HAT.
UlECIP-ICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,687, dated August 18,1885.
(No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W. JoIIN HARRIS, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hats, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to those hats having perforations for the purpose of ventilation; and my improvement consists in that hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure l is a perspective view of the finished hat, Fig. 2 showing a but without the band and half the crown uncovered. Fig. 3 is an under perspective view of the finished hat. Fig. 4. is a perspective view of a part ofthe corrugated strip. Fig. 5 is a perspective view ofa part ofthe sweat-band. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail section at 6 6, Fig. 2.
The body of the hat may be made of usual or any suitable material. In the crown a are perforations at a and a the former being in the top and the latter in the part of the side which is covered by the band B. O is the sweat-band, made with perforations c.
D is the corrugated strip, made with perforations (Z. The corrugated strip is interposed between the sweat-band and body A, being at lachod to both. This corrugated strip keeps the sweat-band out of contact with the bady, so that there are passages between them, through which air may ascend, escaping through the perforations, and keeping the sweat-band cool and dry to great degree, and, what is of more consequence, keeping the head cool and dry.
E is the silk covering, which is pervious to air and allows it to escape through the perforations a. p
I do not confine myself to any special ma terial for the various parts. As a suitable material for the corrugated strip D, I would mention paper-board saturated with paraffine
