Description

(No Model.)
- J. 'A. HEALEY.
CRIB.
No. 318,111. Patented M19. 1885 T087142 es UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES A. HEALEY, OF \VAKEFIELD, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND EDWARD S. HEALEY, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,111, dated May 19, 1885.
Application filcd January 17, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES A. HEALEY, of Wakefield, in the county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cribs, of which the following isa description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an isometrical perspective view representing my improved crib in its normal position; Fig. 2, a corresponding View representing it extended, and Fig. 3 detail views for reference.
Like letters of referen ce indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawlugs.
My invention relates to that class of small bedsteads which are designed for childrens use and known as cribs and it consists in anovel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which amore desirable and effective article of this character is produced than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation.
In the drawings, A represents the headpiece; B, the bottom, and O O the sides, these parts being supported on the posts or legs D E in ithe usual manner, and constituting the body of the crib.
The foot-piece or lower end of the crib is constructed in two sections, H H, each section being hinged at its outer edge or side to one of the posts, E, as shown at x, and provided at its inner edge or side with a supporting post or leg, J. v
Hinged at i t to the lower end of the bottom B, and adapted to be folded inwardly onto said bottom, there is an auxiliary bottom, K, and jointed or hinged to this bottom, as shown at f, there is an auxiliary foot-piece, L. A screw-eye, h, is inserted on the inner side of one of the posts J, near its top, the twin post J being also provided with a corresponding eye, 9. A hook, Z, having a hole or eye, 2, is
suspended on the eye h, the shank or body o secured in position when closed, as shown in' Fig. 1, by means of said catches and loops and by the hook Z, which is then hooked into the eye 9.
Projecting horizontally from either side of the auxiliary foot-piece L there is a rigid hook, b, said hooks being respectively adapted to engage the eyes 9 h in the posts J when said foot-piece is in the position shown in Fig. 2. A rigid hook, 10, projects horizontally from either side of the auxiliary bottom K, said hooks being respectively adapted to engage eyes a on the lower rails of the sections H of the foot-piece when said sections are opened outwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, the hooks proper of the hooks I) being arranged in parallelism with the side rails of the auxiliary footpiece L, and the hooks proper of the hooks w at right angles to the side rails of the auxiliary bottom K.
In the use of my improvement, when it is desired to lengthen or extend the crib, the catches r and hook Z are unfastened and the two sections H of the foot-piece swung outwardly, as shown in Fig. 2. The auxiliary bottom is then unfolded or turned outwardly, the hooks in entering the eyes a, and the hooks b the eyes 9 h, as the auxiliary bottom and foot-piece K L, respectively, assume horizontal and vertical positions, thereby securely locking the parts together in a manner which will be readily obvious without a more explicit description.
The legs, rails, and frame-work of the crib are preferably composed of oak, ash, walnut, or other similar material, and covered with split rattan, the spaces between the rails being filled with filagree-work composed of rattan or rattan-piths so arranged as to give the article an ornamental appearance. I do not,
however, confine myself to the use of any special materials in the construction of the crib, or to making it with open-work sides, ends, and bottom, as any suitable materials may be used, and the sides, ends, and bottom may be made solid or closed, if desired.
It will be obvious that the hooks w b,being rigid, will be respectively kept in their eyes a g h by the gravitation of the auxiliary bottom and foot-piece K L when the crib is ex-v tended, as shown in Fig. 2; also, that by pivoting or hanging the hook Z on the shank of the eye h in such a position that it may engage the eye g, the expense of a separate hanging for said hook is saved and the eyes 9 h enabled to serve in a double capacityviz., the eye h serving as a hanging for the hook Z and also as an eye for one of the hooks b, and the eye 9 serving as an eye for one of the hooks b and also for the hook Z.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is 1. In a crib substantially such as described, the combination of the following instrumentalities, to wit: a body, posts ,for supporting said body, a foot-piece hinged to and adapted to form auxiliary side pieces to said body, an auxiliary bottom hinged to said body, an auxiliary foot-piece hinged to the auxiliary bottom, and suitable hooks or catches for the foot-piece, auxiliary bottom, and auxiliary foot-piece, substantially as described.
2. In a crib substantially such as described, a foot-piece composed of the sections H, hinged to the posts E, and provided with the hook Z, loops t, and eyes 9 h a, in combination with the bottom B, provided with the catches 1', auxiliary bottom K, provided with the hooks w, and auxiliary foot-piece L, provided with the hooks b, said auxiliary bottom K being hinged to the bottom B, and said auxiliary foot-piece L hinged to said auxiliary bottom K, substantially as set forth.
8. In a crib substantially such as described, the auxiliary hinged bottom K, provided with the rigid hooks w, standing at right angles to its sides, and the auxiliary hinged foot-piece L, provided with the rigid hooks 6, arranged in parallelism with its sides, in combination with the hinged sections H, provided with eyes v adapted to engage said hooks when the crib is extended, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. Y
4. The improved crib herein described, the same consisting of the head-piece A, bottom B, provided with the catches r, side pieces, G, posts D E, hinged sections H, provided with the loops t, eyes 9 h a, hook Z, and posts J,the hinged auxiliary bottom K, provided with the hooks to, and the hinged auxiliary foot-piece L, provided with the hooks b, constructed,
-combined, and arranged to operate substantially as described.
