Description
Feb. 22, 1966 Y. CHADE ETAL CHILD'S MUSICAL MATTRESS AND SUPPORT THEREOF Filed Oct. 4, 1963 INVENTORS VAM/L CHAD/5 GAAZ/HZA 67/160501 1 011 United States Patent 4 4 Claims. to]. s-109 The present invention relates to an article of bedding, particularly a mattress, or the like, and particularly to a childs mattress and a novel support for the same.
One of the more difiicult tasks of caring for infants is the task of inducing them to sleep. Another diflicult task is the calming of an infant upon his awakening. Each of the above tasks are generally time consuming for the infants attendant.
The present invention is directed to the provision of a mattress and its mounting on a support by means of which an infant may be quickly and easily persuaded to place and keep itself in a prone position on the mattress either before going to sleep or upon its awakening, thereby, on the one hand, reducing its resistance against sleep, and, on the other hand, placating it upon its awakening. This, then, permits the infants attendant to do other household chores.
Generally, the invention encompasses the provision of a music producing device, such as a music box or a tape recorder, or the like in a mattress, and novel support means for rockably mounting the mattress on a support.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a childs mattress of the character described in which the music producing device is retained in one place without shifting.
It is another object of the present invention to provide that the music producing means be positioned to be readily accessible to the childs attendant for easy operation thereof.
It is still another object of the invention to provide a mattress in which the music producing device does not detract from the overall appearance of the mattress and does not interfere with the overall softness thereof.
It is another object of this invention to provide novel means for rockably supporting the mattress of the character described to aid in comforting the infant.
The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the childs mattress, or the like, and the support means therefor, of the present invention will become more apparent to those skilled in the art from the embodiments thereof shown in the accompanying drawings and from the description following. However, it is to be understood that such embodiments are shown by way of illustration only, to make the principles and practice of the invention more readily comprehensible, and without any intent of limiting the invention to the specific details shown therein.
In the drawings:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a childs mattress depicting the music producing box and the control means therefor located in one particular place in the mattress;
FIGURES 2 and 3 are perspective views, each illustrating the music producing box with the controls therefor disposed at different positions in the mattress;
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view illustrating the music producing box with remote control means therefor;
FIGURE 5 is a perspective view illustrating the mattress without the music producing means being shown on a novel support with means for rockably moving the same.
Referring more specifically to the illustrative embodiments shown in the accompanying drawings, the mattress, designated as 2 in all pertinent views, comprises a generally elongated rectangular shape and for the purposes 3,235,891 Patented Feb. 22, 1966 of this invention is conventional, within which a pocket is provided for the reception of a music producing means 1. The pocket is formed with the same general dimensions as the music producing means to provide a snug fit for the same and thereby prevent the same from moving. The pocket may have a flap releasably connected to the main mattress for facilitating the entry and withdrawal of the music producing means. The releasable connection may take the form of either a Zipper or snaps. FIGURES l, 2 and 3 show that the pocket may be formed anywhere desired in the mattress for the reception of the music producing means. The control for the music producing means is illustrated by the numeral 3.
FIGURE 4 illustrates the interior of a preferred music producing means 1 which takes the form of a conventional tape recorder, and wherein the controls therefor lead to a remote on and off control means 11, it being understood, however, that any music producing means could be used.
FIGURE 5 shows a conventional main support of rectangular shape having legs 4 disposed at the corners thereof with an additional support 5 rockably mounted about a pivot 6 positioned at opposite ends of the main support. The additional support is comprised of intersecting spring members, and the same provides a support for the novel mattress with its music producing means. Mounted on the main support is a motor 8 which is drivingly connected to a source of power by leads 10 and which has a rotating shaft with a cam 7 mounted thereon which engages the support 5 for rockably mounting the same about its pivot 6 against the force of spring 9.
What we claim is:
1. A support for a cushion means, or the like, comprising a base means, a support member, said base means and said support member being of the same generalconfiguration with the support member being positioned over and in substantialalignment with said base means, means rockably mounting said support member on said base means and comprising a supporting surface having an opening disposed at opposite ends of the base means for receiving respective portions of the support member, said supporting surface and opening forming the sole support for said support member, drive means positioned on said base means on one side of the rockable mounting means and including a motor disposed beneath said support member, a shaft rotatably driven thereby, and a cam on said shaft for directly engaging a portion of said support member to rockably move the same, and resilient means connected to said base means and engaging said support member on another side of the rockable mounting means for resisting said rockable movement of said support member by urging the support member into contact with the cam.
2. The combination of claim 1 further including a cushion means mounted on said support member.
3. The combination of claim 2 further including music producing means removably positioned in said cushion means and having accessible control means therefor.
4. The combination of claim 3 further providing that the control means include means for remotely controlling the same.
