REFUSE CAN HOLDER AND SUPPORT THEREFOR 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 March 16, 1965 Filed Aug. 15, 1962 um um INVENTOR 7ZD.ALISSANDRATOS In Q1/3 9 R ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,173,547 REFUSE CAN HOLDER AND SUPPORT THEREFOR Tacko D. Alissandratos, Tarpon Springs, Fla., assignor to Albeni Corporation, Tarpon Springs, Fla, a corporation of Florida Filed Aug. 15, 1962, Ser. No. 217,006 3 Claims. (Cl. 21171) This invention relates to supports for containers, and more particularly to ground engaging supports for containers such as garbage cans, trash cans and the like.
An object of this invention is the provision of a supporting standard for one or more containers, such as trash cans, whereby the containers are maintained off the ground.
Another object of this invention is the provision of means whereby one or more containers, such as metal or plastic trash cans may be supported off the ground, yet be readily removable for transportation or emptying.
An additional object of this invention is the provision of a supporting standard for one or more containers having brackets adjacent its bottom to engage the bottom rims of containers, and having further means engageable by the usual hand holds on such containers.
These and other objects will become apparent from a consideration of the following specification taken with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, and together constituting a complete disclosure of my invention.
In the drawings, wherein like characters of reference represent like parts throughout the several views;
FIG. 1 is a front view of one form of my invention showing means for supporting two containers;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the standard and container supporting brackets of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is an exploded perspective fragmentary view showing the manner of assembly of the various parts of FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of an adjustable side handle engaging bracket;
FIG. 5 is a front view of a modified form of the invention, shown supporting a single container;
FIG. 6 is a perspective view of a differently constructed standard and attached brackets;
FIG. 7 is an exploded perspective view of a still further modified form of container supporting bracket; of a standard such as shown in FIG. 6;
FIG. 8 is a fragmentary front view of the standard and bracket of FIG. 7 shown as supporting a Single container; and
FIG. 9 like FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the handle engaging bracket of FIG. 6, which further may be used with any of the disclosed modifications.
Referring now to FIGS. 1 to 4, I show a ground engaging post or standard 10 which preferably is tubular and the lower end 11 of which may be placed in the ground or floor 12 and which is provided with a surface engaging plate 13. A short distance above the ground 12 I place one or more container engaging brackets 14 each of which comprises a part circular or arcuate members 15 of rectangular cross section, and each of which is adapted to partly encircle and engage the exterior of a container 16. The part circular arcuate members 15 are fastened to the post 10 by means of screws or bolts 17 engaging in openings 18 in the post. Further support 3,173,547 Patented Mar. 16, 1965 ice is given the members 15 by the bars 19, each having notche 20 engaging the members 15 and each of which is secured to the post 10 by means of a screw or bolt 21 engaging a threaded opening 22 in the post 10. Below each of the members 15, I place an upwardly turned L- shaped bracket 23 to be engaged by the lower rim of a container 16. At a suitable distance above the members 15 and the brackets 23, I place upwardly turned L-shaped brackets 24 which have threaded stems 25 adapted to selectively engage threaded openings 26 near the upper end of the post 10. The top of the post 10 may be open or may have a suitable cap 27 as shown in FIGS. 2 and 3.
In use, the standard or post 10 is placed in a suitable location in the ground or floor 12, and the brackets 23, arcuate members 15 and brackets 25 mounted thereon as explained. A container 16, such as a trash can is placed over the bracket 23, and against the member 15. The side handle or hand hold 28 of the container 16 is placed over the bracket 24, which has previously been located in the proper opening 26. The container is thus held otf the ground in a substantially vertical normal position, and where the top 29 may be out of reach of small children and animals who might otherwise knock the container over or remove the top to gain access to the contents.
In the modification of FIGS. 5, 6 and 7, the standard or post is suitably supported as described for the post 10. A short distance above the ground 112 I mount a container supporting and retaining member 115. This member 115 has an arcuate rear portion 131 adapted to embrace the post 110, and is attached by passing a bolt 117 through a suitable opening in said member and into a selected threaded opening 118. A cap 127, having a downwardly projecting plug 127 has a U-shaped bracket 124 attached thereto for receiving the side handle 128. An arcuate groove is provided in the member 115 to receive the bottom edge of the container 116, which may be plastic.
In the modification of FIGS. 7 and 8, I show a post having adjustably mounted thereon an arcuate can edge supporting member 215. The member 215 is provided with a rearwardly extending bracket 231 having a split circular clamp mounting member 232 which has suitable corrugations 233 to engage the post 210. The bracket member 215 is clamped to the post 210 by means of a bolt 234 passing through openings 235 and 236 in ears 237 and 238 respectively, which ears are tightened by means of a suitable nut and washer such as 239 and 240 respectively. The upstanding spaced arcuate side portions 241 and 242 of the can support member 215 is on arcuate extensions of the ears 237 and 238 and are joined by a web 243 which has an opening 244 to reduce its weight.
An arcuate groove 250 is thus formed in the support 215 to receive the lower edge rim of a container 216. Adjacent the larger diameter wall 215 of the groove 250, I mount a cam member 251 to guide the rim of a container into the groove 250.
It is believed that the operation of the device will be apparent from the foregoing description, which shows the invention in several of its possible forms. Further changes and modifications may be made within the skill of the art and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A support for containers comprising a post adapted to be supported iinf-the-ground and ,a bracket inounted v on the post above ground level for verticallyandlaterally supporting containers, said bracket corhprising spaced arcuate flanges of different radii connected by a bottom. to define a U-shaped groove which is 'wider at the ends 5 than between the ends. I
2. A devicetas in claim 1' further comprising'means for adjustably securing the bracket on the post. 7
3. A device as in claim 2 further comprising hook means supported on the end of the post for supporting 10 the upper end of a container. 6
