UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HAND-RAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,631, dated June 9. 1885.
Application filed March 28, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SnLLERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand-Rakes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce an efficient and durable hand-rake, which can be easily made and kept in repair; and the invention consists in a peculiar mode of securing the teeth to the rake-head and in the com- .bination of parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of a hand-rake embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. -''Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are enlarged views in detail of the spring-teeth and showing their connection with the rake-head.
A is the handle of the rake, made of wood, and of the usual form and size.
13 is the rake-head,into which the end of the handle A is inserted.
D D are steel wires or rods, the ends of which are secured to the rake-head B, and which are also fastened to the handle A by means of headed pins or screws d passing through loops made in the wires, as shown in Fig. 1.
G O are teeth made of wire, and with a loop or turn, 0, so as to give them greater elas- (No model.)
ticity. The upper ends of the teeth 0 are secured to the head B by being passed nearly through the same, and having riveted on the 5 end 0 a metal disk, E, which is sunk into the head B so as to be flush with the same, as in-- dicated in Fig. 3.
In the lower edge of the rake-head are notches 1) b, in which are fitted the upper part of the loops or bent portions 0. By this means the teeth are held steadily in proper position and prevented from being bent sidewise.
I am aware that rakes have been made with metal teeth, and also that spring-teeth have been used in horse hay-rakes. These I do not claim; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the rake-head B, of 50 the teeth 0, having bent portions 0, and secured at their upper ends to the rake-head by rivets E, the under side of the rake-head being provided with notches b, in which are fitted the bent portions of the teeth, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony wher'eofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM SELLERS.
