(Cl. 106-160) This invention comprises a new and improved asphalt composition for sizing paper stock and includes within its scope a novel process of producing the sizing.
Heretofore in preparing sizing for paper stock, surfacing for highway construction and other uses the employment of relatively hard asphalt as a raw material has been required, that is to say, asphalt having a ring and ball test of above 17-0. All attempts to use softer asphalt have been unsuccessful because it has been impossible to grind useful mixtures of soft asphalt or to produce a composit-ion thereof which will not block or solidify in storage and transportation.
The present invention is based upon my discovery of the unexpected and unforseeable properties of a specific anthracite when ground and mixed with a soft asphalt. The specific anthracite is found so far as I know in only one vein in .the State of Pennsylvania. It has the following formula, viz.:

Specific gravity (real) 1.460
For convenience I shall refer to this specific anthracite in its ground or powdered form as Congolite.
When this specific anthracite or Congolite in ground form is mixed in the proper proportions with a soft asphalt it has the remarkable and unpredictable property of adapting the soft asphalt for grinding by rendering it friable so that the mixture may be ground without blocking in the mass or of clogging the grinding mill.
The addition of this Congolite anthracite moreover has the further unexpected effect of producing a mixture which is stronger, tougher and more friable than the original straight asphalt used in the mixture. The ball and ring viscosity test is found to have increased by 45-60".
One important use of asphalt is in sizing for paper stock. The present invention renders it possible to produce a satisfactory sizing from low melt asphalt that will fiux at the usual spreading and drying temperatures employed in the paper-making industry. \Heretofore sizings of high melt asphalts have been unsatisfactory because their fluxing temperature has been substantially above that in commercial use for spreading and sizing.
Another important use for asphalt is in the surfacing of highways. Heretofore low melt asphalt has been considered unsatisfactory for that purpose because of its relatively low softening point. By mixing my Congolite anthracite with low melt asphalt an asphalt mixture is formed that is sufficiently hard to serve as an excellent highway surfacing and at a substantially lower cost than surfacing having a component of high melt asphalt.
Starting with a low melt asphalt of 160 ring test viscosity and adding my specific Congolite anthracite in increasing amounts the result-s are substantially as follows:

To 98.5%, through 325 mesh.
At such degrees of fineness Congolite is almost incomlbusti ble.
The Congolite and low melt asphalt are ground together and when applied as a sizing agent the asphalt fluxes at normal conditions with the sizing much improved over that of a high melt asphalt size under the same conditions.
When Congolite and asphalt are fluxed together (50 50) and cooled, the mixture is much stronger and friable and tougher than that of the straight asphalt. -At 70% Congolite the softening point of the mixture becomes too high for purposes of this invention.
With this in mind, a dry asphalt size for paper stock using Congolite, 170 melting point asphalt, ground linseed meal, and rosin size is as follows:
Percent Congolite 45 A 170 M.P. asphalt 46% Linseed meal 7 /2 Dry rosin size 1 These were mortared and pestled until a fine grind was apparent. Sizing results were better than that of any high melt asphalt ground size.
Another satisfactory sizing formula for paper stock comprises:
Percent Congolite 20 Portland cement 9 Linseed meal 20 170 MJP. asphalt 50 Rosin 1 Percent Moisture .45 Volatile matter 9.00 Fixed carbon 79.6 Ash 11.4

2. The process of making a sizing for paper stock, which consists in mixing and grinding 90-31% of asphalt of approximately 160-170 ring and ball test as specified in claim 1, with about 20% powdered asphalt of the following formula:

THE PROCESS FOR MAKING A SIZING FOR PAPER STOCK WHICH CONSISTS OF MIXING 90-31% OF ASPPHALT OF APPROXIMATELY 160-170 RING AND BALL TEST WITH ABOUT 10-69% LINSEED METAL AND PROWERED ANTHRACITE OF THE FOLLOWING FORMULA PERCENT MOISTURE .45 VOLATILE MATTER 9.00 FIXED CARBON 79.6 ASH 11.4 AND THEN GRIDING THE MIXTURE THUS PREPARED THEREBY
