NEEDLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,450, dated June 16, 1885.

Application filed January 31, 1885. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern: I Beitknown that I, THOMAS ULARY AnAMs, l of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and i useful Improvements in Needles, of which the following is a full, clear. and exact description. The invention consists of the detailed construction of the needle, substantially as herei inafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the l claim. 1 Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is aside elevation of my new and improved needle. Fig. 2 is an elevation oi the needle, showing the side with the long groove. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the needle. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional plan 1 view taken on the line a; m of Fig. 2.

Fig. 5 is a plan view of a hand-needle; and Fig. (i is a transverse section of the same, taken on line 3 y of Fig. 5.

The needle A has the transverse slot (0 formed in it at one side of the eye I), so that the needle may be threaded through this slot taking the thread between the thumb and finger of each hand and drawing it taut and passing it through the slot a.

To facilitate the passage of the thread through the slot I round the sewing-machine needle at the slot, as shown at c a, and I also round the corners, as shown at a Fig. 1, so that the needle will not catch in the fabric being stitched. In the hand-needle the slot l a is by preference cut diagonally into the eye,

as shown clearly in Fig. 5. The eye I) is not made in line with the longitudinal axis of the needle, but to one side, so that the portion 1) will have sufticient strength after the slot or is formed to adapt the needle for all ordinary use. The sewing machine needle is grooved at one side above the eye I), as shown at 0, Figs. 2 and 3. At the point where the groove 0 enters the eye b the needle is rounded, as shown at c, and at the bottom of the eye I),

, on the opposite side of the needle, itis formed with the slight swell or enlargement 0 which i is rounded, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the thread will not be cut by the eye of the needle. The eye is rounded at c for a like pur- 1 pose. The swell 0 also serves to set the thread 1 out at the eye, so that a loop will be formed in the thread in the ordinary manner for the passage of the sewing-machine shuttle through the thread. Below the swell c the needle is slightly grooved, as shown ate and above the eye bthe needle is also-grooved,

as shown at c, to furnish space for the thread, so that it will not be broken as it is carried through the fabric by the needle.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The needle A, slotted at a, and rounded above and below the eye, as shown at c a", and recessed, as shown at c 0 above and below the eye, respectively, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
