SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,413, dated July 7, 1885.

To LZZ whom, l? may concern:
Beit known that I, Lnoxrnas T. AKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort NVOrth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm Gates, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspecive view of a. gate constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a detail view, partly in section, of the mechanism for operating the gate; Fig. 3, a front elevation in detail of the pivoted keepers connected to the outer gatepost; Fig. il, a plan View of the slotted and toothed plate, and Fig. 5 a similar view of the socket-plate for supporting the inner end of the gate.
The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in farmgates, which will be hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the gate consists of the usual battens, A B, to which are connected the longitudinal slats a and intermediate barbed wires, b. The gate shown is one of many forms that may be used, and therefore I do not desire to be understood as limiting my invention to the construction shown.
The hatten B at its lower end has connected thereto a pin, c, which rests in one of aseries of sockets, d, formed on the upper surface of a supportingplate, C. The purpose of the plurality of sockets in the supporting-plate is to provide means for changing the angle of the gate or tipping it from an upright or perpendicular position either to the right orn left to regulate its swing when opening and closing the gate.
The upper end of the hatten' B has connected to it a short rod, c, which extends up through a curved slot, f, on the inner end of a plate, D, said plate bei-ng rigidly secured to the upper end of the post E. This plate D is preferably of metal, cast with the slot f and at its opposite end with teeth g, both of which are arranged on arcs of circles, as more clearly shown in Fig. d.
Suitably pivoted to the plate D is a lever, F, in the form of a dat rectangular bar, having at its inner end a longitudinal slot, 71., through which the pin or rod c entends.
On a line immediately above the toothed end of the plate D in the lever F is a slot, t', through which extends a latch, G, to engage with the teeth g. The shank 7; of the latch is suitably pivoted to the upper side oi the lever F, and at its outer extremity has connected one end of cords Zin, for operating it. The cords Z m pass down through a hole, n, in the lever F around suitable grooved pulleys, o, to decrease the friction of the cords and render them more easily operated. Thesecords may extend to suitable posts on each side ofthe gate and pass over pulleys and down within reach of the driver seated in the vehicle; or the cords may be arranged in any other desirable manner. This not being a feature of my invention/and left entirely to the builder of the gates, any further description or illustration of it in the drawings is considered unnecessary.
The post H has connected to its inner side a transverse bar, p, of sufficient length to extend on each side ofthe post beyond its vertical plane, and has pivoted to its ends keepers I. These keepers are held atan angle by their lower ends resting on the upper edge of a guide-plate, r, which is curved at its ends, as shown at s,as are also the keepers I at the lower ends thereof, as shown at t.
In opening and closing the gate one of the cords, Z m, is pulled upon, which will raise the latch G out of engagement with the teeth g, and at the same time cause the lever F to turn on its pivot and bring the pin e to the eX- tremity of the curved slot f. In this position the outer end of the gate will be elevated sufficiently to allow the bolt w on the batten A to pass over the keepers I, and the gate, being now at an angle,will swing open automatically by its own weight and be held open by the latchs engaging with the tooth at the eX.- tremity of the segment formed by the line of teeth.
`When it is desired to close the gate, the opposite cord is pulled on, which in a similar manner will release the latch from the toothed plate, and by means of the lever bring the gate to its closed position, the curves in the keepers and guide-plate, as shown, respectively, at t and s, forming a passage for the bolt w to enter and raise the pivoted keeper until it passes beyond it, When the keeper will fall to its normal4 position and securely lock the gate closed.
In place of the socket-supporting plate C, pin c, and curved slot f, through which the pin or rod e passes, as a means for suspending the gate, said gate may be connected to the post E by suitable hinges, the upper one being of such construction as to admit the gates being brought to the required angle to open automatically.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a swinging gate, the combination of a plate provided with notches upon its upper outer end and connected to the upper end of the inner gate-post, a lever pivoted to the plate and connected with the upper pintle of the gate, a latch pivoted to the lever and extending down through a slot therein to engage with the notches in the plate, and suitable cords and pulleys for operating the latch and lever, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of aslotted and notched plate connected to the upper end of the inner gate-post, a lever pivoted to said plate, a pivoted latch extending down through a slot in the lever to engage With the notches of the plate, and a pivoted gate having a pin in its batten extending up through slots in the plate and lever, as and for the purpose set forth.
