BOOK-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,234, dated August 11, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. COLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marysville, in the county of Union and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in book-holders to be attached to desks, tables, and other articles; and it consists of a holder adapted to be turned up over the front edge of a desk when in use, and to be turned down and slid within the desk when not in use, as hereinafter described and claimed.

It is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side sectional view of a desk with my improvement attached thereto when the same is in use; Fig. 2,a similar view with the holder slid within the desk; Fig. 3, a plan view with the top of the desk removed, and Fig. 4 a front view in elevation with the ends of side supports of holder broken away.

In the drawings, A represents the top of a desk or similar article. To the under side of this top is secured a shelf composed of the bottom piece, b, and side pieces, 0 c.

D is a bracket sliding within said shelf and composed of the bottom cross strip, 6, the side strips, f, provided with tongues g, and a cross-rod, h. The bracket D is supported by the tongues g in slots z, cut in the side pieces, 0 c, of the shelf, and the bracket is slid back and forth in said slots.

L is a book-rest attached to the rod h and adapted to swing thereon. As shown, it is composed of two parts, at n. The lower part, m, consists of two arms united at the top and curved at their lower ends, so' as to embrace the front edge of the desk, and then attached to the rod h. The upper part, a, is also a single piece bent to an oval form with its two arms pivoted to the lower part, m, by means of small bolts 1) 19, one of which may be screwthreaded to receive a thumb-nut, q, whereby the upper part can be adjusted at any angle to hold the book to a greater or less distance from the reader, as desired. The ends ofpart a are turned upto form a holder for a book or other article. \Vhen not used, the holder is slid back within the desk and rests upon the shelf, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. When it is desired to use it, the upper part, m, answers as a handle by which it is pulled out from the desk when it is turned up over the front edge of the desk and held in a slanting position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4.

I do not wish to confine myself to this particular form of holder,or of sliding bracket to which it is attached, or to the shelf in which the bracket slides, as the gist of my invention consists in adapting a book-holder to a desk in such a way that although constituting a part of the desk yet it can be slid out of and within with the greatest ease and without moving or disturbing any other part of the desk or its contents.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In combination with a desk or other suitable support, a book-holder connected to a sliding attachment on the under side of said desk or support, whereby the book-holder is slid out from under the support and turned up over the same, substantially as described.

2. In combination with a desk or suitable support, the book holder provided with turned-up arms to hold the book or other article, and a support beneath said desk, to which the said book-holder is hinged, whereby the book-holder is turned up over the edge of the desk or support and adapted to rest thereon, substantially as described.

3. In combination with a desk or similar article and a book-holder, a shelf secured to the under surface of the desk-top, and within which shelf the bookholder is slid, substantially as described.

4. A desk or table, in combination with the book-holder composed-of two parts, the lower part, m, made of two arms united at their top and curved at their lower ends, so as to embrace the front edge of the support, and the upper part, a, bent down over the lower part and secured thereto, and terminating in arms turned up to form a holder, and a support be neath the top of the desk, to which said holder is pivotally seoured,subst-antially as described.

5. A desk .or other suitable support provided on its under surface with a shelf, in combination with the sliding bracket D, within lower part, in combination with the means for adjusting and holding the said upper part containing the book at the desired angle for reading, substantially as described.
