J. H.- BROWN.
REAMER.
No. 317,715. Patented May 12. 1885.
STATES PATENT amen.
REAMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.317,715, dated May 12,1885.
Application filed March 6, 1884.. (No model.)
To CLZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnssn H. BROWN, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Iteamers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to that class of reamers in which the cutters are seated movably in the stock and a wedge or tapering pin enters longitudinally the cutter of said stock and crowds the cutters outward to project more or less at the side of the stock, and thus adjust said cutters to ream outholes or countersinks of different diameters.
My invention consists in an improved construction and combination of the component parts of the reamer, whereby the same is simplified and the cost of the manufacture thereof reduced, and also the operation of the reamer is rendered more efficient and accurate, all as hereinafter more fully described.
The invention is fully illustrated in the annexed drawings, wherein Figures I and II are longitudinal sections, respectively on lines on m and y y in Fig. 111; and Fig. III is an end view or face view of my improved reamer.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the mandrel or stock of the reamer. This stock I provide with a smooth cylindrical central channel in the end thereof, which channel terminates with a screw-threaded socket, a, at the inner end, and with a flaring enlargement at the outer end, as shown in Figs. I and II of the drawings. The extremity of the stock I provide withslots, which extend into the stock the requisite distance to contain the cutters b b, which are movably seated in the slots, but fitted sufficiently tight to be retained in the slots by frictional hold. These slots I cut diametrically across the end of the stock, which is readily accomplished by means of a milling-tool.
B designates a bolt entering the central channel of the stock, and having a plain cylindrical body corresponding to the cylindrical portion of the aforesaid channel, so as to neatly fit therein, and thus Le properly sustained and adapted for the application of either a screwdriver or wrench. By turning the bolt B in the right direction the same is caused to move a greater or less distance into the stock, and by its conical head 0 crowds the cutters b b outward, so as to project more or less at the side of the stock, according to the diameter of the hole to be reamed out.
I do not claim, broadly, the combination of the cutters seated morably in the stock and the conical bolt adjustably sustaining the cutters to cause them to project more or less at the side of the stock, as I am aware the same is not new.
The salient features of my invention are simplicity of construction, combined with strength, durability, and efficiency of the tool.
What I do claim specifically as my improvement is A bolt having a plain cylindrical body terminating with a screw-threaded inner end portion, and with a flaring conical head at the outer end, in combination with the stock having a smooth cylindrical central channel terminating with a screw-threaded socket at the inner end, aflaring enlargement at the outer end, slots extending diametrically across and through the extremity of the stock, and cutters seated in said slots, all constructed and combined substantially in themanner specified and shown. I
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name and affixed my seal, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, this 4th day of March, 1884.
