This invention relates to a trash bag holder and is a continuation-in-part of application Serial No. 219,480, led August 27, 1962, now U.S. Patent No. 3,132,794 and application Serial No. 284,696 tiled May 3l, 1963, now U.S. Patent No. 3,218,014.

An object of this invention is to provide a trash and/ or garbage bag holder wherein, in one form, the bag is completely protected from both the Weather and from animals, such as dogs and cats, when it is located out of doors, and in the other form, is completely protected from animals.

A further object of this invention is to provide a bag holder wherein the holder is stable, and not easily overturned, and which may be rectangular in horizontal cross section.

A further object of this invention is to provide a trash bag holder wherein the bag is held in upright open position, with an easily openable cover at the top, providing for easy top loading of the bag, yet wherein the holder may be opened at one side permitting easy removal of the bag, so that it may be easily folded over and closed at the open top before it is carried away for disposal.

A further object of this invention is to provide an improved trash bag holder that may be made in any suitable size or shape.

A further object of this invention is to provide an improved combination bag holder and culed bag which will hold the bag open in conveniently usable position7 and from which the bag may be easily removed and closed when filled for convenient disposal.

A further object of this invention is to provide a combination holder and bag with a convenient cover which keeps the bag covered to keep in odors and keep out flies or insects, which cover permits the bag to be lled from time to time, and then permits it to be readily removed for easy disposal.

A further object of this invention is to provide a combination bag holder and disposable bag, wherein the holder has a convenient cover on a top loading mouth for the bag, which clamps the bag in open position about its top, yet which, when the bag is filled, has a side opening through which the bag may be readily removed, closed, and then disposed of.

Still a further object of this invention is to provide a combination bag and bag holder wherein the holder secures the bag in upright, open position for receiving the contents to be deposited therein, and wherein the holder is of greater area as it approaches the bottom, whereby the bag will therefore not wedge therein even though its lower part may tend to bulge somewhat as the trash, garbage or other contents are dropped or packed therein, the holder having a side opening through which the lled bag may be easily removed without the necessity of -removing the bulging bottom of the filled bag through the open top of the holder.

In brief, this invention includes a cuffed bag and a holder within lwhich a cutfed bag is placed with its cuit removably clamped over the top edges of the holder, to hold the bag in open position, the bag being provided with a cover pivotally hinged to close over the cuffed open top of the bag. In addition, the holder is provided with a door opening in one side, through which the bag, after being unclamped from the top end may be readily removed. To facilitate removal of the bag, the bottom of the holder is progressively larger than the upper parts,

so that, the bag will easily remove therefrom, even though 1ts bottom may become somewhat bulged from the load placed therein.

With the above and related objects in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of parts, as will be more fully understood from the following description, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which:

There is shown at 10 one form of the bag holder of this invention. This holder 10 includes an open horizontally extending frame 12 fixed to or forming the top open end of a cabinet 14 having its bottom floor 16 supported on legs 18. In this form 10, the opposite sides 19 and back 2% of the cabinet 14 are made of panels, and a door opening 22 is provided in the front side 24, to which a door 26 is hinged at 27 with a cooperating latch keeper stud 28 and vertically slidable latch 30 for keeping it securely but releasably in closed position.

it will be noted that at least the front side 24 and the back 2i? are slightly larger at their bottom ends than their top ends, as apparent from FIG. l and FIG. 2, thus mak- I, ing the area of the floor 16 transversely greater than the top of the cabinet 14, thus facilitating the removal of the bag 32 through the door opening 22 after the bag 32 has been lled through the open top of the cabinet 14. Obviously, if desired, the side panels 19 may also be slightly larger at their bottom ends than their top ends.

Pivotally hinged at 31 to the rear end of the top horizontal frame 12 is an open clamping frame 34 consisting primarily of va horizontal portion 36 to fit over the top edge 38 -of the top horizontal frame 12 and a depending ange 40 to extend down over the outside of the top horizontal frame 12. The bag 32 is provided with a cuff 42 which is placed over the horizontal frame top edge 38 when the bag is placed into the cabinet 14, :and when the clamping frame 34 is pivoted down to clamping position, it clamps the bag cuff 42 down against the horizontal top frame edge 38 and thus holds the bag 32 firmly in open position to receive trash or other contents through the open top. In addition, the clamping frame 34 may be provided with an inner inwardly haring ange funnel 44 which serves to direct the trash or other material toward the center of the bag 32 and away from contact with its sides, at least adjacent the top.

inasmuch as trash bags are not usually filled at a sing-le operation, but have their contents added to from time to time until they are completely filled, a cover 46 is hinged over the clamping frame 34 and thus over the bag 32, preferably on the same hinge pivot 31.

The oover 46 has an outer depending ilange 48 that extends down over the outside flange 40 of clamping frame 34. The cabinet 14 may be made of metal panels secured together by bolts Sti, thus facilitating its manufacture and assembly, the clamping frame 34 and cover 46 being of the same material. Obviously, any suitable material may be substituted, depending on the location where it is to be used. Suitable hard, high impact resistant plastic panels could, of course, be used. With such materials, this Cabinet 14 is weatherproof, keeping rain olf of the bag 32. Also, it is animalproof, preventing animals such as dogs or cats from gaining access to the contents, which may be garbage as well as trash.

Inasmuch as the bags 32 now are made of sufciently wet strength paper to -contain wet garbage and resist the rain, a less expensive form of cabinet 60 is provided in FIGS. 6, 7 and 8. In this form, the cabinet 60 is made of a plurality of parts of complementary angle irons 62 and 64 between which is secured, as by bol-ts 66, screen wire, hardware cloth, expanded metal, Ior other suitable foraminous material 67 which is animalproof although not weatherproof. A hook 68 is provided for cooperating with a keeper stud 70 to keep the door closed. A cover handle knob 72 is shown on the cover 46 in FIG. 7, and may also be provided on the cover of the cabinet 14.

In operati-on, the opened bag is placed within the cabinet 14 or 60 through either the door opening or through the top with the clamping frame 34 and cover 46 in fully opened position. The bag cuif 42 is placed over the top edge 38 of the top horizontal frame 12, and clamped thereon by closing down the clamping frame 34. The cover 46 is opened as necessary to fill the bag 32 from time to time, being kept closed between periodic lling of the bag, to thus seal in any vapor or odors, and also keep out ilies and insects. When the bag 32 is filled to the desired amount and the cover and clamp are both lifted to release the bag cuiic 42, whereupon the door 26 is opened, the bag top is closed and the bag 32 is removed through the door opening for suitable disposal. The cabinets may be made of any suitable size, with the bag made of an appropriate size. When used for trash collection and disposal, the cabinets and bags are made of a size that will hold somewhat more than the conventional trash can.

The fact that the bag, when filled, tends to bulge more at the bottom than at the top does not interfere With the ready removal of the filled bag through the door opening, because of the fact that the door opening is wider at the bottom than at its top.

When the lled bag is removed a fresh, disposable bag is installed, ready to receive more trash. The bag is disposed of along with its contents, and is not normally intended for reuse. Even when filled, and holding more 'than the conventional trash can, it is still much lighter than a filled trash or garbage can, and hence, may be more easily carried for disposal purposes.

Although this invention has been described in considerable detail, such description is intended as being illustrative rather than limiting, since the invention may be variously embodied, and the scope of the invention is to be determined as claimed.

Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature of this invention, what is claimed is:

1. A holder for holding the open top of a cuifed bag in open contents-receiving position, said holder comprising an open top closed sided container member, said container member providing an open top mouth, and an open clamping frame pivotally mounted on said mouth to pivot over said mouth to mouth-encompassing position, in combination with a disposable bag closed at its bottom and open at its top, a cuif on the open top edges of said bag, said cuff extending over the top edges of said mouth and down the outer sides thereof and adapted to be secured thereto by said clamping frame being pivoted to mouth-encompassing position, and a bag closure member pivotally mounted on said open top closed sided container member for movement between an open top cuffed bag covering and uncovering position.

A holder for holding the open top of a cuffed bag in open contents-receiving position, said holder comprising an open top container member, said container comprising a bottom member and upwardly extending Wall means supported thereon, said wall means providing an open top mouth thereon, and an open cuied bag clamping frame pivotally mounted on said mouth to pivot over said mouth to mouth-encompassing position, said container and said clamping frame being rectangular in horizontal cross section, said wall means comprising four walls, at least two opposite of said walls diverging toward said bottom member.

3. The holder of claim 2, and a door hinged in one of said diverging walls.

4. The holder of claim 2, said walls comprising panel members.

5. The holder of lclaim 2, said walls comprising foraminous members.

6. A holder for holding the open top of a cutfed bag in open contents-receiving position, said holder comprissing a rectangular bottom floor member, upwardly extending side Walls on said bottom oor member providing an open top mouth, an open rectangular clamping frame hinged thereto for movement to and from a mouthencompassing position, and a cover hinged thereto for movement to and from a mouth-closing position.

7. The holder of claim 6, and a door hinged over an opening in one side wall.

8. The holder of claim 7, at least two of said side walls slanting slightly inwardly from said bottom floor member toward said open top mouth.

9. The holder of claim 8, in combination with a disposable bag closed Iat its bottom to rest on said iioor bottom and open at its top, a culf on the open top edge of said bag extending over the top edges of said mouth and down the outer sides thereof and releasably secured thereto by said clamping frame.

A HOLDER FOR HOLDING THE OPEN TOP OF A CUFFED BAG IN OPEN CONTENTS-RECEIVING POSITION, SAID HOLDER COMPRISSING A RECTANGULAR BOTTOM FLOOR MEMBER, UPWARDLY EXTENDING SIDE WALLS ON SAID BOTTOM FLOOR MEMBER PROVIDING AN OPEN TOP MOUTH, AN OPEN RECTANGULAR CLAMPING FRAME HINGED THERETO FOR MOVEMENT TO AND FROM A MOUTHENCOMPASSING POSITION, AND A COVER HINGED THERETO FOR MOVEMENT TO AND FROM A MOUTH-CLOSING POSITION.
