WATER FILTER.
No. 325,681. Patented Sept. 8, 1885.'

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEicE.
OSMUN D S. LINDON, OF SAN. FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
WATER- F1 LTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part; of Letters Patent No. 325,683.` dated September 8, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it 11i/ay concern.-
Beit known that I, OsMUND S. LINDoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Vater Filter, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to that class of filters which are attached to the ordinary faucet. It will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a faucet, showing the attachment of my improved iilter. The filter and the spout of the faucet are shown by a section cut vertically through the center. Fig. 2 is a cross-section cut through the dotted lines a a. Fig. 3 is a cross-section cut through the dotted lines b b. Fig. 4 is a crosssection cut through the dotted lines c c. Fig. 5 is a cross-section cut through the dotted lines l d. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the outside case detached from the other parts, and Fig. 7 is a perspective View of the iilterchamber.
I form the outer'case of thin tubing of strong springy metal, around which I turn a slight groove near the upper end, to receive the setring D and the crescent clamp E. I also slot the upper end, as shown in Fig. 6, to allow the top to be sprung in and clamp irmly upon the packing B. I form the filter-chamber to t easily in the outer case, C, and the spout II, I screw ont-o the bottom or lower end of the case C, as shown in Fig. 1. I form the straining-spaces .I and K and the middle iilterchamber, l?, by means of the gauze or strainer sheets N, M, L, and O. rI he chambers .I and K, I iill with sponge or other porous material, and the middle chamber, P, I till with coarsely-pulverized charcoal.
In attaching the spoutS of the faucet I place the rubber ring-packing B between the outer case, C, and the spout S. I then place the outer clamp-ring, D, in the groove R, where it ts to about half the circumference of the case C, and by its oval shape it extends back sufciently to admit the crescent clamp E, which also fits to the opposite half of the groove It, and the Setscrew F, being operated,
compresses the top of the outer case, C, and the slots in the same allow it to be set rnily upon the packing B, thus making a perfect t to the spout S. I then insert the filter-chamber G and screw the spout H on to hold it in position.
The lter-chamber G may be readily reversed by taking out and turning end for end and replacing.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
l. The herein-described filter comprising the chamber G, with end strainer-chambers and the central lter-chamber, I?, the outer case, C, having the grooves and slittedends, the clamping-ring D, the crescent-shaped clamping-ring, and the set-screw adapted to bear against the same, substantially as set forth.
2. In water-filters, the clamping-ring D and crescent clamp E, in combination with the grooved and slotted end of the outer case, C, and the packing B, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
OSMUN D S. LINDON.
