Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. Wilson, of Nellsborough, in the county of Tioga and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Folding Umbrella, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion. 7

My invention relates to improvements in folding umbrellas; and it consists in the peculiareonstruction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved folding umbrella, the same being opened and parts being broken and shown in section. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal elevation of the same, showing it folded. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the under side of one of the ribs. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same on the line a; r, Fig. 3.

The ribs of the umbrella are each formed of two sections, A and B, of which the former section, A, is made tubular, with a longitudinal slot, 0, in the bottom. The section B is preferably made of wire, and is adapted to slide into the section A, and is provided at'or near its upper or inner end with a downwardly projecting lug, D, which projects through the slot 0, to which lug the upper end of the corresponding brace E is pivoted, the lower end of'which is pivoted to the usual sleeve or runner, F, sliding on the stick G. The upper ends, A, of the sections A are flattened, as shown, and are pivoted to a sleeve, H, secured to the end of the stick G, which stick is not provided with the usual point, but with a knob or button, J. The fabric or covering is secured to the ribsections A and to the outer ends of the sections B. Thestick G is provided at or near its middle with a hinge, K, to permit folding the stick. The stick is also provided with sliding sleeve L, which is to be passed over the joint K, to hold the two hinged sections of the stick in line.

The operation is as follows: XVhen the umbrella is open, the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1, audit the umbrella is to be closed the sleeve F is drawn downward, and at the same time the lower ends of the braces E are pressed together, so as to swing their upper ends upward and together, thereby sliding the rib-sections B into the tubular section A, as shown in Fig. 2. The lower part of the stick G is then folded against the folded frame. The umbrella,when folded, will then have about one-half the usual length of an umbrella. If theunibrellais to be opened,the stick G is straightened and then the sleeve F is pushed upward, and thereby the upper ends of the braces E- are swung outward, and the rib-sections B are projected out of the outer or lower ends of the sections A. The lower ends of the slots 0 or other suitable devices prevent withdrawing the rib sections B entirely from the rib-sections A.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the stick G, provided with the sleeve H and the runner F, of the tubular sections A, having their inner ends flattened and provided with the longitudinal slots 0, the section B, fitting in said tubular sections, and provided with the lugs D, projecting through the slots of the tubular sections, and the braces E, substantially as herein shown and described.
