FRANK ARMSTRONG, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
DIE-STOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 32,516, dated August 18, 1885.
Application tiled July 19, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK ARMSTRONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, Fairfield county, and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in DieAStocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in die-stocks of the kind described in Letters Patent N o. 291,268, granted to me on January 1, 1884. Heretofore in devices of this kind no provision has been made for changing the position of the operating-pinion relative to the cutter-head to adapt it to the different sizes of cutters used to cut different sizes of pipe.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and economic means of adjusting the position of the operating-pinion to adapt it to gear with cutterheads of dif ferent sizes which may be used to cut different sizes of pipe.
With this end my invention consists of an operating-pinion carried upon a pivoted frame having bearings for the spindle upon which the operating -pinion is carried, said frame being capable of movement toward or from the toothed periphery of the cutter-head and provided with any suitable means for retaining the frame in any desired position.
In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may know how to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe it in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an end elevation of the die-stock, and Fig. 2 is a side view.
For a description of those parts shown but not described in the present application, reference maybe had to the Letters `Patent granted to me in January, 1884, and hereinbefore referred to.
In the operation of these devices I have found it necessary to change the cutter-heads when very small or very large pipe is to be cut, and therefore there has arisen a necessity (No model.)
for providing an operating mechanism gearing with the periphery of the said cutter-head, the position of which may be readily changed to correspond with dieheads of diierent diameters. As a convenient means of effecting this result, 1 provide a swinging frame cornposed of the upright rods A and pin B,which pin passes through lugs e, secured to the frame, and forms a pivotal support for the said frame. The upper ends of the upright bars A are provided with openings which form bearings for the spindle D, upon which the operatingpinion E is secured. This shaft D is provided with a crank or pawl and ratchet and operating lever for imparting to it a rotary motion. The position of the pin is regulated by means of a pawl carried by one of the upright bars A, forming the swinging frame, which pawl is adapted to engage with the serrated face of a plate secured to the base-plate.
Although I have particularly described this mode of carrying my invention into effect, I do not wish to be understood as confining myself to the details mentioned, as they may be materially changed without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A swinging frame carrying the operating-pinion of a diecutter of the kind described, capable of adjustment to bring the gear into contact with cutter-heads of different diameters.
2. In combination with the die-cutter, the swinging frame composed of the upright bars and cross-pin, having the pawl secured there `to and adapted to engage with the serrated plate on the bed-plate, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK ARMSTRONG.
