulcrumed the levers DE. The outer ends of these levers are provided with depending ropes or cords F, and their inner ends are connected by means of ropes or cords G to the bent levers H, which are fulcrumed to the top rail of the gate near the inner end thereof, and are connected at their lower ends below said rail by a ring, I.
K represents a latoh, which slides under the outer end of the top rail of the gate and is kept normally pressed out-ward in engagement with a notch, M, that is formed in the inner side of the post 0 by means of a spring, N.
L represents the cord which connects the ring Iwith the inner end of the latch K.
The operation of my invention is as follows: When it is desired to open the gate, one of the levers fulcrumed in the post is pulled down. As the inner end of said lever rises it actuates the bent levers H, which withdraw, by means of the cord L, the latch K from the notch in the post 0, and the gate is swung open. After passing through the gate the outer end of the oppositely-extended lever is lowered, and the gate is caused to swing to against the post C, and the latch, by reason of the spring N, is caused to engage with the notch M and secure the gate in a closed position.
I am aware that a gatehaving a springactuated sliding latch and levers extending from opposite sides of the gate and connected to the latch for withdrawing the latter and swing ing the gate is not broadly new, and this, therefore, broadly I disclaim. My construction possesses superior advantages over gates of this class heretofore constructed, so far as I am aware, in point of simplicity and cheapness, and from the further fact that my operating-levers move independently of each other, thus requiring very little exertion to open or close my gate.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination of the swinging gate, the post A, to which the gate is hinged, and the post 0, against which the gate closes, said post having the notch M, with the levers D E, fulerumed to the post A, the bent levers H, fulcrumed to the gate and connected directly to the inner ends of the levers D E by the cords or ropes G, and the spring-actuated latch K, secured to the gate and connected to the free ends of the levers H by the cord L, suhstantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto atlixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN CORWIN BUDD.
