(Cl. 122-115) This invention relates to domestic hea-ting boilers.
It has heretofore been proposed to provide domestic heating boilers having a boiler section above combustion chamber in which the boiler section is in the form of a tank with vertical tubular flues for gas connecting the top and bottom walls. In an attempt toimprove the efficiency of such boilers baiiles have been provided in the tubes to increase the contact of the hot gases with the walls of the tubular lines. Various gas collectors -have also heretofore been proposed but collecting the gases from the tubulal fines has left much to be desired.
It is the principal object of the present invention to provide a domestic heating 'boiler of the vertical ue type in which an improved gas collector is employe-d with attendant increase in heat absorption in the boiler.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a domestic heating boiler of the vertical flue type in which an improved gas collector is employed which increases the lheat absorption in the boiler without increasing the draft loss.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a domestic heating boiler of the vertical flue type in which an improved gas collector is provided, advantageously .made Iof sheet metal, and which is simple in construction and easy to retain in clean condition.
Other objects and advantageous features of the invention will be apparent from the description and claims.
The nature and characteristic features of the invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with Ithe accompanying drawings forming part thereof, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a view in elevation of a domestic heating boiler in accordance with the invention, parts being broken away to show the details of construction;
FIG. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken approxibately on the line 2-2 of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on the line 3-3 of FIG. 1.
It should, of course, be understood that the description and drawings herein are illustrative merely, and that various modifications and changes can be made in the structure `disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, in which a preferred embodiment of a boiler in accordance with the invention is illustrated, a combustion chamber is provided with an opening 11 for insertion of a burner (not shown) and a normally closed port or viewing opening 12. The combustion chamber 10 can be of any desi-red .type dependent upon the fuel to be burned.
The main boiler section preferably includes a horizontal top wall or top tube sheet 15, a horizontal bottom wall or lower tube sheet 16, opposite parallel pairs of vertical side walls 17, welded 4or otherwise secured together to provide a receptacle for the water to be heated. One of the walls 17 is provided with upper water access openings 18 and lower water access openings 19 for the connection of hot water delivery and cold water return pipes 20 and 21. The access openings 18 and 19 which are not used are closed by plugs 22 in a conventional manner.
The top tube sheet and bottom tube sheet 16 have secured thereto a plurality of gas conducting tubes 24, with two rows on each side of the center. The tubes 24 are secured in fluid tight relation to the sheets 15 and 16 to retain water therearound. The interiors of the tubes 24 communicate with the combustion chamber 10 for the passage of gas upwardly therethrough for heat transfer to the water in contact with the exterior surfaces of the tubes. The total cross sectional area of the tubes Z4 will be determined by the capacity of the boiler.
The tubes 24, or some of them, can be provided with interior helical bafiies 25 which increase the contact of the hot gases with the interior surfaces of the tubes 24 in a well known manner.
Above the top tube sheet 15 a gas collecting hood 26 is provided having a horizontal rectangular top wall 27 with opposite pairs of side walls 28 and 29 secured thereto carried on the top tube sheet 15. The hood 26 can be retained in place in any desired lmanner such as by the use of bolt retainers 30 of the type shown in U.S. Patent No. 3,115,177, secured at their lower ends to the tube sheet 15 for bolts 31 with nuts 32 and washers 33 carried thereon.
A flue pipe connector ring 34 is secured to the top tube wall 27 with the major portion thereof forwardly of the center, and also forwardly of the majority of the ltubes 24. The interior cross sectional area of the flue pipe connector ring 34 is preferably equal to the total cross sectional areas of the interiors of the tubes 24.
Within the gas collecting hood 26 an interior gas guiding baille construction is provided which preferably consists of two downwardly inclined walls 35 secured at their outer edges 36 to the top wall 27 in spaced relation to the side walls 28 and extending from one side wall 29 to the opposite side wall 29.
The inner ends of the walls 35 have horizontal strips 37 which are secured to horizontal angles 38v carried :by the walls 29. The inner margins 39 of the walls 35 are spaced to provide a rectangular opening 40 vertically approximately midway between the top tube sheet 15 and the wall 27.
The walls 35 thus divide the space with the hood into an upper chamber 41 with which the flue connector ring 34 is in communication and a lower chamber 42 with which the tubes 24 are in communication, and with communication between the chambers 41 and 42 at the opening 40;
The area of the `opening 40` is preferably approximately the same as the total -cross sectional areas of the interiors of the tubes 24.
The downward inclination of the walls 35 causes a change in direction of the gases from the tubes 24 so as to wipe the ltube sheet 15, with heat transfer to the water beneath, before passing through the opening 40 and then to the flue ring 34. This action increases the effective heat exchange without substantial increase in pressure drop through the tubes 24 and the gas hood 26 to the ring 34.
The boiler section, combustion chamber 10 and gas conducting hood 26 are preferably covered exteriorly with suitable insulation (not shown) and the assembly may be enclosed within a suitable cover (not shown) but as the insulation and cover form no part of the invention they have not been illustrated.
I claim:
1. In a domestic heating boiler having a combustion chamber and a superposed boiler section with spaced upper and lower tube sheets and spaced rows of vertical gas tubes therebetween for con-ducting the combustion gases in heat transfer relation, the Combination of a gas conducting hood carried on the upper tube sheet, said hood having a top Wall and side walls, a flue connector ring connected to said top wall, spaced interiorly disposed inclined walls in said gas hood, said walls being connected at .their outer ends to said top Wall and extending downwardly toward each other with their contiguous margins spaced to provide a central opening communicating with .a space thereabove with which said flue connector ring is in communication.
2. The combination as defined in claim 1 in which the gas tubes have their outlets spaced on each side of the center, the opening between said inclined walls is centrally located, and the flue ring is centrally located and 10 olset along said opening.
3. The combination as defined in claim 1 in which the total cross sectional area of said tubes and the area of said opening are substantially equal.
4. The combination as dened in claim 1 in which the 15 Icross sectional area of said Iopening and of the interior of said ue connector ring are substantially equal.
5. The combination as dened in claim 1 in which said gas conducting hood is detachably connected to said upper tube sheet by a plurality of connectors engaging 20 said tube sheet and said gas conducting hood.
6. The combination as defined in claim 1 in which said side walls include opposite -pairs of side walls, said interiorly disposed walls separate the interior of said gas conducting hood into an upper chamber in communica' tion with said flue connector ring and a lower chamber with which said gas tubes are in communication, said opening is centrally located in sai-d hood and is centrally located intermediate one of said pairs of side walls and extends between the Walls of `other of said pairs of side walls and said ue connector ring is aligned with said opening and oiset toward one end thereof.
'7. The combination as defined in claim 6 in which said gas tubes have their terminals in spaced rows `offset outwardly from said opening.

Claims (1)

1. IN A DOMESTIC HEATING BOILER HAVING A COMBUSTION CHAMBER AND A SUPERPOSED BOILER SECTION WITH SPACED UPPER AND LOWER TUBE SHEETS AND SPACED ROWS OF VERTICAL GAS TUBES THEREBETWEEN FOR CONDUCTING THE COMBUSTION GASES IN HEAT TRANSFER RELATION, THE COMBINATION OF A GAS CONDUCTING HOOD CARRIED ON THE UPPER TUBE SHEET, SAID HOOD HAVING A TOP WALL AND SIDE WALLS, A FLUE CONNECTOR RING CONNECTED TO SAID TOP WALL, SPACED INTERIORLY DISPOSED INCLINED WALLS IN SAID GAS HOOD, SAID WALLS BEING CONNECTED AT THEIR OUTER ENDS OF SAID TOP WALL AND EXTENDING DOWNWARDLY TOWARD EACH OTHER WITH THEIR CONTIGUOUS MARGINS SPACED TO PROVIDE A CENTRAL OPENING COMMUNICATING WITH A SPACE THEREABOVE WITH WHICH SAID FLUE CONNECTOR RING IS IN COMMUNICATION.
