FOUNTAIN ATTACHMENT FOR PENS.

EPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 318,706, dated May 26, 1885.

Be it known that I, JOHN W. DREWETT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Fountain Attachment for Pens; and I do hereby declare that the following is full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement upon the detachable pen-fountains heretofore constructed with a shank to fit into an ordinary penholder and a curved portion to extend under the pen to its nib; and it consists of a single strip adapted to fit within the penholder and constituting the fountain attachment, having a spring formed integrally therewith, and an offset formed in the length of the strip, whereby the attachment is the more firmly and readily applied, adjusted, and secured in an ordinary pen-holder carrying an ordinary pen.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of a pen-holder of tubular pattern fitted with a pen in the customary manner, and having my fountain attachment applied thereto; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 a perspective view of the attachment removed from the holder.

A represents a tubular pen-holder of any approved form, and B a pen fitted therein in the customary manner.

C, Fig. 3, represents my fountain attachment adapted for use with the pen B and holder A, and it consists of a narrow fiat strip of metal shaped into a blunt point at one end, 0, doubled or bent upon itself at its opposite end, d, and bent into a fold, 6, about midway of its length, which shall serve the double purpose of a stop to arrest the inward movement of the attachment when it is inserted into the pen-holder and of a handle by which to move it in or out for adjustment. length of the pointed end 0 of the strip 0, from the offset formed by a fold, e, to its extremity, is so proportioned as that when the offset 6 is pushed in against the outer end of the holder, the extremity of the end 0 shall reach about midway, more or less, the length of the point of the pen.

In the use of this improved fountain attachment, its folded end 01 is inserted into the tubular pen-holder A, under the pen B, fitted therein, and is pushed in until arrested by the contact of the stop 6 with the end of the holder. The outer end, 0, of the attachment will thus be carried under the pen parallel therewith. Its extremity, terminating about midway the length of the point, will lie in close proximity to the under side of the pen, and longitudinal space will be left between the flat face of the strip 0 and the concave under surface of the pen, which said space extending from the pen-point rearwardly will serve as a reservoir to be filled with ink each time the pen is dipped into the inkstand, and from which a suitable supply will fiow, as required, to the nib of the pen to feed it.

I do not herein claim, broadly, a detachable pen-fountain consisting of a shank to fit into a holder, and an end piece projecting therefrom to extend under the pen held by the holder; but

I claim as myinvention- Apen attachment constructed of a thin strip of metal adapted to fit within the pen-holder underneath the nib of the pen, having a spring formed integrally with the strip by doubling its inner end upon itself, and an offset formed by a fold in the strip interposed between its spring and outer end, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
