Description
(No ModeL) J. BERNADAO.
TOOL FOR TRIMMING HORSES HOOPS.
No. 326,831. Patented Sept. 22, 1885.
IN VEWTOR WITNESSES Attorney &2 M
NITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
JEAN BERNADAC, OF NEYV IBERIA, LOUISIANA.
TOOL FOR TRIMMING HORSES HOOFS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,831, dated September 22, 1885.
Application filed May 11, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J EAN BERNADAC, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of New Iberia, in the county of Iberia and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Trimming Horses Hoofs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of knives used by farriers for trimming and cutting horses hoofs; and it consists in an improved knife of the above-mentioned class, in which the blade has a cutting-edge on each side, and is further provided with a pivoted handle for convenience in handling the knife, the said handle having projections which are adapted to be utilized to remove stones or other ob structions from the horses hoof.
Referring to the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the blade thereof.
The same letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Referring to the several parts by letter, A represents the blade, which is of a suitable length, and is beveled from the center toward each side, so as to form a cutting-edge on each side thereof, as shown more clearly in the sectional view, Fig. 2 of the drawings. This blade is provided at one end with the fixed handle B, and has pivotally secured to the other end the movable handle 0, which is rounded to afford a firm and convenient grip for the hand, and is further provided with the projections c, which are adapted to be utilized to remove stones or other obstructions from the horses hoof.
In using this knife, the farrier grasps the stationary handle B in his right hand, and takes hold of the pivoted handle 0 with his left hand, as shown in Fig. 1, the pivoted handle 0 admitting of the farrier turning his left hand without leaving hold of the said handle, thereby enabling him to use either edge of the blade A from right to left, at any inclination, without changing or loosening the grasp of his hands on the handles of the knife, this arrangement greatly increasing the rapidity with which the farrier trims the hoof, and enabling him to perform five times the amount of work in a given time that he has been heretofore able to accomplish.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of my improved farriers tool will be readily understood without requiring further explanation. It will be seen that my improved tool is simple in construction, and that by its use five times the amount of work may be accomplished in a given time and in a better manner than has heretofore been possible.
Having thus described myinvention, whatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination of the blade having a cutting edge formed on each side, and provided at one end with the stationary handle, and the cylindrical handle centrally pivoted to the opposite end of the said blade, in the manner and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. The combination, with the blade having the cutting-edge formed on each side, and provided at one end with the stationary handle, of the cylindrical handle having the projections formed integral therewitl1,and centrally pivoted to the opposite end of the said blade, in the manner and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JEAN BERNADAO.
