OPERATING DEVICE FOR SWINGING GATES.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that GEORGE ZINK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Clear Spring, in the county of Vashington and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Operating Devices for Swinging Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of I this specification, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of my im' 5 proved gate-opening mechanism, showing the same applied to a gate in position for operation. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, in a different position, of the gate-post with the gate hinges and tilting mechanism. Fig. 3 is atop View of the same. Fig. 4: is a side view showing the gate tilted and ready to swing open, with broken lines showing the same in a closed position; and Fig. 5 is an elevation ofthe latch mechanism.

This invention relates to swinginggates; and it has for its object to provide a device or mechanism for opening an cl closing the same which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, ease of adjustment and operation, and general etiiciency.
\Vith these ends in view, the invention consists in theimproved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A designates the main gate-post, and B is the gate, which may be of any suitable construction. 0 is a plate, secured to the side of the post A near its lower end by means of a shank passing into or through the said post. Said plate is provided with a pair of upward-projecting studs, 1) l), at right angles to each other, and with a perforation, E, forming a bearing for the lower end of the hinge-rod F. The upper end of thelattcr passes through the inner end of a bracket, G, secured to the side of the post near its upper end, and extending outward to a position directly between the studs D D oft thelower plate, or at an angle of forty-five dev pivoted operating-rods P and Q. for the outer ends of which guide staples or bearlngs are provided at the upper ends of suitably'arranged posts R and S. When it is desired, the post R can be placed at an angle to the posts A and S, as shown in the drawings, so that the gate can be operated by a person com ing toward it from the side; orit can be placed on a line with the two posts, as shown in dotted line, and the rod 1 secured to the arm 0 instead ofN; or said rod can be made long enough to reach from one post to the other, and havea pin at its center to engage with the arm 0. The arms of the le 'cr being bent as shown, the operating rods will. in practice clear and not interfere with each other.
T designates the latch-post, which is pro vided with a beveled catch, U, adapted to engage a pin, V, secured to the end of the gate under one of the slats of the same. To the side of the said catch is pivoted a lever, \V, which, when the gate is to be opened by hand for the passage of a pedestrian, serves to lift the outer end of the gate, so as to disengage it from the catch and enable it to swing open a sufficient distance. The outcrend of the gate is also provided with a catch, X, adapted to engage a pin, Y, extending from the post S.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood. \Vhen the gate is closed, the crank at the lower end of the hingerod will be in a position at right angles to the gate. Vhen it is desired to open the gate, and one of the operating-rods is pulled to that end, the hinge-rod is given a one quarter-turn, thus throwing the crank at its lower end ontin a line same time be noticed that the upper hingepoint of the gate is located at a point between the two stop-studs of the lower hinge-plate, thus tilting the upper inner corner of the gate in the direction in which the gate is to swing,
thus causing it to turn or swing by its own weight until it reaches the post S, with the laterally-extending pin of which the gate-catch will engage, the slot L in the bracket G enabling the gate to tilt slightly, so as to enable the latch to catch. WVhen the gate is to be closed, the operation is simply reversed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a swinging gate, the combination of the gate-post, a plate near the lower end of the same, having a pair of stop-studs at right angles to each other, abracket near the upper end ofsaid post,extendingdirectly between said stopstuds, a hinge rod journaled vertically in said plate and bracket, and having at its lower end a crank provided with a pintle, and at its upper end an angular lever, to which are connected pivoted operating-rods, and the gate hinged at its lower end to the hinge-rod crank, and at its upper end to the bracket near the upper end of the gate-post, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the vertical hingerod having a crank at its lower end, and journaled at its lower end in a plate having stopstuds at right angles to each other, and at its upper end in a bracket extending directly between said studs, with the gate hinged at its lower end to the crank of the hinge-rod, and at its upper end in a slot of the said bracket, and provided with suitable latches or fastening devices at its outer end, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
3. The combination, with a swinging gate constructed and arranged to operate as herein described, of a: beveled catch secured to the post, and provided with a notch at the post, a horizontal lever pivoted to the side of said catch parallel thereto, and extending beyond both sides of the post, said catch and lever adapted to engage with a pin upon the gate, and said pin being placed below and parallel with one of the slats of the gate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
