HILARIUS PATTBERG, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO LEWIS PATTBERG & BROTHERS, OF NEW YORK; N. Y.
'BOOK-EASEL.
SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,566, dated May 12, 1885.
Application filed December 22, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HILARIUS PATTBERG, a resident of Jersey City Heights, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improved Book-Easel, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view 'of my improved book-easel. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, and Fig. 3 a side elevation, of the same.
The object of this invention is to so construct an easel which is intended to support a book, photographic album, or the like that the same will not only sustain the covers, but also the leaves of the book. Ordinary easels which are adapted to support books or albums have projecting supports, on which the edges of the book or album covers will rest; but the leaves will not be supported otherwise than by their connection with the covers. Inasmuch as books of this character for which easels are employed are usually large, the matter bound between the covers is liable to sag, and by its great weight to gradually disturb the binding.
My invention consists in attaching elevated rests, preferably in form of rounded blocks or bridges, to the book-supports of the easel, which blocks or bridges are intended to enter between the covers and serve as rests for the leavesof the book or album, thereby preventing them from sagging.
In the drawings, the letter A represents the frame of the easel. This frame is of suitable outline and constructed of suitable material. 5
a a are the projections on said frame for receiving the covers of the book B to be supported, the same being forwardly-extending rods or brackets. Each of these projections has on its upper side an elevated rest, prefer- 40 ably in form of a rounded block or bridge, I), which, when the book is placed on the easel, as in Fig. 3, is straddled by the covers (1 of the book, and serves to support the leaves 6 of the same. It will be seen by special refer- 5 ence to Fig. 3 of the drawings that by this means the leaves of the book or album are directly supported and prevented from sagging, and in many cases these elevated rests b may be of such height that the covers (2 of the book 5 3 or album will not reach down to the projections a.
I desire it to be distinctly understood that the elevated rests b on the projecting arms a of such an easel constitute the sole feature of 55 my present invention.
I claim- The easel A, having the elevated rests b on its projecting arms a, substantially as herein shown and described.
HILARIUS PATTBERG.
