AGITATOR POR WASHING MACHINES.
No. 326,830. Patented Sept. 22, 1885.
WMA
AMOI-nem UNITED- STATES PATENT @rrr-Cn.
RANSOM G. BALDWIN, OF SKALOOSA, IOWA.
AGITATOR FOR WASHING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 326,830, dated September 22, 1335.
Application filed February 10, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, RANsoM G. BALDWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oskaloosa, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Agitators for Vashing- Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making apart of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of my improved agitator; Fig. 2, a transverse section thereof; Fig. 3, a detail view, in perspective, of the clamping -head; Fig. 4, a similar View of the clamping-disk, Fig. 5, a detailperspeetive view of one of the sockets and arm for attaching thereto the agitator-peg; Fig. 6, a detail view showing the manner ofplacing the socket-arm on the clamping-head, and Fig. 7 a detail view ofthe hollow cylindrical wedge for securing the wooden agitator-peg in the socket.
The present invention has relation to certain newand useful improvements in the construction of agitators for washing-machines, and the object thereof is to provide a simple and effective means for securing the arms which carry the agitator-pegs to a clamping device upon the usual vertical shaft; and the invention consists in the details of construction, substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the usual vertical shaft, to which motion is imparted by the ordinary driving gearwheel engaging with the teeth of' a pinion, a, upon the end of said shaft. To this shaft at the lower end thereof is suitably keyed a clamping-head, B, cast upon its under side, with a series of lugs, b, arranged upon a circle, the ends thereof being beveled in opposite directions to form a dovetail space, c, between them.
The lugs b may be of any desired number, so that four, six, or more arms, (l, may be used, which are held between the lugs, as hereinafter described, thereby enabling the number of agitator-pegs D to be increased or diminished as circumstances require.
The arms C and sockets E are east together, the upper side of each arm having a dovetail rib, e, in form to correspond with the dovetail spaces c, and the outer extremity of these ribs terminate in shoulders d, one upon each side of the rib, the face of the shoulders being convex or curved to correspond with the convex or curved inner face of the lugs b.
rlhe dovetail ribs e fit between the lugs b in the spaces c, and the shoulders d come against the inner faces of the lugs, as shown in Fig. 6.
The outer extremity of the arms C are convex, as shown atf, so as to fit nicely against the convex surface of the shaft A, thus firmly holding the end of each of the arms C between the lugs and shaft.
A clamping -disk, F, fits over the end of the shaft A, and is drawn tightly against the under side of the arms C by a nut, g, engaging with the screw -threaded end of the shaft.
The interior ot' the sockets E arc formed slightly tapering upon their interior, and after the ends of the wooden pegs are inserted in the sockets they are firmly secured therein by wedges G, which expand the ends of the peg uniformly against theinterior of the sockets, and firmly compress the fibers ofthe wood between the interior face of the socket and wedge.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In an agitator for washing machines, the combination, with a clamping-head having upon its under side a series of lugs arranged on a circle, of sockets carrying the agitator-pegs, and cast with arms having ribs to t in between the lugs and shoulders upon each side thereof to bear against the inner face of the lugs, and a clamping-disk to hold the ends of the arms in engagement with the lugs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two Witnesses.
RANSOM G. BALDWIN.
