KArEs United States Patent Office 3,220,766 Patented Nov. 30, 1965 3,220,766 PORTABLE HUNTERS BLIND STAND Robert A. Kates, Rte. 1, Box 175, Bentonia, Miss. Filed Sept. 23, 1964, Ser. No. 398,531 4 Claims. (Cl. 297184) This invention relates to hunting, and more particularly to a piece of equipment used by duck and other game hunters in the form of a stand, that is more generally called a blind, in which they wait in the marsh for a flock of ducks to fiy by in order to shoot the same.
The average hunter usually uses either a makeshift stand that is far from being satisfactory, or else he builds a permanent stand at a predetermined place that he feels is the most likely place for the ducks or other game to pass. If he has erred in his selection of the location for the stand, then another one must be built at the new selected location. If the error in location of the stand has not been found out until the ducks have arrived, then quite frequently the entire hunt is a total loss and nothing is shot.
It is, therefore, the principal object of this invention to provide a portable hunters blind stand that can be assembled, and disassembled and moved from place to place in a minimum of time.
Another object of this invention is to provide a portable hunters blind stand that, when disassembled, can be made into its own transportation cart.
Another object of this invention is to provide a portable hunters blind stand that, when made into a transportation cart, can also serve for a carrier of game, particularly large game such as a deer and the like.
Another object of this invention is to provide a portable hunters blind stand in which one can comfortably sit under an umbrella that fully protects one from the elements.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a portable hunters blind stand that is in an elevated po sition, thereby affording maximum vision for the spotting of the game. A most desirable feature if the blind stand is located in high grass or its equivalent.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent in the following specification when considered in the light of the attached drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a side view of this invention assembled ready for use.
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 3 is a sectional view of this invention taken substantially along line 33 of FIGURE 1 and viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows.
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of this invention disassembled and made into its own carrier.
FIGURE 5 is a side view of FIGURE 4.
FIGURE 6 is a top view of FIGURE 4.
FIGURE 7 is a fragmentary sectional view on an enlarged scale taken on line 7-7 of FIGURE 6 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, where like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures of the drawings, the reference numeral 10 indicates a flat circular platform having four equally spaced sockets 11 secured to the underside 12 and around the periphery thereof. An angularly disposed pipe or tubular legs 13 have their upper end fitted into one of the aforesaid sockets as clearly shown in FIGURE 1 of the drawings, where it is also seen that the lower end of each leg 13 terminates in securement to a removable disk 14 having a spike 15 centrally located and extending downward from the underside thereof. One of the four legs 13 is provided with a plurality of U-shaped tubular members 16 that are secured to the same in vertically equal spaced relation to one another, in order to provide a means for one to climb into and out of this blind stand, which is indicated in its entirety by the reference character 17. The actual pattern for the just mentioned steps is shown in FIGURE 1 of the drawings.
A plurality of rods 18 is vertically and removably secured to the periphery of the aforesaid circular platform 10 through loops 38 located on underside 12 of platform 10 in order to provide a contouring support for the cloth side 19. A removable swivel seat 20, having a back-rest 21, is mounted in the center of the circular platform 10. The back of the back-rest 21 is provided with an elongated socket 22 in which is adjustably secured the lower end of the umbrella support rod 23, that is so curved in its upper portion 24 that the center of the umbrella 25 is directly over the center of the aforesaid removable seat 20, as one can see by looking at FIGURES 1 and 2 of the drawings.
This just described portable hunters blind stand is given additional stability when it is erected by having chains 26 secured to the lower end of each one of the tubular legs 13 in the manner shown in FIGURES 1 and 3.
The second object of this invention states that the portable hunters blind stand can be disassembled and made into its own transportation cart. This feature of the invention is fully illustrated in FIGURES 4, 5 and 6 of the drawings where it is seen that the flat circular platform It) acts as a wheel when stood on its edge, and that a stub axle 27 is placed through the seat supporting socket 28 as well as clear through the platform and on through the underside center socket 29 that is secured to the underside of the platform for this purpose. A fitting 30 is now placed on each end of the aforesaid stub axle 27, and one end of the tubular legs 13 is placed in an opening in the fitting and locked by a thumb screw 31. Two separating bars 32 and 33 are now placed on the aforesaid tubular legs 13 in order to firmly hold them in the desired position necessary for this invention to be converted into its own transportation cart, as Well as for a cart on which is carried any game that may be shot during the hunt. The aforesaid separating bars are locked into position by the thumb screws 34, or their equivalent. An anchor line 35 has its upper end secured at 36 to the underside of the aforesaid flat circular platform 10 while its lower end is secured to the post 37 that is driven into the ground at an angle as is illustrated in FIGURE 2 of the drawings.
The structure described is economically produced, of light weight, is readily set up and taken down, and particularly useful for the purpose for which it has been designed.
Ones attention is now directed to FIGURE 2 of the drawings where it is seen that a weight 39 is secured to the end of the cord or chain 40 that is suspended from the center of the underside of the aforesaid flat circular platform 10. When the aforesaid weight 39 is hanging directly over the intersection of the chains 26 one will know that the aforesaid platform 10 is perfectly level. Leveling can of course be done by raising or lowering the legs 13 by any desired means, one of which can be fay having the upper end of each spike screwed into the There remains to be described only the structure for securing separating bars 32 and 33 to tubular legs 13 when the parts are assembled to form a carrier. Each end of separating bars 32 and 33 has a transverse opening 42 through which tubular legs 13 extend. As stated before, said legs 13 are secured in said openings by thumb screws 34. At least one end of each separator bar 32 or 33 has a slot 41 as shown in FIGURE 7, extending to the transverse opening so that the tubular leg 13 having steps 16 can be moved sidewise into and out of said transverse opening.
The invention is defined in the appended claims and is to be considered comprehensive of all forms of structure coming within their scope.
