(Cl. 227-160) This invention has to do with a fabricating apparatus and is more particularly concerned with an apparatus for fabricating wooden door frames.
In the past, it has been common practice during construction of dwelling houses and the like to establish roughed-in door openings in wall and partition structures and to build and fabricate a finish wooden frame structure in such openings to mount and accommodate a door closure.
The ordinary door frame includes a pair of elongate, laterally spaced vertical jambs arranged adjacent to and extending longitudinally of the vertical edges of the wall structure defining the door opening with which they are related, a horizontally disposed top jamb arranged to occur adjacent the top edge of the wall structure defining the door opening and extending between and secured to the upper ends of the vertical .jambs. The ordinary frame further includes longitudinally extending stops fixed to and projecting laterally inwardly from the j ambs 'to engage and stop a door hung in the frame, and a pair of elongate flange-like casings secured to the inner and outer edges of the jambs to project laterally outwardly therefrom and to slideably engage and overlie the inside and outside surfaces of the wall, about the opening. The upper ends of the vertical jambs join and are fixed to the adjacent, related ends of the top jamb in a suitable or desired manner, while the adjacent ends of the several stops and casings carried by the jambs are mitered so that when the jambs are assembled in the door opening with which they are related, a neat finished frame is provided.
In the past, door frames werecustom built, on the jobsite, for every door opening. Due to the increased cost of skilled labor, the art has abandoned the above practice and now purchases prefabricated door frame components from mills or cabinet shops, which components can be easily and quickly arranged and fixed in a roughed-in door opening with the exercise of ordinary skill and the expenditure of little time.
These prefabricated door frame components consist of the several separate jambs with their related stops and casings fixed thereto. The upper ends of the vertical jambs and the opposite ends of the top jamb are formed or otherwise prepared to easily and conveniently establish the desired connection therebetween and the related ends of the stops and casings are mitcred to establish the desired, finished assembly.
In essence, these components are in the nature of preformed, wooden channels, which are such that they can be arranged in a roughed-in door opening, in sliding and bracing relationship with the adjacent portions of the wall defining the opening.
To date, these preassembled subassernblies have been mass produced in shops by semi-skilled labor, with the use of jigs, fixtures and other mechanical aids. The result of this practice has saved many manhours of labor and has resulted in a material economic saving.
Vhile the art has brought about material savings by following the above noted procedure, a further and more substantial savings and a superior product or end result can be realized by employing an apparatus, as provided by the present invention, which will rapidly and automatically assemble and'fix the several components of each subassembly in an accurate and uniform manner.
An object of this invention is to provide a novel appa- 3,252,542 Patented May 24, 1966 ratus for rapidly, automatically and uniformly assembling and fixing the stops and casings of a door frame t their related door jamb.
Another object of this invention is to provide an apparatus of the character referred to wherein, suitably .prepared and finished jambs, stops and casings are fed into the apparatus and are subsequently automatically fixed together in predetermined fixed relationship.
It is an object of this invention to provide an apparatus having carrier means to initially, freely receive the jambs, stops and casings, to engage and shift the said parts into proper relative longitudinal relationship and to advance and transfer the parts thus arranged, longitudinally.
Still another object of this invention is to provide means for urging and holding the several parts in proper alignment and in tight predetermined relationship with each other and means to thereafter fasten the parts, thus assembled, together.
A further object of my invention is to provide a dis charge means for engaging and urging the finished prod not from engagement in the apparatus.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus of the character referred to which is such that it can be easily and conveniently adjusted to produce door frame components of the character referred to of any desired standard size.
Still another object of my invention is to provide an apparatus of the character referred to which is simple and economic to build, operate and maintain and an apparatus which is highly effective and dependable in operation.
The various objects and features of my invention will be fully understood from the following detailed description of a typical preferred form and carrying out of my invention throughout which description reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which:

The apparatus that I provide is adapted to receive parts of a door frame structure and to arrange said parts in predetermined relationship and to thereafter secure or fasten the said parts in fixed relationship with each other.
In FIGURES 1 and 18 of the drawings, I have illustrated a typical door frame construction B, which construction includes a pair of laterally spaced, elongate,
vertical jambs 1t and an elongate horizontally disposed top jamb 10. The several jambs have flat outer and inner surfaces 11 and 12 and straight inside and outside edges 13 and 14. The vertical jambs occur along the opposite vertical edges of a rectangular door opening in a wall structure W, to extend between a related floor F and the top edge of said opening. The top jamb extends along the top edge of said opening and is joined to the upper ends of the vertical jambs, at its opposite ends. The adjacent ends of the vertical and top jambs are coupled or secured together in one of several suitable manners. Since the exact manner in which these parts are secured or joined together can be varied widely in practice and does not affect the novelty of this invention, and so as not to unduly burden this disclosure, I have not illustrated this detail of the frame structure B.
In addition to the jambs and 10', the frame construe tion includes elongate stops 15, rectangular in cross-section, fixed to the outer surfaces 11 of the jambs along lines spaced predetermined distances between the side edges of the jambs and coextensive therewith. The upper ends of the stops on the vertical jambs are mitered as at 15 (see FIGURE 18) in cooperatively meet with the related ends of the stop on the top jamb, which is alsov mitered.
The frame further includes a pair of elongate casings 17 having flat inside and outside surfaces 18 and 19 and straight upper and lower edges 20 and 21. The plates 17 are arranged with their inner edge portions adjacent the side edges 13 and 14 of the jambs to which they are related so as to project laterallyoutwardly therefrom, and are secured to the jambs in predetermined fixed relationship therewith and as illustrated in FIGURE 18 of the drawings.
The upper ends of the casings 17 related to the vertical jambs are mitered, as at 22, to mate with the related ends of the casings on the top jamb, which are similarly mitered.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that the door frame B is made up of two elongate vertically extending, outwardly and oppositely disposed, fabricated channel sections, with inwardly projecting longitudinal stops and an elongate horizontally extendingupwardly and outwardly opening fabricated channel section with a similar longitudinal stop, joined with and. extending between the upper ends of the vertical sections.
The several sections of the door frame construction occur adjacent and embrace the edge portions of a wall structure defining a door wall opening and have portions mitered so as to establish a neat and attractive installation.
In practice, the several sections or components made up of the jambs and related stops and casings are secured in fixed position in the door opening by means of suitable fasteners (not shown) engaged through the jambs and the casings and into the wall structure.
The apparatus A that I provide is adapted to receive the component parts, that is, the jamb, stop and casings of each section of a door frame, which parts are suitably mitered or otherwise finished, and to first orient the parts in proper longitudinal spaced relationship, then urge and hold said parts in proper, predetermined lateral and vertical position, then secure or fix the partstogether and finally discharge said assembled parts or units for subsequent assembly with other related units in a wall structure, to define a door opening therein.
The apparatus A includes a carrier means C adapted to receive and support the parts to be assembled, advancing means D to position the parts longitudinally and to advance said parts longitudinally of the apparatus, vertical pressure exerting and orienting means E to act upon the parts to hold them fiat and in proper relative vertical position with each other, lateral pressure exerting and orienting means F to hold the parts in lateral alignment and the casings in pressure engagement on the jambs, guide means G to position the stops in proper lateral position and tight upon the jambs, fastening means H to secure the several parts together and extracting means to draw and discharge the finished units or sections from the apparatus.
The carrier means C, which functions to receive and support the parts tov be assembled, includes an elongate horizontally disposed Way having front and rear ends 25' and 25". The way 25 comprises two elongate longitudinally extending angle iron stringers 26 having a flat horizontally disposed base flanges 27 and a fiat upwardly projecting, longitudinal side flanges 28. The stringers 26 are arranged in lateral spaced parallel relationship, with their base flanges projecting laterally outwardly from the opposite sides of the assembly.
The stringers 26 are secured together, in fixed spaced relationship, by a plurality of longitudinally spaced tie bars 29, extending between the flanges 28 and fixed thereto by welding (see FIGURE 5 The assembled stringers are supported in spaced relationship above a floor or other suitable supporting surface by means of a suitable leg support 30, at the forward end portion of the way and by a suitable frame 31 at the rear end portion thereof.
The way further includes a pair of laterally spaced, longitudinally disposed, rails 32 which rails occur in lateral spaced relationship, laterally outward of the flanges 28 and above the flanges 27, as clearly illustrated in FIGURE 5 of the drawings.
The rails 32 are adapted to carry and support the work and are shown as being established of box sections and as defining fiat upwardly disposed jamb supporting surfaces 33 and fiat laterally outwardly disposed casing supporting surfaces 34.
The rails are supported in predetermined spaced relationship by means of a plurality of longitudinally spaced adjustable support means 35 carried by the stringers 26. Each means 35 is shown as including a pair of axially aligned pillow blocks'36 fixed to the lower sides or surfaces of the flanges 27, a shaft 37 engaged through and rotatably carried by the pillow blocks to extend therebetween. The shaft has end portions projecting laterally outwardly from the blocks. The central portion of the shaft carries a suitable manually engageable turning wheel 38. The opposite ends of the shaft are threaded, oppositely and are threadedly engaged in and through carrier blocks 39, which blocks are fixed to the rails by suitable mounting straps 40. The straps 40 are provided to support the rails 32 laterally inward of their related blocks 39 and above the flanges 27.
With the means 35 set forth above, it will be apparent that the rails 32 are suitably supported and further, that the lateral spacing of the rails can be easily and conveniently varied and adjusted to support and cooperatively receive jambs of different sizes or width.
The means 35 further includes adjustable casing support means to hold and support the casings of the door frame units in proper vertical relationship relative to the rails and the jambs supported thereby. The casing support means includes carrier plates 41 fixed to and project-- ing upwardly from the blocks 39 and/ or the straps 40, in lateral spaced relationship from their related rails. The casings 41 are provided with vertical fastener receiving slots 42. A support plate 43 having a laterally inwardly projecting support flange 44 is arranged adjacent the inner surface of each carrier plate 41. The plates 43 carry project through the openings 42 and on which suitable clamp or lock nuts 46 are engaged.
With the above relationship of parts, it will be apparent that the horizontally disposed support flanges 44 occur adjacent the flat supporting surfaces 34 of their related rails and are adjustable vertically relative thereto.
If necessary or desired, depending upon the longitudinal extent of the way 25 and the number of means 35 that are provided, casing support means, similar to the means described above can be provided at spaced intervals along the rails, separate or independent of the adjustable rail support means.
When the construction is in use, the jambs are disposed horizontally with their outer surfaces 11 disposed upwardly and are engaged on the rails to be supported thereby. The outer surfaces 34 of the rails are arranged to occur in the same or common plane with the opposite side edges of the jambs.
The casings 17 are then disposed in a vertical plane with their inner edges disposed downwardly and their inner surfaces disposed laterally inwardly. When thus disposed, the casings are arranged between the rails and the plates 41 and are supported in predetermined vertical relationship to the edges of the jambs by the flanges 44.
The stop is then engaged on the top of and is supported by the jamb.
The advancing means D provided to position the jambs, casings and stops longitudinally and to advance them longitudinally along the way, includes an idler sprocket 45 at the forward end of the way, a driven sprocket 46 at the rear end of the way, an endless chain 47 engaged about and extending between the sprockets and a plurality of work engaging cleats 43 carried by the chain.
The sprockets are alike and are carried by axle members 49 rotatably supported by suitable bearings 50, which bearings are carried by mounting brackets 51 fixed to the under side of the flanges 27 of the stringers (see FIG- URES 3 and 4 of the drawings).
The sprockets occur between the stringers 26 and are of such diametric extent and are so positioned that their upper extremities and the upper portion of the chain 47 extending therebetween occur in substantially the same plane as the upper edges of the stringer flanges 28.
The axle member 49 of the driven sprocket projects laterally outwardly from one bearing relatedthereto and carries a driven pulley wheel (not shown) which wheel is engaged by a belt 52 engaged and driven by a drive pulley 53 of a motor driven reduction gear 54 carried by the frame 31. The reduction gear occurs below the way and within the frame 31 (see FIGURE 9 of the drawings).
Since the particular drive means for the drive pulley can vary widely without aifecting the novelty of the invention, I will not burden this specification with further detailed illustration and description of the means shown.
The cleats (see FIGURES 5 and 6 of the drawings) include simple flat horizontally disposed platelike bodies 55 having rearwardly disposed transversely extending jamb end engaging surfaces 56, rearwardly projecting stop end engaging tabs 57 and laterally spaced downwardly projecting plate engaging skirts 58. The skirts 58 are provided with rearwardly disposed or rearwardly opening angular notches 58' to cooperatively engage the mitered ends 22 of the casings.
The bodies 55 establish sliding engagement on the top surfaces 33 of the rails and the skirts 58 depend therefrom to occur adjacent the sides 34 of the rails 32.
In practice, the skirts are separate angle members screw fastened to the underside of the body and are such that they can be adjusted laterally or replaced by special skirts, when the lateral displacement of the rails is changed or varied.
In practice, the upper portion of the chain travels rearwardly and the cleats engage the forward ends of the parts of the work engaged on the way to first position 6 the parts longitudinally and to thereafter urge and move the work rearwardly.
The vertical pressure exerting an orienting means E provided to act upon the parts of the work, to hold them flat and in proper relative vertical position, is shown in FIGURES 9 and 10 of the drawings. The means E includes a pair of laterally spaced vertically disposed tubes 60 fixed to and projecting upwardly from the forward end of the frame 31 to occur at the opposite sides of the rear portion of the way 25, a post 61 slideably engaged in each tube to project upwardly therefrom and carrying a bearing 62, an elongate horizontally disposed axle rod 63 rotatably carried by the bearings and extend ing transversely and above the way, a pair of resilient work engaging rollers 64 carried by the rod in axially spaced relationship and spring means 65 related to the post to normally yieldingly urge the rollers 64 downwardly into pressure bearing engagement with the work and therefore to urge the work downwardly into flat engagement with the way. With this relationship of parts, it will be apparent that the means E serves to hold the jarnbs flat and remove any warp that might exist in said jambs.
The rollers 64 .are spaced apart to freely accommodate the stop 15, which stop is engaged and positioned-separately, by the means G, as will hereinafter be described.
The orienting means F provided to exert lateral pressure on and to hold the casings in alignment and in engagement with the jambs, includes a pair of horizontally disposed transversely extending and laterally spaced support rollers 65 arranged to occur at the opposite sides of the rails and to engage and support the lower edges 20 of the casings 17. The means F further includes a pair of vertically disposed laterally spaced pressure rollers 66 arranged to occur at the opposite sides of the way and to engage and hold the casings 17 in engagement on the outer surfaces 34 of the rails 32 and against the side edges of the jamb. The rollers 66 are pitched on an angle with the axes inclined rearwardly and upwardly, whereby they force the casings down onto the rollers 65 as the casings are urged thereby (see FIGURE 13).
The rollers 65 and 66 are supported by a pair of elongate laterally spaced side carriages 67 which car' riages extend longitudinally of and above the rear portion of the way. The carriages are provided with longitudinally spaced, transversely extending sleeves 68 which sleeves are slidea'bly engaged on a pair of longitudinally spaced transversely extending rods 69 on the frame 31. The rods extend transversely above the way 25. Manually engageable lock fasteners 70 are carried by the sleeves to releaseably hold the sleeves and thereby hold the carriages in fixed position on the rods.
The carriages have forward depending, longitudinally extending mounting plates 71 on which the rollers 65 are mounted and upwardly projectingtransversely extending mounting plates 72, spaced rearward of the plates 71 and on which the rollers 66 are mounted. The rollers 66 are rotatably carried on axle members 73 which members are carried by and depend from mounting blocks 74 fixed to the plates 72.
In practice, the outside surfaces 19 of the casings 17 are tapered laterally inwardly at about 5 degrees. Accordingly, the axis of the rollers 66 are, as illustrated, pitched at the same angle or the same degree so that the rollers establish flat uniform engagement on said outside surfaces of the casings.
It will be apparent that the rollers 65 and 66 serve to hold the casings 17 in proper relationship with the jambs.
It will be further apparent that the rollers can be advantageously adjusted to work on door frames of different width by lateral shifting of the carriages on their supporting rods 69.
The means G provided to position and hold the stops in proper lateral position on the jambs includes a central,
elongate, carriage 75 arranged between the side carriages 67 to extend in spaced parallel relationship therebetween. The carriage 75 like the carriages 67 are provided with sleeves or tubes 77 to engage the rods 69 and has a fiat horizontally disposed plate 78 which overlies the rear end portion of the ways and the work thereon. The tubes 77 carry lock fasteners 79 to allow lateral adjustment and locking of the carriage 75 in place.
The plate 78 is provided with or carries a pair of longitudinally spaced rollers 80, which rollers occur on vertical axes, are spaced below the plate and engage one side edge of the stop 15, as clearly illustrated in FIG- URES l1 and 14 of the drawings. The carriage 75 is further provided with a laterally inwardly and rearwardly curved, depending cam 81 at its forward end, which cam engages the other or opposite side of the stop and urges it laterally into engagement with the forward roller 80. In addition to the foregoing, the means G includes a suitable roller 82 carried by a spring loaded arm 83 which The roller 84 is shown carried by an arm 85 carried by the carriage and so that the roller can be adjusted vertically to accommodate and work upon stops of different thickness. With the means G illustrated and described above, it will be apparent that the stops are accurately positioned and held firmly in place on the jambs as the work is advanced longitudinally through the apparatus.
The fastening means H that I provide includes three like stapling guns 90, one gun being fixed to and carried by each of the carriages 67 and 75.
The carriages 67 are provided with laterally extending rearwardly disposed mounting plates 91 at their rear ends, which plates carry suitable mounting blocks 92 for the guns.
The carriage 75 is provided'with an upwardly projecting rearwardly disposed mounting plate 93 at its rear end, which plate carries a suitable mounting block 94 for the gun related to it.
In practice, the design of the guns 90 can vary widely in form or design. As a result, the design of the mounting blocks can vary widely; I
I In the case illustrated I have shown the guns 90 ashaving substantially cylindrical neck portions and have shown the mounting blocks 92 and 94 as including base sections fixed to their related mounting plates by screw fastening means and having rearwardly opening gun neck receiving seats. The mounting blocks are shown as further including clamp sections with forwardly opening gun neck receiving seats, secured to the base sections by screw fasteners. With such block constructions, it will be apparent that the guns can be advantageously positioned and held in predetermined fixed relationship to the work.
The guns 90 carried by the side carriages are arranged with their discharge ends in close proximity with and disposed towards the upper edge portions of the casings 17 that overlie the edge portions of the jambs and so that when the guns are fired, the casings are stapled and fastened in fixed position to the jambs.
The gun 90 carried by the central carriage is arranged with its discharge end in close proximity with and disposed downwardly toward the stop 15, so that when it is fired, it staples and secures the stop to the jamb in fixed relationship thereto.
In the case illustrated and in the preferred carryingout of the invention, the guns 90 are pneumatically operated stapling guns and are of the variety or type that is provided with inlet ports to receive air under pressure to charge the guns, air outlet ports and trigger operated valve means to release the charge andthereby fire or actuate the gun.
In accordance with the'present invention, the guns are modified by opening and rendering the triggeroperated valves inoperative and by the application of discharge lines that are connected with the discharge or outlet ports and with a single or common solenoid operated relief or discharge valve. The discharge valve is under control of a suitable timing mechanism or device related to the advancing means so that the several guns 90 are actuated or fired simultaneously, at desired spaced intervals, throughout the longitudinal extent of the work, as it is advanced through the construction.
In the case illustrated, the several guns 90 receive air from an accumulator 91, carried by the frame 31, through suitable delivery lines 92. The accumulator is supplied with air, under pressure, from a suitable pump (not shown).
A suitable filter means 93 is provided for the charging air.
The timing or control means, in the case illustrated, includes a normally open limit switch 96 carried by the central carriage, which switch has an operating trigger which is engaged by the arm 83 of the means G, to close the switch, when the roller 82 of the means G engages a stop and the arm is pivoted laterally outward.
A second actuating limit switch 97 is carried by the frame 31, adjacent the rear sprocket 46, and is connected in series between the solenoid operated valve and the switch 96. The sprocket carries a laterally outwardly projecting actuating pin 98, which pin engages and closes the switch 97 upon each revolution of the sprocket.
By varying the radial displacement of the pin and adjusting the position of the switch 97 accordingly, the timing can be advantageously varied or adjusted.
With the above setup, it will be apparent that the timing means is only energized when a piece of work is engaged in the confines of the carriage and the several holding and guiding means and that the guns are activated or fired to secure the parts of the work together at spaced intervals throughout its longitudinal extent as the work is advanced through the apparatus.
In practice, a suitable control panel 100 can be provided to locate and support certain of the components of the control and/ or timing means, where they can be readily observed, adjusted and maintained. It is to be understood that the timing and control means lllustrated is only one form of such means that can be employed and that in practice, any suitable means for timing and controlling the operation or actuation of the guns 90 can be employed without departing from the spirit of this invention.
The extracting means I provided by this invention is adapted to hold and support the work as it is advanced from the rear end of the way and so that the trailing end of the Work will not be biased in the apparatus. The means I also serves to advance the work rearwardly and away from the discharge end of the advacing means D and from engagement with the cleats 48.
The means I (see FIGURES 9, l5 and 16 of the drawings) includes a fiat horizontally disposed platform positioned above a horizontally disposed deck 111 at the rear end of the frame 31. The platform is coupled with the deck for free vertical shifting and against lateral shifting or rotation by means of a plurality of pins 112, fixed to and depending from the plate and engaged in and through suitable openings in the deck. A cam plate 113 having a plurality of circumferentially spaced upwardly projecting driving lobes 114 is arranged between the platform and the deck and is slideably engaged and supported on said deck. The cam plate is pivotally engaged about and centered by a shaft 115 fixed to and depending from the center of the platform and is provided with a laterally outwardly projecting operating lever 116;
The platform 110 is provided with a plurality of circumferentially spaced downwardly projecting driven lobes 117, which lobes cooperatively engage the lobes 114 in such a manner that when the plate 113 is rotated by means of the lever 116, the platform is raised or lowered, as circumstances require or as desired.
The shaft 115 depends through the deck 111 and is provided with suitable spring means 118, which means normally yieldingly urges the shaft 115 and the platform downwardly so that the lobes 117 are maintained in proper wonkng engagement with the lobes 1 14 on the camvplate.
The cam plate is provided with outwardly opening notches 119 to accommodate the pins 112. It will be apparent that the notches 119 serve as limiting means to prevent excessive rotation of the plate and resulting disengagement of the related cam lobes.
The platform 110 is provided with and carries a pair of longitudinally spaced transversely extending rollers 121 to support the work advancing rearwardly from the way 25. The rollers 121 have axle members 122 rotatably carried bysuitable hearing blocks 123 secured to the platform. The axle member of one roller carries a driven pulley wheel 124 at one end, which wheel is engaged by a belt 125 driven by and extending from the reduction gear 54. The other end of that axle member carries a drive pulley wheel 126 which is engaged by a belt 127, which belt extends to and is engaged about a driven pulley wheel 128 at the related end of the other axle member.
With this relationship of parts, it will be apparent that the rollers 121 are driven rollers and effectively draw I the work from the way and urge it rearwardly and away from the apparatus.
In addition to the foregoing, the means I includes a pressure roller 130 spaced above the rearmost roller 121 to engage and normallyyieldingly urge and hold the work down and in driving engagement on said roller 121. The roller 130 is carried by a shaft 131, the ends of which are rotatably engaged in bearings 132 at the upper ends of a pair of laterally spaced vertically disposed columns-133, which columns are slidably engaged in tubes 134 fixed to and projecting upwardly from the deck. Spring means are related to the columns 133 to normally yieldingly urge the roller downwardly relative to the roller 121 related thereto and the work. The mounting means for the roller 130 is similar to the mounting means for the rollers of the means E, illustrated in FIG- URE of the drawings. Accordingly, reference is made to said FIGURE 10 of the drawings for a clear understanding of the means employed to support the roller 130.
With the means I illustrated and described above, it will be apparent that the work is suitably discharged from the apparatus.
In practice and as illustrated in FIGURES 2 and 9 of the drawings, a suitable housing 140 is or can be provided about the frame 31 to shield the various parts and/or means related to the frame and the rear end portion of the way and to provide a neat and attractive piece of equipment.
Having described only a typical preferred form and application of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the specific details herein set forth, but wish to reserve to myself any modifications and variations that may appear to those skilled in the art and which fall within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. An apparatus of the character referred to including, an elongate horizontally disposed way having front and rear ends and defining an upwardly disposed longitudinal door jamb supporting surface and a pair of laterally spaced oppositely and outwardly disposed longitudinal casing supported surfaces, carrier means adjacent said casing supporting surfaces to support the lower edges of elongate longitudinally extending casings in predetermined vertical position and to hold said casings adjacent said surfaces, longitudinally shiftable advancing means carried by the way and engaging and shifting the casings and jambs supported on and adjacent the Way reanwardly, a vertically shiftable pressure roller extending transverse and overlying the rear portion of the way to engage and urge jambs advanced rearwardly therealong downwardly into fiat engagement on the way, laterally spaced vertically disposed rollers at the opposite sides of the way, adjacent the rear end portion thereof to engage casings advanced rear-wardly therealong into flat engagement on the way and adjacent the side edges of related jambs, a pair of laterally spaced laterally inwardly disposed staple guns rearward of the rollers and disposed toward the opposite side edges of the jambs carried by the way and the portions of casings related thereto and operable to staple the casings to the jambs; and timing means related to the advancing means and operable to automatically actuate said. staple guns at predetermined intervals as the jarnbs and casings are advanced longitudinally therebetween.
2. A structure as set forth in claim 1 wherein said way includes an elongate horizontally disposed stringer coextensive with the longitudinal extent of the way, a pair of elongate, laterally spaced, horizontally disposed rails having flat top surfaces defining the jamb supporting surface and flat outwardly disposed side surfaces defining the casing engaging surfaces, said rails being arranged at the opposite sides and extending longitudinally of the stringer, and a plurality of longitudinally spaced adjust able coupling means between the stringer and the rails to support the rails in predetermined relationship with the stringer and with each other, each of said coupling means including bearing means elongate horizontally disposed shaft rotatably carried by the bearing means to extend transversely of the way and having oppositely threaded end portions projecting laterally into close proximity to the rails, blocks having threaded apertures fixed to the rails and threadedly receiving the ends of the shaft and a manually engageable operating wheel carried by the shaft to facilitate rotating the shaft and affecting lateral shifting and adjustment of the rails relative to each other and to the stringer.
3. A structure as set forth in claim 2 including a frame adjacent the rear end portion of the way and supporting the vertically shiftable pressure roller and having a pair of longitudinally spaced, parallel, transversely extending supporting rods, a pair of elongate longitudinally extending carriages having longitudinally spaced sleeves slideably engaged on the rods and arranged to occur adjacent the opposite sides of the way, each carriage rotatably carrying the vertically disposed casing engaging roller and the stapling gun related to each side of the way, said sleeve having rod engaging locking means to secure the carriages in desired lateral position relative to the way and to each other.
4. A structure as set forth in claim'l including a frame adjacent the rear end portion of the way and supporting the vertically shiftable pressure roller and having a pair of longitudinally spaced, parallel, transversely extending supporting rods, a pair of elongate longitudinally extending carriages having longitudinally spaced sleeves slideably engaged on the rods and arranged to occur adjacent the opposite sides of the way, each carriage rotatably carrying the vertically disposed casing engaging roller and the stapling gun related to each side of the way, said sleeve having rod engaging locking means to secure the carriages in desired lateral position relative to the way and to each other.
5. A structure as set forth in claim 1 wherein said ad vancing means includes an idler sprocket at the forward end of the way, a drive sprocket at the rear end of the frame, an endless chain engaged about and extending between the sprockets, said sprockets being arranged on horizontal axes and with their upper portions substantially tangential with the jamb supporting surface of the way, a plurality of circumferentially spaced gates having casing end and jamb end engaging surfaces fixed to and carried by the chain to overlie the jamb and casing supporting surfaces; and drive means driving the drive sprocket whereby the upper portion of the chain and the cleat thereon are advanced rearwardly relative to the way.
6. A structure as set forth in claim 1 including discharge means adjacent the rear end of the frame to engage work as it is advanced from the rear end of the way and to draw the trailing end of the work from engagement with the way and the advancing means including, a vertically adjustable platform, a pair of longitudinally spaced transversely extending driven rollers carried by the platform to occur below and engage and support thelower edge of the work and an elongated vertically shiftable spring loaded roller extending transversely above one of the drive rollers to engage the top of the work and urge it into pressure driving engagement with the driven roller.
7. An apparatus of the character referred to including, an elongate horizontally disposed way having front and rear ends and defining a longitudinal upwardly disposed jamb supporting surface and a pair of laterally spaced oppositely and outwardly disposed casings supporting surfaces, carrier means adjacentthe casing supporting surfaces to support the lower edges of elongate longitudinally extending casings in predetermined vertical position and to hold said casings adjacent said surfaces, longitudinally shiftable advancing means carried by the way and engaging and shifting elongate stops engaged on and carried by the jambs rearwardly, a vertically shiftable pressure roller extending transversely over the rear portion of the way to engage and urge jambs advanced rearwardly therealong downwardly into flat engagement on the way, guide means above the rear portion of the way to engage the top and opposite sides of stops engaged on and supported by jambs to position said stops laterally relative to the jambs and hold said stops down in tight engagement on the jambs, laterally spaced vertically disposed rollers at the opposite sides of the way to engage casings advanced rearwardly therealong into flat engagement on the way and with the adjacent side edges of related jambs, a central downwardly disposed staple gun and a pair of laterally spaced inwardly disposed staple guns rearward of the guide means and the rollers and disposed towards the top of the stops and the opposite 'sides of the jambs carried by the way and the portion of the casings related to the side edges of the jambs and operable to staple the stops and the casings to the jambs; and timing means related to the advancing means and operable to automatically actuate said staple guns at predetermined intervals at the jambs, stops and casings are advanced longitudinally therebetween.
8. A structure as set forth in claim 7 including a frame adjacent the rear end portionof the way and supporting the vertically shiftable pressure roller and having a pair of longitudinally spaced, parallel, transversely extending supporting rods, an elongate longitudinally extending central carriage having longitudinally spaced sleeves engaged on the rods and airanged to occur above the way, said central carriage carrying said guide means to engage and position the stops and the central downwardly disposed stapling gun, a pair of elongate longitudinally extending side carriages having longitudinally spaced sleeves slideably engaged on the rods and arranged to occur adjacent the opposite sides of the way, each side carriage rear rotatably carrying the vertically disposed casing engaging roller and the stapling gun related to each side of the way, the sleeves of the several ways having rod engaging locking means to secure the carriages in desired lateral position relative to the way and to each other.
9. A structure as set forth in claim 7 wherein said Way includes an elongate horizontally disposed stringer coextensive with the longitudinal extent of the Way, a pair of elongate, laterally spaced, horizontally disposed rails having flat top surfaces defining the jamb supporting surface and flat outwardly disposed side surfaces defining the casing engaging surfaces, said rails being arranged at the opposite sides and extending longitudinally of the stringer, and a plurality of longitudinally spaced adjustable coupling means between the stringer and the rails to support the rails in predetermined relationship with the stringer and with each other, each of said coupling means including bearing means elongate horizontally disposed shaft rotatably carried by the bearing means to extend transversely of the way and having oppositely threaded end portions projecting laterally into close proximity to the rails, blocks having threaded apertures fixed to the rails and threadedly receiving the ends of the shaft and a manually engageable operating wheel carried by the shaft to facilitate rotating the shaft and affecting lateral shifting and adjustment of the rails relative to each other and to the stringer.
10. A structure as set forth in claim 9 including a frame adjacent the rear end portion of the way and supporting the vertically shiftable pressure roller and having a pair of longitudinally spaced, parallel, transversely extending supporting rods, an elongate longitudinally extending central carriage having longitudinally spaced sleeves engaged on the rods and arranged to occur above the way, said central carriage carrying said guide means to engage and position the stops and the central down wardly disposed stapling gun, a pair of elongate 1ongitu dinally extending side carriages having longitudinally spaced sleeves slideably engaged on the rods and arranged to occur adjacent the opposite sides of the way, each side carriage rear rotatably carrying the vertically disposed casing engaging roller and the stapling gun related to each side of the way, the sleeves of the several ways having rod engaging locking means to secure the carriages in desired lateral position relative to the way and to each other.
11. A structure as set forth in claim 9 including discharge means adjacent the rear end of the frame to engage work as it is advanced from the rear end of the way and to draw the trailing end of the work from engagement with the way and the advancing means including, a vertically adjustable platform, a pair of longitudinally spaced transversely extending driven rollers carried by the platform to occur below and engage and support the lower edge of the work and an elongate vertically shiftable spring loaded roller extending transversely above one of the drive rollers to engage the top of the work and urge it into pressure driving engagement with the driven roller.
12. A'structure as set forth in claim 9 wherein said advancing means includes an idler sprocket rotatably supported by the forward end of the stringer on a horizontal axis with its upper portion between the rails and its upper edge substantially tangential with the jamb supporting surface, a drive sprocket rotatably carried by the rear end of the stringer on a horizontal axis and with its upper portion between the rails and its upper edge substantially tangential with the jamb supporting surface, an endless chain engaged about and extending between the sprockets, a plurality of circumferentially spaced cleats having rearwardly disposed casing end, stop end and jamb end engaging surfaces fixed to and carried -by the chain and adapted to overlie the jamb and easing gage work as it is advanced from the rear end of the way and to draw the trailing end of the work from engagement with the way and the advancing means including, a vertically adjustable platform, a pair of longitudinally spaced transversely extending driven rollers carried by the platform to occur below and engage and support the lower edge of the work and an elongate vertically shiftable spring loaded roller extending transversely above one of the drive rollers to engage the top-of the work and urge it into pressure driving engagement with the driven roller.
