SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,047, dated June 16, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, PETER F. OHAMBARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fayette, in the county of Fulton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Im provement in Hooks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to a hook designed to serve as a connection between the power or draft and point to which said power or draft is to be applied, said hook being designed to be connected with the point to which the power is to be applied by a rope, chain, wire rope, cable, and the like.

The object of the invention is to provide a hook to which the said rope, chain, cable, 820., may be readily and easily applied and disconnected,which will hold the same against slipping or sliding, and to so construct said hook that it will not bind, chafe, or wear the rope or chain.

A further object of the invention is to provide a hook for the purposes above mentioned, which shall be simple in its construction, strong,and durable, and may be manufactured and supplied at a slight cost.

With these ends in View theinvention consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a bottom view. Fig. 3 is a plan view, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation,of the side opposite that to which Fig. 1 is taken.

In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents my improved book, which is preferably of metal. The hookA is formed at one end with an outwardly-extending shoulder, a, which extends at right angles to the said hook, and extending rearwardly from said shoulder is an eye or loop, I), which inclines inwardly from its point of attachment or junction with the shoulder to a point ona line with the hook A, said loop or eye also extending downwardly, as shown in Fig. 1. The end of the hook A has a prong or projection, which is engaged with a bar or link, 0, and said prong or projection turned back to prevent the detachment of the bar or link, but yet allowing it loop 12.) It will thus be observed that, should h the hook A be engaged with a ring or other object, the link will be raised to allow the passage of the ring into the hook, and that as soon as the ring has passed the pivoted link or bar it will be held in place, as the bar or link cannot be moved toward the loop, but has to be raised a gainst the under side of the hook A.

To attach a rope or chain to the device, one end, at, of the same is passed through the loop b from the side y thereof, then over the shouldered portion a, and back between chain or rope and the side of the eye or loop.

It will be seen that when power is applied the tendency will be to draw the portion of the rope passing through the eye or loop against the end portion y of the same, and thus wedge and securely hold the rope or chain in place.

The hook described is adapted for any variety of usessuch as with a single-tree, slings for hay and grain elevators, boats, and in numerous other places.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The hook A, formed at its end with a shoulder extending at right angles to the hook, and an eye or loop formed with said shoulder, and projecting rearwardly and inwardly therefrom, so that its opening will be on a line with the hook, and also extending downwardly below the shoulder, as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

2. The book A, formed with a shoulder extending at right angles to said hook, and an eye or loop formed with said shoulder and projecting rearwardly therefrom, so that its opening will be on a line with the hook and extending below the shoulder, as shown, in combination with a bar or link pivoted to the hook, and operating as and for the purpose set forth.
