Description

(N0 Model.)
J. T. HYNDMAN.
METALLIC SHINGLE.
No. 326,655. Patented Sept. 22, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN T. HYNDMAN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO WM. G. HYND- MAN AND ROBERT J. HYNDMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,655, dated September 22, 1885.
Appllt'atiun filed July 16, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I JOHN T. HYNDMAN, a citizen of the United States residing at Gincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in MetallicShingles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view showing the manner of connecting the shingles together; Fig. 2, a perspective view of one of the shingles, and Fig. 3 a sectional View thereof taken online mm of Fig. 2.
The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvementsin metallic roofing-shingles; and the object theieof is to so construct the shingles as to enable them to be quickly and securely connected together.
The invention therefore consists in forming a scroll or coil along theshingle,at or near the center thereof, ofsu ch shape that when sprung over the scroll or coil of the shingle below it will by its tendency to contract firmly embrace and clamp itself around the underscroll or coil, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A repre sents the shingle constructed of sheet metal and of any style and shape as found desirable.
The shingle A is formed with acentral scroll or coil, a, which is greater than a semicircle in cross-section, as shown in Fig. 3, thus rendering it necessary to expand when engaging with the scroll or coil of the shingle below it, and the natural tendency to contract in re gaining its normal shape will of itself firmly embrace and clamp the shingle to the one below it, thus enabling the entire number of shingles on a roof or other structure to be effectually secured together. the body of the shingles being secured to the roof by nailing. One end of the scroll or coil a may be made a little larger, so as to be more easily slipped over the scroll or coil of the adjacent shingle, thus completely covering the nail-heads of the shingle below it.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A metallic roofing-shingle formed with a scroll or coil of asize greater than asemicircle, whereby it will act as a springclamp upon the scroll or coil of the shingle below it to fasten itself thereto, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN T. HYNDMAN.
