UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT KELSO, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
WOVEN-WIRE BUSTLE.
SPECIFICATION `orrning part of Letters Patent No. 323,692,y dated August 4, 1885.
Application filed Api-i128, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, ROBERT KELso, o
Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and Slate of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement ill Voven- Vire Springenstles; and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exaetdescription of the construction and operation of the same, reference being` had to the annexed drawings, making part '-of this specification,
and to the letters and figures et' reference marked thereon.
Figure I is a perspective representing a bustle having a body or web of interwoven spiral-spring coils embodying my invention. lfig. 2 is a l'ront elevation ot' same, and Fig. 3 is a broken perspective of detail part of saine.
My invention has relation to bnstles or skirtsupporters; and ithas for its object to provide a bustle of extreme flexibility and elasticity which presses out flat in sitting down, reclining, or when otherwise subjected to pressure by the wearer, and which when such pressure is relieved returns to its original or normal shape.
My invention accordingly consists of a bustle made of interwoven spiral-spring coils, supporting` and fastening tapes, and strengthening side bands, as hereinafter more particularly described and claimed. Y l
ln the drawings, A represents a bustle, the body or web of whichis made of spiral-spring coils interwoven into and connected in a manner similarto the formation. of the well-known woven-wire mattress, or is made up of interwoven spiral-spring coils, the same being made in one entire web or sections of webbing. rIhe coils may run longitudinally, transverse ly, or diagonally, or any combination of same may be employed. The upper, lower, and some of the intermediate coils,a, a?, and a3,respectively, of the web are preferably composed of a number of strands or wires to give an extra degree of stiii'ness, strength, and elasticity to said coils, -or they are stiffer than the remaining coils of the web or body a. The sides a" of web a are preferably inserted in an oblong sheetor other socket, b, and clamped therein by pressing. the sides of the sockets together to grip upon said ends or sides of the spiral coils of .web a, as plainly illustrated in Fig. 3. These sockets b are preferably covered by or inclosed in tapes or bands c, the upper ends of which are sewed to the waist band or tape d, which has a buckle, d. The tapes c or socket sides b of web a are in front connected by an adjustable tape,`e, for supporting the lower part of the bustle in position upon and causing it to project from the body of the wearer.
The upper. edge, a', of web a is connected at intervals to the waistband d by loops f, which are sewed to said band, as shown, all of said parts forming a durable and extremely elastic' bustle, which attens out when sub jected to pressure, and instantly assumes its normal shape when such pres au re are relieved.
It additional elasticity and firmness are desired for theY web a, heavy or stiffened coils a5 may be vertically Woven into the web.
I am aware that Webs or bodies for buslles have been made of rolls or coils of wire braided together; but as these coils are not spring coils, and are notinterwoven int-o ene another, a web so formed is not made in accordance with my invent-ion, and I therefore disclaim the saine.
What I claim ism 1. A bustle made of interwoven spiralspring coils, and having waistband d, loopsf, tapes c, and supporting-tape e, substantially as shown and described.
2. A bustle made of interwoven spiralspring coils having stiffened upper and lower edges, a ce2, and like cross or transverse coils a?, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in thepresence of two witnesses.
ROBERT KELso.
