A'IENT FFIQE.
JOHN M. STEIVART, OF SPENCER, INDIANA.
SPRING FOR DOORS AND GATES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,877, dated May 12, 1885.
Application filed March 25, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN M. STEWART, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Spencer, in the county of Owen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Springs for Doors and Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gate having my improved closing mechanism applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side view showing the gate in an open position, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to an improved mechanism for automatically closing doors, gates, and the like; and it has for its object to provide a device of this class which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general efficiency.
WVith these ends in view the invention con sists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed my invention has been shown applied to a gate, A, of ordinary construction, which is hinged to-a post, 13. Firmly secured to the gate or door A is a plate, 0, having an upwardly-extending arm, D, to the upper end of which is pivoted a lever, E, extending downwardly through a segmentally'curved bail, F, which is firmly attached to the face of a curved arm, G, which is connected to the plate 0 and arm D by means of a bracket, H, at the upper end of the said arm G. The lower end of the lever E is connected with the gatepost by means of a chain, J, or some other flexible connection, and K is a coiled spring which is coiled around the bail F, between asleeve, S,
(No model.)
adjustable upon said bail by means of a thumbnut, T, and lever E, which latter is thereby forced in an outward direction from the gatepost.
From the foregoing description, and by reference to the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood. When the gate or door to which the device is attached is opened, the lever E is forced toward the bracket H, thereby compressing the spring K, and when the door or gate is released the said spring will expand, thereby forcing the lever E in an outward direct-ion and closing the door or gate.
I would have it understood that in the manufacture of this device I do not limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, but reserve to myself the privilege to all modifica' tions which may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a device for automatically closing doors and gates, the combination of a. plate secured to the face of such door or gate, having a vertical and a curved arm, with a lever pivoted to the upper end of said vertical arm, a chain connecting the free end of the said lever with the door or gate post, a curved bail secured by means of a bracket to the curved arm, and a spring coiled upon the said bail between the lever and an adjustable sleeve, said lever extending downwardly through said bail, all arranged and operating substantially as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN M. STEWART.
Witnesses:
J AMES G. ARCHER, JOHN R. HARROLD.
