J. I. WHITE.
HAND MOTOR FOR SEWING MACHINES. Nd. 317,057. Patented May 5, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. WHITE, OF GALLATIN, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR TO 0. W. TAYLOR,
OF SAME PLACE.
HAND-MOTOR FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,057 dated May 5, 1885. Application filed February 19, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. WHITE, of Gallatin, in the county of Sumner and State of Tennessee, have invented certain Improvements in Hand-Motors for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The aim of this invention is to provide a convenient portable device which may be readily applied to sewing-machines for the purpose of operating the same by hand at high speeds. Sewing-machines as sold in the market are almost universally mounted on tables and driven by a pedal mechanism; but, owing to various causes not necessary to detail, it is impossible or inadvisable for women, by whom they are mainly used, to actuate the pedals. It is my purpose to provide a handy attachment which may be quickly applied to and removed from machines without change therein, and adapted to drive by hand-power the various machines of different patterns commonly in use.
The device consists in a frame provided with a clamp for attachment to the table, and with a band-wheel connected by-speeding-gear with a hand-pulley, from which a driving band or belt may be extended to the ordinary bandwheel of the sewing-machine.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my device. Fig.2 is a view showing the device adjusted for use.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a frame or standard the foot of which is made of suitable form to embrace the edge of the sewing stand or table, and provided with a thumb-screw, B, by which it may be secured rigidly in place. To one face 'of the standard I journal a large beveled gear-wheel, 0, provided with a hand-crank or handle, D.
In the bearings 6, formed for the purpose on the standard, I mount the horizontal shaft E, provided with the pulley or band-wheel F, and also with the small pinion G, through which it receives a rapid motion from the large wheel.
In making use of the device it is screwed fast to the front edge of the table, with the wheel F in line with the usual driving-wheel of the sewing-machine proper, after which the two wheels or pulleys are connected by a belt, T, as shown. The rotation of the crank, which may be conveniently effected by one seated in front of the machine, causes the same to be driven at a proper speed.
The present invention is restricted to those matters I and things which are hereinafter claimed; and as to all matters which may be described and shown, but which are not claimed, the right is reserved to make the same the subject of a separate application.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. As a new article of manufacture, the motor for sewing -machines, consisting of the standard provided with the clamp, the bandpulley, and the speed-gear provided with the hand-crank or handle.
2. The standard and its clamp for attachment to a table, the bevel-gear provided with an operating-handle, and the shaft provided with the bevel-pinion and band-wheel, said parts constructed and combined substantially as described and shown.
, JOHN F. WHITE.
