UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VLADIMIR S. BEKOFSKY, OF JENGHUAN, GOREA.
HAIR-CUTTING MACHINE.
.iPI-ICIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.327,512, dated October 6, 1885.
Application filed March 31,4885. Serial No. 160,748.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VLADIMIR S. BEKoE- SKY, of J enchuan, Gorea, have invented anew and Improved Hair-Cutting Machine,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved machine for clipping and cutting the hair on persons heads, which is so constructed that it need not be operated by hand nor connected with exterior mechanism.
The invention consists in various parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side view of my improved hair-cutting machine. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a front .view. Fig. 4 is a plan view, parts being broken out and others in section. Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view. Fig. 6 is a plan View of the comb. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the knife. Fig. 8 is a side view of the brake.
A metal box, A, is open at the bottom and is provided with a movable top, which at the rear edge may be slightly beveled, as shown at A, Fig. 2, or may be straight. On the outer surface on each side of the box two upright guides, B, are secured, in which the legs 0 slide, which are united at their lower ends by the longitudinal pieces D, which have their front bottom corners rounded, and between the rear corners of which a roller, D, is journaled. The legs are provided with a series of apertures, O, for receiving pins 0, projecting through the sides of the box from the free ends of springs E, secured on the inner surfaces of the sides of the box, and against which a push-button, E, rests, which projects from the outside of the box. From the front legs a comb, F, projects, which may be made horizontal, or may be made to project upward slightly, and is of the usual construction. One end tooth, F, may be made considerably wider than the rest of the teeth, or the end tooth may be shaped as shown at F and about the same width as the usual teeth.
(No model.)
In the bottom of the box, at the front part, a knife-plate, G, is held, the front edge of which is provided with triangular teeth having sharp edges, the said plate being secured at its ends to the box. Parts of the said plate are punched out and pressed upward to form upwardly projecting prongs H, the parts punched out being shown in dotted lines in Fig. 7. The prongs H pass through slots J in a knife-plate, K, resting on the plate G, but of less length, so that the plate K can reciprocate on the plateG in the direction of the length of the slots H. The upper knife-plate, K, is concaved transversely, so that only its front toothed edge and its rear edge rest on the plate G, for the purpose of avoiding undue friction. Parts of the upper plate are punched out to form two upwardly-projecting lugs, L, between which an eccentric disk, M, is located, which is mounted on a vertical shaft, N, journaled in the bottom cuttingplate and in the horizontal partition 0 of the box.
A slot or like aperture is provided in the front of the box directly above the comb, through which slot the teeth of the two knifeplates pass.
A clock-spring is secured on a shaft, P, the upper end of which is squared and arranged below an aperture in the top of the box, which aperture can be closed by a pivoted piece, 0.
By means of suitable gearing the motion is transmitted from the spring-shaft P to the shaft N, carrying the eccentric M for operating the reciprocating knife.
A fan, R, or wind-regulator is operated by the clock-work, and adjacent to the same an elbow lever, S, is pivoted on the inner surface of the front of the box or on the upper surface of the bottom in sucha manner that when the bottom shank of the said lever is raised by a spring, T, placed below it, the fan will strike against the lever and be prevented from revolving.
A sliding push-button, U, is arranged in the front of the box, which is to be used to press the upper end of the elbow-lever S inward, thereby pressing the end of the bottom shank downward and releasing the fan.
The key W, for winding the clock-work, is held in the pocketV on one side of the box.
The number of cog-wheels, &c., used for driving the reciprocating knife-plate can be varied, as may be desired; but preferably the working-shaftN should make about sixty revolutions for one revolution of the spring-shaft. The clock-work mechanism is of the usual construction.
The operation is as follows: The clock-work mechanism is wound by means of the key WV, and when the machine is not in use it is prevented from operating by the brake-lever S, which looks the fan R. WVhen the machine is to operate, the operator presses on the knob I U on the front of the machine, whereby the free end of the bottom shank of the lever is pressed downward and the flier or wing re leased, and then the machine is passed over the head, the comb F passing through the hair, which is cut off by the fixed and reciprocating knife-plates a greater or less distance 7 above the comb. If the hair is to be cut very short, the legs must be so adjusted in the box that the comb is very near to the cutters; but if the hair is not to be cut so short the legs must be so adjusted in the box that the distance between the comb and the cutters is greater. To adjust the legs, the buttons E are pressed inward, whereby the pins 0 on the ends of the springbars E on the interior of the box are pressed out of the holes 0 in the legs C, thus permitting of pulling the legs down or pushing them up. As soon as the said buttons are released, the spring-bars E press the pins 0 back into the aperture 0', thus locking the legs 0 in place.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure Letters Patent 1. In a hair-cutter, the combination, with the box A, of the pocketsBon the sides of the same, the legs 0, united by the pieces D and having apertures O, the springs E, the pins 0 on the ends of the same, the push pins or buttons E, adapted'to act on the springs E,
a comb held on the front ends of the pieces D, a cutting device above the comb, and a clock work mechanism contained in the box and adapted to operate the cutting device, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a hair-cutter, the combination, with the fixed toothed cutting-plate G, having parts H punched out and bent upward, of the re ciprocating toothed cutting-plate K, resting on the plate G and having slots through which the parts H pass, the lugs L, on the plate K, and the eccentric disk M, mounted on a shaft, N, operated by a clock-work mechanism in the box, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a hair-cutter, the combination, with a box, of adjustable legs held on the sides of the same, a roller, D, held between the legs, the comb F, projecting from the legs, a cutting device above the comb, and a clock-work mechanism contained in the box for the purpose of operating the cutting device, substantially as herein shown and described.
