VELOCIPEDE.
SPECIFIQAI'ION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,823, dated September 8 1885. Application filed February 12, 1885. (No model.) 7 l To all whom, it may concern:
ing of velocipedes-such as tricycles, quadricycles, &c.-either forrailways or ordinary The invention consists in arrangements and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to -the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference-indicate. corresponding parts in all the'figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View of my improved velocipede. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side view of the ratchet on a belt-pulley. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the swinging ends of the footlevers. Fig. 5 is a rear end view of the steering-wheel and part of the frame.
The two driving wheels A are rigidly mounted on the ends of axle B,and adjacent to the inner end of the hub of each wheel the end of a side shank of a U-shaped frame, 0, is hung, which frame G has an upwardly-proj ecting part, D, in its rear cross-piece, into the top of which part D a pin, F, passes from the top of a fork, F, in which the rear steeringwheel, G, is journaled, the part D being of sufficient width to permit the steering-wheel G to turn.
A fork, H, projects toward the front from the lower ends of-the fork F, and a pin or pivot, H, on the front end of the fork H passes loosely through a block, J, arranged to slide on a transverse bar, K, uniting the side pieces of the frame 0.
The ends of a wire, L, are secured, to the sides of the block J. The wire is passed over pulleys J at the ends ofthe bar K and over pulleys on the ends of a cross-bar, M, held above the axle on standards M on the upper or front ends of the side bars of the frame 0.
A ball or other handle, N, is secured on the wire L in front of the bar M. On the axleB a double ratchet-wheel, 0,is rigidly, rnounted that is, a wheel with two ratchet-rings-and adjacent to each side of the ratchet-wheel a disk or pulley, 1?, is loosely mounted on the shaft or axle B. .On the inner side of each pulley or disk Pa sliding bolt, Q, is arranged, the inner beveled end of which is pressed upon the corresponding ring of ratchet-teeth by a spring, Q; or, in place of the said bolt, any other springfpawl may be provided. I a
Ateach side of the part D afoot-lever, R, is pivoted on the rear, cross-piece of the frame 0 to swing vertically, -the points or swinging ends of the said levers being below the axle or shaft B. One lever, B, is provided at its front or swinging end'with the two prongs r r, and the other with the prong r adj usted to pass between the prongs r 1".
Over each disk or pulley P, which is grooved, a metal band or belt, S, is passed, which is secured at the middle of its length to the rim of its pulley P. V.
he front end ofone band 'S-that is, the end of the part extending down in front of the axle-is secured on theprong r of one lever B,
and the other end, or the rear part of the band extending down behind the axle, is secured to the prong r of the other lever B. The
other .band S has one endsecured to. the
prong r of one lever B, and the other end to the prong r of the other lever B, as shown in Fig. 4. Abrake-block, T,is held by a spring, U, above the rim of one wheel A, the said spring U being secured on onestandard M.
In place of the brake shown,- a brake-lever pivoted on one standard M, or any other brake, may be used.
For use on railways flanged wheels are used, and in place of the steering-wheel two rear wheelsare used.
The-above-describcd driving mechanism can be used for operating'lathes or other machinery or for other purposes. 9
The operation is as follows: The operator PATENT OFFIC places his feet onthe treadles or foot-levers R and depresses them alternately. When a lever is pressed down, the front part of a band, S, is pulled down and turns the corresponding disk or pulley, I, in the direction of the arrow IOO a, and as the bolt or pawl Q is engaged with i 7 and two foot-levers,
the ratchet-wheel O the said ratchet-wheel and the axle are revolved in the direction of the arrow a. At the same time the rear part of the said belt raises the other lever B, with which it is connected. The bolt Qor pawl of one pulley 1? turns the ratchet-wheel,and at the sametime the opposite teeth of the ratchetwheel slide under the bolt or pawl on the other pulley P. Then the bolt or pawl of the latter pulley revolves the aXle, and then the bolt or pawl ofthe first-mentioned pulley revolves the axle, and so on.
To steer the velocipcde, the ball N is shifted to the right or left, whereby the steeringwheel is turned.
To apply the brake, the bandis placed on the block T and the said block pressed upon the rim of the wheel.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with ashaft, of a ratchet wheel mounted rigidly on the same, pulleys mounted loosely on'the shaft and having pa-Wls or boltsfor engagement with the teeth of the ratchet-wheel, bands secured on each pulley,
each of the above-described bands having one end secured on the free end of each foot-lever, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with a shaft, of the O, the pulleys P, having the bands S, secured on the double ratchet-wheel bolts Q or pawls,
rims of the pulleys, and the foot-levers R, of which one has the prongs r r and the other the prong T the bands S each having one end secured to the prong T and the other end to the prong r or r, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a velocipede, the combination, with the driving wheels and a frame hung on the axle, of a steering-wheel journaled in a fork pivoted in the rear cross-piece of the frame, a block running on a cross-piece of the frame and connected with the fork of the steering wheel, and ,a wire connected with the said sliding piece and running along a bar above the axle, which wire has a ball or handle piece, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. In a velocipede, the combination, with the driving-wheels and a frame hung on the axle, and having a raised part, D, on its rear cross-piece, of the fork F, pivoted on the part D, the wheel G in the fork F, the fork H, the cross-bar K, the sliding block J on the same, the pin H, projecting from the fork H through the block J, and the wire L, secured to the block Jand passed in front ofa bar above the axle, substantially as herein shown and described.
