MOTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,542, dated May 12, 1885.
Application filed March 21, 1885. (No model.)
' To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOE E. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prescott, in the county of Nevada and State of Arkansas, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Motors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in motors; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is, a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view.
A represents a frame, which may be of any suitable construction. To this frame, at one end, is bolted a bearing-block, B, in which is journaled a hollow sleeve, 0, to whichis fixed a crank-wheel, D. A shaft, E, passes through the hollow sleeve 0, and to one end of this shaft is fixed alarge crank-wheel, F, while to its opposite end is fixed a spurred pinion,G. A wrist-pin,H,is provided forthecrank-wheelD, and on theinner end of this wrist-pin is loosely mounted a spurred wheel, I. A pitman, K, is connected to the wrist-pin H, and to the end of the pitman the wheel I is rigidly secured. The wheel I meshes with the pinion G. A crank, L, is attached to the wrist-pin, by means of which the crank-wheel D maybe revolved by hand. As the wheel D is rotated its motion is imparted through the planetwheel I to the sun-wheel G, which causes the shaft E, to which the sun wheelis fixed, to rotate with increased velocity.
In order to illustrate the practical utility of this invention, in Figs. 1 and 2 of the draw- 0 ings I show it attached to a fire-wood drag-saw.
As here shown, the device is intended to be operated by the crank, and the pitman K is hung loosely by the rock-arm M. To the wheel F is connected a pitman, N, that is hung by a 5 rock-arm, O, pivoted to the standard P, as at p. The crosscut-saw R is attached to the lower end of the arm 0.
The crank may be discarded and the machine operated by attaching the pitman K to sleeve, the sun-wheel fixed to said shaft, and
the planet-wheel meshing with the sun-wheel, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the frame, the hollow sleeve journaled thereto, the wheel fixed to said sleeve, the shaft in the hollow sleeve, the sun-wheel, and the crank-wheel fixed to the shaft, and the pitman having the planet-wheel that gears with the sun-wheel, substantially as described.
JOE E. JOHNSON.
