To ctZZ whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, THOMAS J. HASLAM, of Dublin, Ireland. have invented a new and Improved Saddle-Bar, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved saddlebar for holding the runner to which the stirrupstrap is secured, and which is so constructed that the runner is held securely under ordinary circumstances, but becomes detached automatically when the rider is thrown or falls from his horse and is in danger of being dragged by the animal.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side view of my improved saddlebar, showing the parts in the normal position. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, showing the position the runner assumesiu becoming detached on the side on which the rider falls. Fig. 3 is an end view of the device, and Fig. 4 is a side view, showing the positions the runner assumes when detached on the side opposite to that on which the rider falls.
The plate A has two hook-flanges, B B, formed on its lower edge, the said flanges projecting from the outer surface of the plate, the hook B having its inner edge beveled, as at b.
The runner C has an eye or slot, D, for receiving the upper end of the stirrup-strap, and a T cross-piece, E, on its upper end, the cross-piece E and the eye being united by a flat stem, F, having its under surface beveled at c. The distance between the ends of the hooks B B and the plate A is'a trifle less than the diameter of the cross-piece E of the runner 0, so that the said cross-piece can only be withdrawn from the books when in the position shown in Fig.1, by force applied to the same, when the hooks will yield sufficiently to allow it to pass out, as hereinafter described. To facilitate the entrance of the cross-piece into the hooks and its withdrawal therefrom, the crosspiece E is beveled at G, so that the diameter of the said cross-piece at the bevel will be less than the distance between the ends of the hooks and plate.
The operation is as follows: YVhen the rider is thrown over the horsesback, either toward the front or rear, the stirrup-strap and the runner'on the side opposite to that which the rider falls will be swung up against the plate A, and the short diameter of the cross-piece E-will be between the ends of the hooks B B and the plate A, and the runner disengaged from the plate, as shownin full or dotted lines in Fig. 4, according to whether the rider is thrown toward the front or rear. The runner on the side on which the rider falls is disengaged from the hooks by the weight of the falling rider, which causes the stirrupleather to drag baek ward, whereupon one end of the cross-piece E of the runner will be forced out of the hook B, the same yielding sufficiently to permitit, and the runner-will a sume the position shown in Fig. 2; and by the continued weight of the fallen rider on the stirrup-leather the bevel c of the runner will ride up the bevel I) of the hook B, and the runner disengage from the plate.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- 1. The combination, with a plate having hooks, one of which is beveled at b, of a runner having a cross-piece and a stem beveled on its under surface, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. A saddle-bar consisting of the plate A, provided with the hooks B B, the hook B being beveled at b, and the runner 0 provided with the slot D, the cross-piece E having bevel a, as set forth.
