No. 372,963 (Ilairns. (Cl. 296-52) This invention relates to a roll holder. A particular object of the present invention is to provide a roll holder which facilitates dispensing of rolled material for medicinal purposes as well as sterile storage of the material.
In the past, ordinarily, rolls of sterile materials such as gauze and surgical dressings have been packaged in sterilized jars or air-tight plastic containers. When the jars or plastic containers are opened, the material is grasped by a forceps and extracted. Manipulation of the roll during unwinding of the material is difiicult and the roll is sometimes dropped or contaminated. If only part of the material is employed, the difiicut procedure of rerolling and inserting again in the container is encountered. If the roll was originally enclosed in a flexible plastic bag some other container must be employed to store the partly used roll.
My invention overcomes these difhculties and provides a holder having many advantages. In accordance with my invention, a holder having a handle, cover and bayonet or blade is employed. The bayonet is inserted in the core of the roll in frictional engagement therewith to hold the roll. Grooves in the upper end of the bayonet engage protrusions in the interior of the handle permitting rotation but not disengagement of the bayonet. The cover is threaded and provides means for airtight engagement with a container. Thus the roll can readily be rotated for easy dispensing but also enclosed in an airtight container.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I will describe in detail a particular holder embodying my invention. Further details, advantages and objects of the invention will be apparent from the following specification and appended drawings wherein:

Referring first to FIGURE 1, there is shown the holder 1d, perferably made of rigid plastic. The holder 16 comprises a handle 11, having a cavity 21 therein as shown in FIGURE 3, a cover 14 and bayonet or blade 12. FIGURE 2 shows depressions 17 in the handle which provide for non-slip grasping. A circular ridge 19 protrudes inwardly from the inner surfaces which form the cavity 21 in the handle 1].. The cover portion 14 is integral with the handle and comprises a top and threaded portion 16. Bayonet or blade 12 has edge portions 12a, shown in FIGURE 4, and a tappered point 13. A mounting portion 23 integral with blade 12 has a smaller diameter than the distance from one edge 12a to the other. In addition, a circumferential groove 18 is provided in portion 23. When mounting portion 2!) is pushed into the cavity 21 in the handle 11, the upper corners 22 of the blade 12 engage the lower surface of top 15, as shown in FIGURE 3, to limit the penetration of the mounting portion. At this point the circumferential groove 18 has penetrated sufnciently to engage the ridge 19 whereby the mounting portion is firmly attached to the handle 11 with a slight clearance between.
Because groove 18 and ridge 19 are horizontal, the mountin portion 20 and the attached blade 12 can be rotated while the handle 11 is held stationary.
in practice the point 13 of the blade 12 is inserted in the core of the roll. The edges 12a of the blade 12 engage the inner surface of the roll 23 in frictional contact. By grasping the handle 11 with one hand and the free end of the roll 23 with the other, as much material as desired can unwind from the roll. When the desired amount of material has been removed, the roll 23 and blade 12 can be inserted in an appropriate jar 24 (FIG- URE 5) and the threads 16 in the cap 14 engaged with those of the jar to produce an airtight closure.
More specifically, the present invention can be employed with advantage in dispensing sterile dressing or gauzes. Ususally the sterilized dressing is packed in a sterile jar or plastic container which is airtight. Upon opening the blade 12 of the holder 10 which is preferably sterile, is inserted in the core of the roll of dressing 23. A pair of forceps is then employed to unroll the dressing and the desired amount is cut off. By appropriate correlation between the diameter of the cap 14 and the mouth of a jar the remainder of the roll can be inserted into an airtight enclosure folowing resterilization of the components. If desired, the roll can be packaged initially engaged on the blade and enclosed in a jar or container as shown in FIGURE 5.
The present holder may be modified without departing from the scope of the invention. A variety of materials may be employed to make the container and the holder including plastic, glass, rubber, etc.
The container shape may be rectangular, square, circular, etc., and the cover may screw on, clamp on, be in the form of a stopper, etc.
I claim.
1. in combination, a container comprising a continuous side wall and a bottom integral with said side wall and having a threaded portion adjacent the upper edge of said side wall, a roll holder comprising a cover having a threaded circumferential flange portion engaged with the threaded portion of said container, a handle projecting upwardly and integral with the cover, a blade projecting downwardly from said cover inside of said container, said blade being connected to said handle and rotating independently thereof about a vertical axis through the center of the blade and a roll material on said blade positioned by the frictional contact between the edges of said blade and the inner surface of said roll.
2. A roll holder comprising a cover portion having a circumferential depending threaded flange portion; a handle projecting upwardly from and integral with said cover portion; a blade projecting downwardly from said cover, being connected to said handle, and rotating independently thereof about a vertical axis through the center of said blade; said blade adapted to receive a roll positioned thereon by frictional contact between the edges of the blade and the inner surface of the roll.
3. The holder of claim 2 wherein the threaded portion of the cover is correlated with a threaded portion on a container to form an airtight seal about said roll material.

IN COMBINATION, A CONTAINER COMPRISING A CONTINUOUS SIDE WALL AND A BOTTOM INTEGRAL WITH SAID SIDE WALL AND HAVING A THREADED PORTION ADJACENT THE UPPER EDGE OF SAID SIDE WALL, A ROLL HOLDER COMPRISING A COVER HAVING A THREADED CIRCUMFERENTIAL FLANGE PORTION ENGAGED WITH THE THREADED PORTION OF SAID CONTAINER, A HANDLE PROJECTING UPWARDLY AND INTEGRAL WITH THE COVER, A BLADE PROJECTING DOWNWARDLY FROM SAID COVER INSIDE OF SAID CONTAINER, SAID BLADE BEING CONNECTED TO SAID HANDLE AND ROTATING INDEPENDENTLY THEREOF ABOUT A VERTICAL AXIS THROUGH THE CENTER OF THE BLADE AND A ROLL MATERIAL ON SAID BLADE POSITIONED BY THE FRICTIONAL CONTACT BETWEEN THE EDGES OF SAID BLADE AND THE INNER SURFACE OF SAID ROLL.
